Bring back old working Spaces and Expose

Mission Control is a complete misfire and several steps backwards in design and usability. They took something that was beautifully simple and nearly flawless and turned it into a chaotic mess for no reason.

I was a heavy user of Spaces and Expose and it was easily my favorite OS X feature hands down. Now it's been three days of Lion and I just avoid Mission Control at all costs and find myself switching apps instead, something I would expect from Microsoft, not Apple.

Trying to understand how to use MC without going insane I started simply swithing apps instead of thinking about spaces, and at least that made some sense, but there was still a lot of unnecessary changing of spaces back and forth for no reason. It dawned on me to try something: I killed all Spaces and have a single desktop with every window. You know, like Windows would do. As a testament of what a terrible idea MC is, it works a lot better this way. When you do Expose you can at least understand what you're looking at, and you don't care that the tiny Space thumbnail is being covered up by your windows. There's also no unnecessary shuffling between spaces. It's an obviously cluttered, primitive, step back in sophistication and usability that almost makes me wish I had Vista's Flip 3D, but at least I am not spending half of my time jumping between spaces and hunting down lost windows.

Here's some of the issues with Mission Control:

- It's visually confusing and messy. The application windows usually cover the Spaces thumbnails along the top. What is the point of showing me the Spaces if they're covered up with windows? Isn't that defeating the very point of Mission Control? Why do I need to see my desktop background inset within *another* background in MC? Why are the Windows stacked so tightly and messily? It's impossible to pick the window you want unless you do "App Expose". What is the point of having Spaces previews if they're so tiny you can barely see what it's in them anyway? They used to be nice, clean, large previews. Now it's a stupid mess of tiny thumbnails with drop shadows, text labels, multiple backgrounds, being covered by app windows... ugh.

- The fact that they are now a linear row of spaces along the top is clearly much less user friendly than the old grid method, which was spatially and visualy easy to use and memorize. Now I have to think about numbers for desktops instead of "up" or "down". You know how much easier it is to type numbers on a keypad versus pecking the linear numbers along the top of your keyboard? Same thing. Also, you could go into the old Spaces and accurately hit the Space you want to go to because they were huge, easy to read and remember targets. Now they're tiny, hard to remember and usually hidden under something else.

- It took the advantages of both Spaces and Expose and eliminated them in order to merge them, who knows why. You used to be able to go into Spaces, and then Expose while there to reveal every window, and find *any* open window in seconds. Now it's impossible. You have to shuffle haplessly through spaces and hit expose and hope the window you're looking for shows up, and if that fails, which happens often, then you have to switch to every application and hit app expose. What a mess.

Easy solution: Just bring back the old Spaces and Expose, maybe as an option to MC. Or at least give us the option fo a grid layout and old style Expose. Please. Please. Please.

Yes, I too now hesitate to recommend Apple. But recall that things like Unix and the internet came from engineers (Bell Labs) and scientists (Cern) ... if Apple makes scientists annoyed by their foolish design decisions, they will lose this important but small segment of the market and in the long run I think it will probably ruin them. I think they will go under in 5 years from the foolish things they have done recently.

Pete! You there? I did it!

I sort of followed your advice and bought me a Windows 8 phone. I love it.

Why get frustrated over Apple going a way I don't want and seeing a lot of it back on my phone every day again?

So now I've got the best of both worlds, so to say. I'm on the last great OS: Snow Leopard (I've heard it nicknamed Apple's XP), and I've got Windows Phone 8. What else could I want? Better design? Exposé/Spaces back in OS X? My hardware never break?

Anyway, I thought I just let you know.

Thanks Rob. Very Good. Enjoy. 😁

I totally agree to everything tho OP said!

Now that my old Mac has died and I want to be able to use thunderbolt and Spaces and Expose I am pretty much stuck to only one option in hardware,as far as I know there is only one group of computers from apple with thunderbolt and native Snow Leopard support, the early 2011 MacBook Pros, which is exactly what I will buy next.Thank you very much Apple for leaving me with so many choices, really appreciated! Also very good that I can't benefit from the progresses in hardware that happened the last 2 and almost a half years!

