what is classed as 'other' on lion about this mac storage? 37GB of my 250GB hard drive is taken up by 'other'? Any help so i can clear it out would be great! thanks!

Documents, system files, .zip and .rar files, swap space - basically, anything that doesn't fall into any of the named categories.
In my view, this way of presenting hard disk usage isn't very good for a desktop. It's based on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch approach, where video.audio/phto content is primary. But a desktop user might well be using a mich greater variety fo file types.

Can I delete a file called .cleverfiles on OmniDiskSweeper? Will it affect anything? Because it appears to have a lot of things in that file that are in my iTunes?
According to Google, that's part of the DiskDrill app. If you're using it, check with the maker.

Ah, Google also says it may be part of some anti-virus apps.
Whatever it is, it's taking 170 GB. See what kind of files are inside it -- click the triangle (and subsequent ones) to see what the contents are.
It looks like it's just a whole bunch of downloads I've had over time.
Then it's probably safe to delete.
Are you running any anti-virus apps?
Any 3rd-party apps that might be archiving your downloads, DVDs, or the like?
I do not believe that I am. I'm not sure, but I am going to try deleting it thank you for your help. BTW what are the var files?
It won't delete that file actually. Any advice?
What do you mean? Do you get a prompt to "authenticate"? Or an error message? Or what?
It said it was trashing the files and then after that they did not go away.

There are several hidden folders in the hidden private system folder, listed in italic. The var folder contains various things, including most of your logs, plus system "swap" files, laptop sleepimage file, etc. Yours are not large, so there's no problem there.
Nevermind I quit the application and restarted it and the files are gone now, but I still only have 1.5 GB free.
