Bring back old working Spaces and Expose

Mission Control is a complete misfire and several steps backwards in design and usability. They took something that was beautifully simple and nearly flawless and turned it into a chaotic mess for no reason.

I was a heavy user of Spaces and Expose and it was easily my favorite OS X feature hands down. Now it's been three days of Lion and I just avoid Mission Control at all costs and find myself switching apps instead, something I would expect from Microsoft, not Apple.

Trying to understand how to use MC without going insane I started simply swithing apps instead of thinking about spaces, and at least that made some sense, but there was still a lot of unnecessary changing of spaces back and forth for no reason. It dawned on me to try something: I killed all Spaces and have a single desktop with every window. You know, like Windows would do. As a testament of what a terrible idea MC is, it works a lot better this way. When you do Expose you can at least understand what you're looking at, and you don't care that the tiny Space thumbnail is being covered up by your windows. There's also no unnecessary shuffling between spaces. It's an obviously cluttered, primitive, step back in sophistication and usability that almost makes me wish I had Vista's Flip 3D, but at least I am not spending half of my time jumping between spaces and hunting down lost windows.

Here's some of the issues with Mission Control:

- It's visually confusing and messy. The application windows usually cover the Spaces thumbnails along the top. What is the point of showing me the Spaces if they're covered up with windows? Isn't that defeating the very point of Mission Control? Why do I need to see my desktop background inset within *another* background in MC? Why are the Windows stacked so tightly and messily? It's impossible to pick the window you want unless you do "App Expose". What is the point of having Spaces previews if they're so tiny you can barely see what it's in them anyway? They used to be nice, clean, large previews. Now it's a stupid mess of tiny thumbnails with drop shadows, text labels, multiple backgrounds, being covered by app windows... ugh.

- The fact that they are now a linear row of spaces along the top is clearly much less user friendly than the old grid method, which was spatially and visualy easy to use and memorize. Now I have to think about numbers for desktops instead of "up" or "down". You know how much easier it is to type numbers on a keypad versus pecking the linear numbers along the top of your keyboard? Same thing. Also, you could go into the old Spaces and accurately hit the Space you want to go to because they were huge, easy to read and remember targets. Now they're tiny, hard to remember and usually hidden under something else.

- It took the advantages of both Spaces and Expose and eliminated them in order to merge them, who knows why. You used to be able to go into Spaces, and then Expose while there to reveal every window, and find *any* open window in seconds. Now it's impossible. You have to shuffle haplessly through spaces and hit expose and hope the window you're looking for shows up, and if that fails, which happens often, then you have to switch to every application and hit app expose. What a mess.

Easy solution: Just bring back the old Spaces and Expose, maybe as an option to MC. Or at least give us the option fo a grid layout and old style Expose. Please. Please. Please.

Do so some research, accept the change and get over it. Spaces gone, Mission Control here. Live with it or go back to an old OS. They are the facts. Moan all you want, but Apple changed it so go elsewhere and moan to Apple. Good luck.

MM - Don't need somebody that is clearly challenged with regards to this issue to tell me to do some research. You have very conveniently ignored my reference to the high percentage of people that have rated Lion as poor after purchasing the download. This as you should no is not typical of Apple products.

Can I suggest that you stop wasting forum space if you have nothing better to say than get used to it or live with it.It's not really very helpful and makes you look somewhat stupid.

Mulligan, I think at this point all you are doing is trolling this thread and trying to annoy the people participating in it. You think we cant' adapt to the future and we need to "get up to speed" or whatever you're trying to say in your condescending, insulting way. We got it, thanks. Every post of yours that once more says something to that effect is just useless to the people in this thread.

I think there are very real issues that have been described in these posts and while we all know Apple doesn't exactly have a history of listening to users and changing things based on their opinion, at least we're providing feedback that might hopefully result in an improved Mission Control that partly addresses some of our issues.

Then post in the Snow Leopard forum if tat is the system you are running. You are adding Otho g but sour grapes. Most people don't have a problem. What do you expect In a trouble shooting forum? For everybody here to sing the praises of Lion. Happens every new Os. Same old same old.

Cheers

I tried to be polite in my last post. As you contribute nothing of any interest please foxtrot oscar.

Foxtrot what? Sorry, must be some old code before Snow Leopard. The simple fact that you refuse to see is that Apple left Spaces behind in Snow Leopard and have now introduced Mission Control to replace it. Like it or lump it is entirely up to you, but if you want to keep up with Apple computing, then blinding yourself to the direction all computing is going will just leave you behind. Which may be a good thing for the rest of us. Use SL and Spaces or get up to speed with Lion and future OSs.

