Bluetooth audio in OSX Lion

In Snow leopard, I would use a plantronics bluetooth headset for facetime and skype chats. Now, in Lion, I can't. I keep getting a bluetooth audio error. I live in a dead zone, so this is a pretty important thing for me.

The console shows the following errors:

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: mClientResponseTimedOut == false - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioDevice.cpp:711

7/22/11 3:21:11.000 PM kernel: REQUIRE failure: result == kIOReturnSuccess - file: /SourceCache/IOBluetoothFamily/IOBluetoothFamily-2500.4.17/Core/Family/Drivers/ IOBluetoothSCOAudioDriver/IOBluetoothSCOAudioEngine.cpp:270

I have also noticed that odd things happen to my audio as long as the device is paired, wether or not it is active. Audio is sometimes output as mono, volume controls do not work for the line out, and audio mutes (even thoguh it is shown as unmuted) at random moments. None of this can be resolved as long as the headset is paired.

Is there anything I can do to get my iMac to use the bluetooth earpiece that worked just fine in Snow Leopard?

I did download and install the latest xCode, once it is installed.

Click in the Xcode icon and open it.

In the top menu: Click on Xcode

then 'Open Developer Tools' -> 'More Developer Tools'

You will need to sign in or create an account as Xcode developer. When you sign in just type in the search field 'hardware io'.

Select and download the latest version of Hardware IO Tools for Xcode.

Once is download open the *.dmg file. In the other hand, in your application Xcode app folder do a right click and select: 'show package content'

Drag and drop all the tools from the 'hardware io' dmg file you just downloaded and place them in the 'contents->applications folder inside the Xcode app folder.

Now if you open the Xcode->Open Developers tools->Bluethoot Explorer

With Bluethoot Explorer open select from the top menu: Tools->Audio Options

I played with the options and realized that the problem was in my case with the bit rate. So I increased the number of packets that can be buffered to 50 and also the latency.

There are many bluethoot tools and graphs that you can use to troubleshoot and check where is the problem with the Xcode Hardware IO.

Let me know, with what configuration you were able to fix your problem.

Greetings.

I have had the same Bluetooth issues described above with two different earpieces since the PuddyTat upgrade. An LG HBM210 and my weapon of choice a Jawbone Icon.

I've tried SMC reset...Zapping PRAM and re-installing Limpy the Lion and still the difficulties continue.

Both earpieces display extremely flaky connectivity issues [which previously worked flawlessly in Snow Leopard] on both a 2007 iMac and a 2010 MacBook Pro which range from poor audio in/audio out quality, lost connections. When the Bluetooth device is turned off [but not deleted from Bluetooth Device Manager] I cannot send/receive an email without having this annoying pop-up.

Until I dismiss this [and keep in mind the device is not even turned on] Mail just freezes with the SPOD [Spinning Pinwheel of Doom] Given the frequency of my mail polling, it's every few minutes.

I do tech support and like to move around and being tethered via a USB headset until this gets fixed is killing me.

I can't even get Apple to agree there's something wrong with Bluetooth in Lion but but Bluetooth earpieces work fine on a 2005 iMac and 2009 MacBook Bro both of which still have Snow Leopard.

Motorola S305 here - worked fine on my MacBook with Leopard - worked initially with my new iMac on Leopard.

Lion has caused the error messages, but somehow only the past few days, and I downloaded Lion on the release date. That makes me think there is something in process that is a work around.

I did note that deleting and pairing seem to stop the problem, but only until I disconnect from Bluetooth via headset. In order to get rid of the error message I have to delete the device from the Bluetooth list of devices.

The same bluetooth audio routing problem is now occurring for my Sony Ericsson bluetooth headset. The unit pairs successfully, but when changing the audio input and output to the SE Headset the error popup occurs as shown earlier in this thread. This pairing and audio routing worked flawlessly under Leopard and Snow Leopard, however since the upgrade to Lion it fails. Have tried unpairing / repairing with no success. Apple please listen to this and fix the bluetooth problem because a rollback to Snow Leopard is starting to look probably until you stabilise Lion.

The user has to unpair the device to stop this from happening even if the audio and input are not directed to the BT Headset

I have both AppleCare & JointVenture and reported problems to each....they both seemed unaware of the BT problem. In fact AppleCare wanted to set me up with a genius bar appointment to fix the BT issue [like it was hardware related instead of an OS problem]

Since it's occuring on five different Macs, I asked them if they wanted me to bring them all in at once?

It used to be that I would connect up my JawBone Icon it would ask me if I wanted to pair as an Mono or Stereo device but now that option is not given at all.

So we wait for 10.7.1 without knowing if they're even working on an issue related to this thread.

Same problem here. I've got a MBP from early 2007 running Lion. I'm using a Motorola SD-9HD and have a lot of audio interruptions even though I'm 2 feet away from MBP. Didn't have these issues with SL. Also get an error message every now and then that says "A Bluetooth audio error occured."

Come on Apple, recognize this as an issue.
