How do I turn off Launchpad?

I'm about to purchase Lion, it seems there is some problems with Launchpad. Even the Macworld article I read recently argued it was probably no good for expewrienced Mac users. I already use and rely totlaly on Quicksilver and see no need for it either, is it possible to turn this off completely?

it's an "App" so you can quit it.

it's not deletable from the finder though. if you want to do that, use

rm -rf /Applications/Launchpad.app

The issue is that even once you have removed Launchpad from the Dock, when you install an app via the App Store, it opens Launchpad. I don't use MAS that often, but when I do, I get the truly awful Launchpad appear.

The last time I saw this a couple of minutes ago, I couldn't remember how to dismiss it. After a few seconds, I worked it out, as one would expect, but it prompted me to try to find a way to premanently disable it, or at least stop MAS from opening Launchpad when it installs an app.

This is how I found this discussion, and yes, I still find this iOS type feature an unnecessary aberration on OS X.

There is no MAS Preferences dialog to enable this behaviour to be turned off, so I was hoping that some terminal 'magic' might do it.

We're having a large issue with the Launchpad database re-scanning the Applications and Utilities folder at every login in our student Mac Labs. The Launchpad process runs from the Dock process, so you won't see it show up in the Activity Monitor by itself, which is a bit of an issue because I can't disbale the Dock from launching!

At login Launchpad scans the Applications & Utilites (I believe) folder to rebuild it's index. I'm not sure what triggers this, or why Launchpad needs to update itself. The Launchpad database is stored in /Users/rzm102/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/. We attempted to disable writing to the folder by making it owned by root, but that just gives this error in the system log:

Dock[4670]: LaunchPad: Critical failure. LaunchPad changes will not be saved.

Our logins have been around 3:00 before students are able to open programs. We've also tried to disable spotlight, pre-populating the Dock DB, killing the Dock process at login (it respawns), etc... We really need to find an answer to this.

Thanks.
