I installed Lion yesterday, and suddenly Quicktime can't play the video part of .avi or .wmv files (it can still play the audio). I re-installed Flip4Mac but that didn't fix it. VLC still works, but now I can't view the files in Safari b/c Quicktime is responsible for playing them there.
Any advice on what to do?

Like with Flash, Perian and Flip4Mac seem to be obligatory third party add-ons for Mac computers.
PS No DivX on my computer either...
Actually I just read on another board - that if you have DivX installed, uninstall it and keep Perian. DivX isn't up-to-date with Lion and keeps avi files from playing.
I just did it and it works perfectly.
It just got worse. iTunes 10.4.80 (64 bit) doesn't like Quicktime
I can play .mov movies from file in Finder using Quicktime. But the same movie imported previously into iTunes will no longer play, giving the error message "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes"
Thanks for this tip. I uninstalled Divx and went and installed Perian. AVI files are now playing fine. So yeah, try this!
Normaly QuickTime doesn't support AVI or DVIX out of the box,
you need to install some plugins.
but as we all have done an upgrade to lion these plugins aren't compatible with LION ANYMORE.
they'll bring an update asap I suppose.

It's called vlc player.
It's available on every platform, support airplay plugins, and every fileformat is support cause it's an open source project.
ps: it supports subtittles as you want and .MKV video's aswell.
it uses a lot less Memory then quicktime while watching a AVI movie or 720 p or above.
How do you uninstall DivX? I tried deleting all the files I could find (including in /Library/ and ~/Library/), and then reinstalled Perian, but no change (except that Quicktime no longer plays the audio portion either, meaning that I deleted SOMETHING from DivX, but maybe not everything?)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I used the uninstall tool that came with DivX. Then I had to restart. Then uninstalled Perian. Restarted. Uninstalled Flip4mac, restarted.
Reinstalled Perian, it asked to replace the existing one in system prefrence, I said yes. Restarted.
Then it worked!
Yes, I restarted tons, but that was the only way I could get it to work.
I uninstalled DivX, Flip4mac, and Perian. then restarted the computer after each one. Then I installed Perian again and now I don't get audio and when I hit play it doesn't do anything. atleast before I had audio, now I don't even have that. Any ideas?
Vater, I only uninstalled DivX. I didn't touch my Flip4Mac. I never had Perian, but installed it after DivX was uninstalled.
Mine is fine now.
Perhaps reinstalling Flip4Mac?
my problem was
no audio on some .avi in QT! some would work, not others, all would play properly in VLC
oddly the audio would work if I played the movie in the finder window?
answer - for me
went and updated the Perian system preference (its set to auto update, but it must be a very new update!)
now all works fine

What you need to do, is get rid of Quick Time, and use MplayerX instead. Download it from the Mac App Store. It's free, it's quick, it looks almost identical to Quick Time, however it plays almost every format you could possibly want.
I had similar problems. I was specially annoyed that "Preview" didn't work any longer for allmost all video files. At first I tried to fix the situation by de- and reinstalling Perian and Flip4Mac and deleting DivX but it still didn't work. Then I opend MacintoshHD/Library/QuickTime where I found some extra 3ivX-Codecs. After I deleted them everything is working fine for me. Getting rid of Quicktime and using MplayerX instead seems to be not so good a solution for me because I suppose "Preview" doesn't work without Quicktime, or does it? Thanks for the fix, Billyktp! I suppose it fixed my problems at least partly and it lead me on the right way to fix the remaining problems.
I reinstalled flip for mac, Divx and Perian and still nothing. I also updated the latest perian update but after I did that whenever I hit play on an avi file it doesnt even attempt to play. I dont even have audio anymore. anything Im doing wrong? I feel like I'm doing everything that everyone else is doing but no dice....
