"Write IPTC Metadata to Master" no longer functioning for JPGs in Lion

I'm currently running Aperture 3.1.3 and I just upgraded to Mac OS X 10.7 Lion (with Filevault 2 enabled) yesterday and I've now got a problem that never existed before.

I've noticed that the "Write IPTC Metadata to Master" function no longer works when trying to embed IPTC metadata into any master file other than a RAW photo file. I thought maybe reparing permissions, repairing the Aperture library, rebuilding the Aperture library, reprocessing masters, regenerating previews might help ...nope.

To test this I created a brand-new Aperture library and imported a mix of .JPG and Canon .CR2 photo files.

I am able to successfully use the "Write IPTC Metadata to Master" command on my CR2s, but when I try to do the same thing to my JPGs I get the following error: "No master files were modified -- Aperture was not able to modify one or more master files because they have a format that does not permit modification."

JPG file IPTC metadata embedding worked perfectly in the past, but not now...

Anyone else notice this? Help/suggestions/advice?

(Lion 10.7.1 & Aperture 3.1.3) I have the same problem since upgrading to Lion. I have about 10,000 family photos to scan dating back to the 1850s & need to update the "Original Date". With jpeg format, this quit working under Lion. I filed a problem with Apple, but no response.

Workaround: Scan slides and prints; import files into Graphic Converter 7.3.1; select one or more files in the Browser window; Click on action button, then click on Metadata & select "set EXIF date..." & type in the date. This will set a new original date withour redoing the jpeg file. Close Graphic Converter, open Aperture & import the files.

Now I have discovered that Aperture fail to export IPTC metadata with the jpeg image!

Sorry you are having troubles too, Serpell. You say that "Aperture fails to export IPTC metadata with the jpeg image". Are you exporting the Master or a Version? I can't write the IPTC metadata to the Master, but I can edit the metadata of a Version within Aperture, and I can export the Version. When I check using 'Get Info', I can see that the exported jpeg file contains the edited metadata.

First I exported a "Master" file (Aperture stored the IPTC metadata that I added) with "include IPTC" visible, but no IPTC seen using Graphic Converter. The I exported a "Master" file I stored using OS v10.6.8 & Aperture 3.1.3 and exported it on the iMac using v10.7.1 & Aperture 3.1.3, no IPTC metadata. Aperture was nice enough to tell me that IPTC did not exported with the jpeg. I went back to my MacBook Pro running OS 10.6.8 & Aperture 3.1.3 and exported the same file from an older Library; IPTC data was present. Using Lion I was able to export a "version" of a jpeg file that contained IPTC data.

Many of my file only have "Masters" (i.e., no versions).

I'm experiencing the same problem here. I can't write IPTC data to JPEG master files. I tried to contact support about this, but they keep me spinning in circles without coming up with a solution. I was hoping the Lion 10.7.1 update would resolve this issue, but it didn't. As describing and keywording is an essential part in my workflow this is very frustrating.

Any suggestions?

Upgrade to 3.2.2

I just tried it on all three of my Lion Macs (iMac, MBP 13", MBP 17") with Aperture 3.2.2:

"Adjust Date and Time, also change master file" writes the Date Exif tag correctly to the Master file, for tiff as well as jpeg. You don't see the date in the "Get Info" in the Finder, but when you display the Exif Date in the Aperture Inspector after exporting and reimporting the master, you see that the date is correct.

The metadata was imported back to Aperture correctly, BUT capture date/time was missing in the exported .jpeg picture (get info). It seems like the date/time part is missing "outside" Aperture. This must be a bug?

BTW. Same problem with iPhoto. Sharing as web page and checked "showing metadata" produced all kinds of correct metadata, but NOT date/time

Aperture imports, stores, and handles EXIF data inside aperture correctly, but does not export all EXIF data..

Getting to see the EXIF info of the master file is not that easy, if the master files are managed. The "date" tag is part of the EXIF, not of the IPICT data. On export you can export the IPICT with a master image, but not all the EXIF. To test if the master files have the correct Date tag, I relocated the master file (not exported it) to a directory outside the Aperture Library and copied it from there, renamed the copy and reimported the copy.