Cheer Up, there is still Windows.

Another vote for bringing back Spaces + Exposé. I have already let Apple know my opinion and would like to encourage anybody that agrees to do the same.

Some days I feel like going to the Apple store with my Snow Leopard disc and tell them to please put it back the way it was and refund me my money for Lion. I think I haven't been so frustrated and angry at Apple ever (and it has been many years) and I guess next time I will wait a lot longer before trusting them with an update again.

Why not, but do it on a day when your not frustrated (and don't care about the refund). Apple store staff are not to blame and they can be extremely helpful when you're friendly/polite.

I went back to Snow Leopard (I did it myself) and all my anger went away - it's a great OS.

You do realize that while as consumers we don't engineer the products that we use, our concerns and criticism act as feedback for Apple engineers for subsequent updates to such things as new operating systems. Are you suggesting that it's foolish to voice a concern in a place CLEARLY created by Apple to publicize user issues? So we should just shut up and take whatever comes out next because it's "the future"? And don't get me wrong, I am a huge Apple fan, just look at my name - I own nothing but Apple computers and hate Windows machines. But being an Apple enthusiast does not mean taking whatever Apple gives you without question because to question Apple means to question the "future" therefore making one behind the times, as you imply. It's people like you that give Apple fans a bad name like "iSheep". It annoys me every time some stubborn Apple hater calls someone that but, in this case that's what you're being. And I won't be surprised to see a reply from you to this post where you call me stupid as it seems to be the most popular reason condescending people like you like to make posts - to try and label anyone with a concern an idiot for not just accepting things as they are. Isn't that truly the "blind" path as you mention it?

Oh, and let me throw in a pretentious "cheerio" to portray that I'm calm, cool, and collective after verbally attacking strangers' posts in an attempt to make up for my own feelings of inferiority.

Mulligans Missus how did you become such a dedicated evangelist for Mission Control, it's just an application—and it doesn't even help one's workflow. As easy as Apple introduced Spaces in Leopard or Mission Control in Lion, they may change to something different in the next OS. Don't get attached to Mission Control too much, or you'll get trouble to get over it and you'll miss the future. The way you show you take hold of your belief you even may become a whining person.

Ive posted in here a while back and everytime I read the updates on this thread it seems to be always someone elses thoughts and opinion vs another about SE vs MC and which should be used.

From the title of this thread, I guess its safe to say that this tread is more focused on the point about bring the old Expose and Spaces back into Lion rather than complaining about either SE or MC and which should exist over the other.

I personally would like to see the old SE back, but that does not mean we would need to get rid of MC all together. Simply Apple should have given its users the choice of which one they would like to use... SE or MC. As we and Apple are currently at the tipping point or peak where hybrid touch screen laptop/tablets may start to exist and become popular. Hence the creation of OSX Lion, Launch Pad, the way how MC looks and works ( Very Liniar compared to SE. ) and lastly how everything has become more grided or pre-aligned ( like Windows 7 and 8 ).

I hope in future Apple would consider adding an extra setting in where it lets the user choose between a Hybrid OS or a full laptop/desktop OS.

Spaces and Expose are simply not a feature of Lion. Carry on all you want. Apple made a decision to move on and either live with it, move backwards or tell Apple. Don't blame me for pointing out that MC is a feature of Lion which has sold them well over six million downloads. Give it a rest and save your breath for the next update when it still does t return.

MM - Just what is your problem? You sound amazingly stupid and you are giving women and genuine Apple fans a bad name. I am not interested in debating your idiotic and condescending points because that would be a waste of time. Can't you get the message that there are a lot of people on this thread that think your contribution is totally meaningless. You're sufficiently audacious to complain that a poster is mocking you for no reason.THE REASON IS VERY SIMPLE.YOU GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU ARE AN IDIOT.

WUM's like you do not belong on an Apple forum.I have been an Apple fan for nearly twenty years and I don't think I have ever experienced such a patronising poster as yourself. If you're one of the new breed then you are doing Apple no favours whatsoever. We all enjoy change. That is why we are Apple fans! That does not mean we are so stupid that we cannot challenge change or suggest improvements. That is how products improve. Why do you think Apple introduce system upgrades? They don't always get it right first time everytime! LIVE WITH IT!

Rant over.Please go away.

Hmmmm seems you did. No, Spaces won't be coming back. You are the ranters, the sooks, the whingers and the ones who just don't get it. You really do believe that Apple monitor everything in this forum. You really have no idea do you. Spaces & Expose = Gone. Simple. A child would understand, but not you small few. Thanks for thanking me for keeping this post alive. Happy to oblige.

Thank You for the compliments.
