Is it me, or are there major issues with iTunes update 10.4.0.80?

Is it me, or are there major issues with iTunes update 10.4.0.80? I cannot get it to connect to the iTunes store, nor will it back-up my iPhone. I also cannot paste album art. I see a lot of posts referring to the same issues, but no official replies from Apple. It's as if they are acting as if there is nothing wrong.

Dear elipticmite58,

I too apoligize if I offended. If this was a honest offering, then it was a great one (united we stand [against Apple]). It's just that it's a common spammer [hammer] technique for a first time poster to provide a link to paid software under the auspice of 'help'.

My comment was serious - if someone can repeat your experience with free software (like CCleaner), then your technique (as you've painstakingly described) sounds like an excellent solution.

If I had the time, and I'd not already wasted at least 10 hours getting my machine back to a stable iTunes 10.3 state, then I'd do it myself, but I don't have the time [thanks Apple! 😠]

Anyone else willing to try elipticmite58's approach?

Yes, I took the same approach but with CCleaner. This is described in the post of D528 on page 5 of this Discussion. That post starts with:

"OKAY HERE IS THE FIX.

SPOKE TO AN APPLE TECH TODAY THAT HELPED ME OUT. THIS IS A PAIN IN THE BUTT, BUT IT WORKS..."

It works fine for me on Vista with iPhone 3GS.

Note that this is already post #200 in this discussion so you can safely assume something is wrong with iTunes 10.4 when you upgrade from a previous version. Installation from scratch (after deinstallation of all Apple sw) seems to be OK for most of us (if not all?).

Many thanks Dave !!!

I had a couple of days frustration looking for THE solution of no iTunes Store and being unable to sync my new "4". Went through your process and all is working and well with the world ... at the moment .... until the next update !!

I didn't use the cleaner you suggested though, I scrubbed my system with McAfee (I had also reinstalled that earlier tonight, thinking it was causing the problems)

Again many many thanks

Hi John,

I had the luxury of being able to restore my whole system from the 24th of July (ie., back to a stable iTunes 10.3), however, I think this will work:

1. Unsintall all Apple software and reboot

2. Run CCleaner and fix all registry issues (backup the Registry of course, assuming Windows)

3. Locate a backup of your iTunes 10.3 library (you have one, right?)

4. Delete/archive your iTunes 10.4 library files

5. Install iTunes 10.3.1 from http://www.oldapps.com/itunes.php

6. Reboot

That should be all you need to do.

You're welcome

I agree, I had major issues with 10.4 as well. I did the same going back to 10.3 and problems solved.

Main issue was the grid version black background with white text one day randomely turned white on gray..and stuck. Wasn't able to make out anything on iTunes whatsoever. Album art? ha that was not happening on that version for me either.

I gave up and went to a better old version.

I had issues with my iPhone/iPod saying the usual "synced to another library"

Using the BU files that are in your "old" library never work - at least it never did for me.

Once iTunes decided my device wasn't recognized anymore trying to restore your music library with a folder from that "unrecognized" iTunes library, never gonna happen.

Same message would pop up "can't find the original file location"

I learned to just compress the latest backup file to a USB to use the next time I get that message.

Once it wipes everything out and the device has synced again ..

I look at the path of where the new back up folders will go, change the folder name accordingly and drop the folder in my new users/library/music/iTunes/BU slot etc. ..

export all the songs to iTunes and my library is filled with all my music.

This has worked each time, luckily!. Just tricking iTunes into thinking it's a brand new folder of music ready to be imported, though it's the same one it couldn't recognize all along.

juzzle - thanks for providing that link! great to have so many versions of apps at your fingertips!
