Upgrade to Lion Broke Superdrive

Made another test, rebooting in 32bit mode (holding keys 3 and 2 during the boot). It didn't solve anything.

PRAM, NVRAM and SMC reset either, didn't sort any effect.

Im having the same problem!! 😠

tried all three suggestions here (terminal file delete, PRAM and SMC), no dice. this is ridiculous. I'm not even trying to burn, just READ.

I have the same problem, after Lion my MacMini aluminum 2010 doesn't recognize any DVD. It says it is BLANK, only read somy DVD original (Adobe Acrobat or Movies)... It's crazy...

Again, same problem with my macbook pro. After upgrading to lion superdrive started making noises when I inserted discs, then would eject. Placinging some presser over the top of the drive help to stop this problem - but burning discs was irratic usually giving an error warning that the disc is not recognised. I rang apple care and they said they are unaware this ever happening and suggested I replace the hardware and superdrive. Judging by the number of other complaints on numerous sites it seems that this has not been a isolated issue.

The problem is ESET antivirus!!!! Unistall any version of ESET and the Superdrive work!!! Sorry for my English...

I do not have any antivirus on my mcbookpro. so, it's not my case. still I think it's a software problem, too many people are connecting the superdrive problem with Lion, it can't be a case.

I know it sounds insane, but this solutions works!

My guess is of a corrupted file in the internal settings of OS X, that gets overwritten with this trick.

I had all of your symptoms: not reading discs, can't burn, spitting disc out... awful! What I realized was that with Windows in Boot Camp the problem wasn't there, so it had to be with some Mac software issue. Now anyways it seems to be working like a charm! I already burned two different images to a DVD and a CD, with Burn and Disk Utilites.

That indicates a borked com.apple.digihub.plist.

Mine was plain bad luck and coincidence. After updating to Lion, I think I may have put a bit much strange on the old girl and the DVD drive just sadly died. The Hard Drive was just new and everything else worked fine. I replaced the DVD drive myself with one from ebay at a cheap price but for the amount of burning I have done over the years, I really can't complain that I have had to replace one part of the hardware. Lion seems more demanding on the memory and drive, but to me is well worth it for the features.

i think that the problem is not hardware but software cause i made another account standard on my macbookpro mid 2009 and under the second account i can read and write any kind of cd/dvd under my administrator account i can't.

So i think the problem is software and apple have to patch it instead of try to sell new superdrive units.

Since the issue is specific to your original user account, you can proceed in two ways. One is to log into your other account, but it needs to be an admin account, make a list of the preference files (plists) located in /username/Library/Preferences/, including any in the ByHost subfolder, log back into the original account, move everything on that other account's list from the original account's Preferences folder into a newly created folder on the Desktop, log out and back in, and see if the problem goes away. If so, you can copy the ones in the Desktop folder (one at time) back into /Preferences/, restart, and see if the problem returns. If so, you've identified the corrupt/conflicting one. Continue with all of them until isolating the bad ones. That'll save you the trouble of resetting preferences.

The second way is much more detailed and I'll not burden you with the steps unless the above doesn't fix the issue.

you need to get top quality Media, most DVD-+R or DVD+-DL are made in china and some have no database firmware in the superdrive for recording or identifying them so most cases its the media I found out the hard way that Most DVD that are made with a MKM identification they tend to work perfect to the up most. So try to find DVD dual layer or single layer plus or minus made in singapore they tend to work with all superdrive.

Of course, there are many reasons why a superdrive might have problems. One is that it derives its power from the USB port it is connected to, and so is more prone to issues than drives with internal power supplies. It can attempt to spin too fast and pull down the USB power supply. In particular my superdrive gives me problems trying to burn or read some types of DVD media, but not others, and the media is high quality and works just fine with the external HP DVD and PioneerBlueray burners that I also have.

Also, my Superdrive has to be plugged directly into a USB port of my 2010 Mini, not into one of my 2 USB hubs.

I tried all the different suggestions before simply deleting "com.apple.digihub.plist" & "com.apple.digihub.plist.lockfile". After a reboot, superdrive was back to normal. 🙂
