CoronaGuy, something is taking up your ram or PS because photoshop thinks you only have 2100mb available, total... I know what everything else is saying but PS and your 16gb MacPro should should be able to see all your free memory and allow you to adjust it's setting higher then it even allows you to on your screen shot.

I'm on CS5.5/PS 5.1 and mine tells me I have around 7461MB available in my 8gb RAM MBP 15" 5,1.

Did you try to look for an update?

something isn't right with your Photoshop... or your system config.

Give PS 1512mb. Is your system indexing in Spotlight?

witness my way lesser model showing me ALL the available memory I have to boost Photoshop's performance.

TheSmokeMonster,

Yeah I figured out that I had previously set my 64 bit version of PS CS5 to launch in 32 bit mode in order to utilize some 32 bit only plug-ins that I have. You do this by going to the .app file for PS in the /Applications folder and clicking "Get Info". You'll see a checkbox for "Open in 32 bit mode". This explains the 2100MB of RAM due to the 4 GB limit for 32 bit applications given that PS will only use whatever is left after LION takes it's share. Thanks for the help anyway.

Running in 64 bit mode my Performance tab looks like this:

@TheSmokeMonster

Ok, i created my profile while Using a PC ... profile updatetd 🙂

to be more precise : i did'nt mean the Spotlight indexing. After pushing the power button, the startup-chime sounds, i see the apple and a few seconds later that progressbar. At first i thought of an fsck running like on my gentoo-box. I did a filesystemcheck no errors were found. Thefore i decided to start up at zero.

This time i logged in an took some logs :

perhaps my poblems are related to these two messages :

I repaired the file permission with the diskutiliy, but i don't understand this log. It's complaining about a file which should be a directory ???

User uploaded file

And I get this in console. Is my disk faulty? Diskutility says no ..

com.apple.mdworker.pool.0: I/O error : encoder error

Aug 8, 2011 10:02 AM in response to TheSmokeMonster

Ok, had two problems :

1) The message from console "com.apple.mdworker.pool.0: I/O error : encoder error" is related to some data which cannot be indexd. i can reduce the number of entries by not indexing mail for example. For me it's OK and not worth spending time at the moment

2) The progressbar while booting ( booting in safe-mode ) came from the wireless keybord and is reproduceable. At evening i shut down my iMac an switch off my mouse and keyboard. To startup i put on the iMac and immediatly after I switch on keyboard and mouse. In ths case the keyboards sends some event wich leads to safe-mode.

By know i wait until i switch on the keyboard. In my opinion this is a bug, i can live this way but i hope it will be fixed.

I've been using Apple Macs & Unix for years. Like everyone I was very disappointed with Lion after upgrading from Snow Leopard & going bananas trying to find out why.

It ran slow, really really slow. 8Gigs of RAM, nothing looking slow or unusual in Activity Monitor, clean desktop, no ext drives etc etc. Driving me mad how sluggish it was. Anyhow I ran a copy of Lion Cache Cleaner which I had tried before on the caches (with no improvement). BUT.....this time I ran it to run all the Maintenance scripts section except virus checking AND told it to clean the Finder. This removes all the .dstores which custom tell the finder windows how to look and resets the Finder to default. You can always set it back again.

I don't know what it did, but the Mac is now running beautifully. I wonder if the upgrade to Lion screwed the Finder's settings from Snow Leopard.

I'm not trying to advertise LCC and there are other programs eg Cocktail that can probably do the same. However my reason for this first post is that I have never seen a working solution (that worked for me) in the forums but this one worked first time and may help you all. If not, well add it to the list of "tried it". But I am running very happy now and it is back to fun using the machine (2 year old MBP)

I'm running LCC now - in fact it's been running for about eight hours -as you said, with all scripts apart from the virus checks.

It seems to be doing something but it's a bit worrying that it is not reporting anything and the progress bar is just the ambiguous blue candy stripe spiral.

I'm going to leave it on overnight and hopefully it will be finished but I'm always a bit wary of quitting utilities when they seem unresponsive - though its Dock icon is not saying that it is not responding when clicked.