Notification Center with Facebook and twitter integration? What da..? I do NOT want the greatest data-spies on earth to be a part of my operating system. And it should be no problem to leave one tab on your browser open for Facebook or twitter respectively if one feels the urge to post something there ASAP.

If I want to know if I got Mail I simply look at the Dock icon of the mail programm, baaam!Pretty fast if you ask me...

The iPad-style overview of all installed apps was there before if I wanted it with the Apps-Folder on the right side of that dividing line on the dock, and I didn't use that, the new thing,I don't known what's it called right now,is totally useless to me.In fact,I always tried to have my working space as clean as possible, which meant I didn't even want to have app icons in the dock permanently if that app opens automatically by executing the according file type. For example I didn't keep the acrobat reader in the dock, cause it opens when I double click a .pdf on a website in mail or the finder anyway.

All the parallel apps on Mac and iOS are nice and so on but I rarely use them,so for me this is not a great upgrade to any previous version of Mac OS X.For some it might be,so fine..

Apple!Don't forget the users who already know how to operate a computer.Don't overdo simplification on the Mac,it's NOT a tablet or a phone.Productivity has been smashed and the OS is cluttered with stuff that looks fancy and keeps you busy if you are bored, but I am not using a computer to kill my time but to get things done, which is incomparably harder now than it was before.Ah,and by the way,the people I know who switched to a Mac recently do not make good use of Mission control either.Actually there is always the same thing happening. When a new Mac User shows you his new toy,he or she presses the mission control button once, says:Look how cool that is,and presses it again... yeah great,it's there for the effect, because it looks cool.. This is so annoying,I can't really describe it.You took something away that was an essential part of a lot of people's workflow, and that worked perfectly for something maybe a few who do not know better use just because its there.

So what I would like to see happening is that a lot of the new stuff should be optional.I want to be able to deactivate Notification Center completely.I want to be able to have an advanced user option or something like that in mission control that brings me back Spaces and Expose. And

If Apple always succeeded with something it was Design, and yes, that is important. But look at apps like Game Center (which should also just be optional, useless crap!!!) or the reminders and notes and stuff. There is no consistency whatsoever, get your act together, this isn't the way!Snow Leopard was really freakin amazing, and I want that usability,a nice design and the support for new hardware combined with optional stuff that makes sense, and that is only there if and when I need it.I get the feeling that right now OS X is styled to wow you when you stand in front of a nice thin iMac in an apple store and play around with it for a few minutes.

Same here. It's either until OS X upgrades for the better or as long as the hardware holds.

While Apple keeps Pete busy with updates for his Facebook or Twitter integration I can just keep on working. In Spaces!

I run a business with Macs and also have 5 personal Macs running my day to day Graphics and Recording software. Let me know if you find me on Facebook or Twitter, I would be interested to know who uses my name. 🙂

Oh, and Spaces was removed over 2 years ago and Mountain Lion is still the most used Apple OSX on the planet, so you have me confused. Mission Control will keep advancing one would think, where Spaces went the way of the Dinosaur. But Good Luck.

That's what I mean Pete, why being busy upgrading Facebook and Twitter integration when we don't need it. And yes, Mission Control will keep advancing, that's what all of us in this thread hope anyway, advancing right in the way of good old Spaces — it wouldn't be the first time Apple would change their mind (and you'd change yours too, you wouldn't stick with Mountain Lion).

Every new Mac comes with Mountain Lion and can't run Snow Leopard, so at this stage, after two years, I'm not surprised there are a some more Mountain Lions than Snow Leopards (who cares).

I dont' agree with the rule that "if everybody goes this way, it means its the best". Jumping off a cliff because the sheep in front of you has jumped, has never been the most recommended practice.