Activity Monitor is reporting a kernal_task is running with 1.0-11.0% CPU, ~80 Threads and ~935MB RAM - which, I assume is under LCC's command as there is nothing else of any significance running.

I've actually tried LCC before with little success with my small pile of Lion issues but I'm willing to give anything a go to get this crate moving at the speed it should.

Aug 9, 2011 11:40 PM in response to Alf Megson

Hi Alf

hopefully overnight should have completed. If not and LCC is still labouring, I'd be trying the following:

1. force-quit out of it assuming you can't cancel it using quit (or control-period if it gives you that option)

2. restart the machine

3. run disk utility & check disk & check permissions (ideally from a separate start up disk if you've made one but the main drive if not, to check all is well)

4. Start LCC

- first run the Clean Finder function on all volumes

- then run each Maintenance Script option in turn except virus checking (not these solely because these take a v long time). I'd start with the permissions one then work through each in turn

- assuming all well, then run disk utility & check disk & check permissions again just to make sure.

The fact its running v slow on the scripts suggests that the fault isn't being fixed by the ones LCC has finished to that point which to my mind increasingly points to the Finder being the culprit. In my case I am convinced it was the .DS Stores being corrupted or poorly carried over through the upgrade from SL. It might not be the same for yours, but worth trying.

Hope you see success with this route

I woke in the night and noted that my MacBook was a sleep so I assumed that LCC had finished but when I looked in the morning it was still running. cmd-. did not work so I just cmd-Q and then started following the rest of your advice.

I have been unaware of much of LCC's functions, whenever I have run it (or its predecessor) in the past, I have only worked from the window which opens automatically - so I was a bit disorientated by your instructions for a while.

Anyway, I think I have gone through all the steps you mentioned. By desktop is all shunted to one side so I guess it has made some difference but I haven't, as yet, noticed any significant improvement. Startup was about twice the time it had been but I'm guessing that was due to LCC's need to restart.

At the moment, Spotlight is indexing again, which may be the cause of continued slowness. I'll see how things go throughout the day and report back.

Aug 10, 2011 5:59 AM in response to RichardL152

Well, it isn't looking good, I'm afraid.

I have run everything you suggested and there does not seem to be any marked improvement. Finder is still painfully slow, upto 30s for a get info window to open.

I have used all tools at my disposal to check my HD and RAM - all checks are 100% OK.

I've decided that until the problem has been resolved, I will maintain a benchmark startup.

I have removed all startup items apart from Activity Monitor and an additional one which I have added, a link to a static web page:

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1533

I will time startup (with automatic login) from chime to the complete loading of the page.

This is far from perfect, not least because having loaded the page, Safari becomes unresponsive for about two minutes - but for the sake of consistency, this will be disregarded and the completed page load will be the time recorded.

First time: 04.38 - slightly faster than previous but removal of startup items will account for this.

Aug 10, 2011 7:05 AM in response to fatpotanga

Thanks for the suggestion.

I have attacked this from a font angle before but on a previous Lion installation - there have been quite a few.

I have Suitcase and so it was its built in font cache cleaning facility I used. Unfortunately, my bench testing was thrown by the options which Suitcase gave, i.e. it would automatically reboot and there was no way of preventing Apple's new and annoying window restore.

After I restarted, it took over eight minutes for the Safari page to load and Safari was completely unresponsive for so long that I forced it to quit.

I restarted again and it took 03.47 for the page to load - which is some decent improvement.

But Safari is still the only process in Activity monitor which is almost perpetually red, so, yet again, I reset Safari and deleted the preferences etc.

After another restart, the bench test was 04.05. Not sure what happened there.

There is no way of re-installing Safari because the version available for download on Apple's site is onle for Snow Leopard. But it isn't the only application which takes forever to start in the first ten minutes or so after a reboot, Firefox, Mail and various others are also pretty unresponsive - once the Mac has been running for, say ten minutes, they usually launch fairly quickly. Safari is an exception, though.

Lion is very slow please help!