There are different users. Mainly, there are "consumers" of "contents" and "products". Then there are the folks that create these contents and these products. Their life imply different paradigms.

I'm not one of the mass users of Apple products that can be sorted in the "consumers" category. I design software for machines that create Apple products components (and a few other gizmos).

I'm a professional doing development in the Unix world, and so for over 20 years (before that I was a VMS guy). I've been using the multiple virtual displays feature of X Window windowing system since my very first day in front of a shell prompt, whether it was HP-Vue, CDE, or OpenVMS, then "CodeTek VirtualDesktop" on the Mac, and then again Spaces. All built by people who had productivity in mind.

Then came the iPad and the right-left only dimension of scrolling paradigm. Fine. But that's killing me because that paradigm is now exclusive and no other paradigm has the right to exist. That's NOT fine.

I don't use an iPad to develop software and invent machines. I use a Mac with Spaces set with 8 Desktops organized in 2 rows of 4 columns. As my Mac is fitted with an secondary display (extended desktop), there are in fact 16 virtual Desktops. And I use ALL of them !!!

I have other Macs at home, for fun. I don't care using Mission Control with them because then I fall in the "consumers" category and 3 Desktops at most fit with my "consumer" usage of a Mac.

But when I'm at work :

- I need my 16 Desktops : 2 x 4 x 2 (extended).

- I need to arrange my Desktops in ROWS AND COLUMNS.

- I need to loop from Desktop 8 to Desktop 1 with one Control-Right keystroke

- I need Exposé to show me my 16 Desktops all at once and in a readable way (rows + columns)

The rest, I can deal with Mission Control the way it is because there are Preferences and Keyboard short-cuts that help it.

I'm not asking for more. Those 4 features that are gone now that Spaces has been killed and that gets me stuck with Snow Leopard and that 2011 Mac that is the last one that can run Snow Leopard.

Keep in mind the following : It's not because there is a vast category of "content consumers" that are "not unhappy" with Mission Control that you must neglect the very small category of "content producers".

Without the latter, it's like sitting in a big plane .... with no petrol : Nobody is going very far.

Cheers.

@ petermac87

My opinion is as valid as yours and does not deserve this sarcastic tone. Your paradigm doesn't have to be mine. Right !?

It may well be that you use one of the systems I've designed or have participated in its manufacturing ... with my aincent OSX.

If you had "really" read my post, you would have understood that I still run Snow on my production computer.

I don't care of "forthcoming updates" if they prevent me from getting my work done.

Jul 5, 2013 2:25 PM in response to Thierry de Villeneuve

You don't read very well either. The updates for SL are security updates not system updates. And I doubt I am using any of your programs unless you developed the wonderfully productive Mission Control that people have been using for the last two years. People who made an effort to adjust a little instead of complain. Refer to CT's Mission Control 101 link or Mission Control for Dummies. A fine book for some here.

Pete, you still don't understand the issues. Mission Control may be fine, but it is a poor shadow of the Expose/Spaces productivity. Perhaps you never tried that combination. Perhaps you never had 16 spaces with 50 Terminals and browser windows simultaneously. Mission Control overlaps all those windows, making it impossible to select amongst them. Expose/Spaces allows easy navagation between them. What about that is it that you are unaware of? Why are you so positive on a clearly inferior product?

Jul 5, 2013 2:48 PM in response to TomDSchneider

Do you not realize that Spaces in its old format was abandoned well over two years ago and most likely wont be coming back. Ever? Do you not understand that your claims are just that. Your own opinions? Do you realize you are posting in a Forum where others can comment on your comments freely? Do you not realize that all your moaning to date has done absolutely nothing to make Apple want to change back to an old, abandoned app? Do you not realize that you can go back to Snow Leopard if you really want and use all its outdated features to your hearts content if you don't like the upgraded OSXs?

Just my opinion, as you have yours.

Cheers
