Bring back old working Spaces and Expose

Mission Control is a complete misfire and several steps backwards in design and usability. They took something that was beautifully simple and nearly flawless and turned it into a chaotic mess for no reason.

I was a heavy user of Spaces and Expose and it was easily my favorite OS X feature hands down. Now it's been three days of Lion and I just avoid Mission Control at all costs and find myself switching apps instead, something I would expect from Microsoft, not Apple.

Trying to understand how to use MC without going insane I started simply swithing apps instead of thinking about spaces, and at least that made some sense, but there was still a lot of unnecessary changing of spaces back and forth for no reason. It dawned on me to try something: I killed all Spaces and have a single desktop with every window. You know, like Windows would do. As a testament of what a terrible idea MC is, it works a lot better this way. When you do Expose you can at least understand what you're looking at, and you don't care that the tiny Space thumbnail is being covered up by your windows. There's also no unnecessary shuffling between spaces. It's an obviously cluttered, primitive, step back in sophistication and usability that almost makes me wish I had Vista's Flip 3D, but at least I am not spending half of my time jumping between spaces and hunting down lost windows.

Here's some of the issues with Mission Control:

- It's visually confusing and messy. The application windows usually cover the Spaces thumbnails along the top. What is the point of showing me the Spaces if they're covered up with windows? Isn't that defeating the very point of Mission Control? Why do I need to see my desktop background inset within *another* background in MC? Why are the Windows stacked so tightly and messily? It's impossible to pick the window you want unless you do "App Expose". What is the point of having Spaces previews if they're so tiny you can barely see what it's in them anyway? They used to be nice, clean, large previews. Now it's a stupid mess of tiny thumbnails with drop shadows, text labels, multiple backgrounds, being covered by app windows... ugh.

- The fact that they are now a linear row of spaces along the top is clearly much less user friendly than the old grid method, which was spatially and visualy easy to use and memorize. Now I have to think about numbers for desktops instead of "up" or "down". You know how much easier it is to type numbers on a keypad versus pecking the linear numbers along the top of your keyboard? Same thing. Also, you could go into the old Spaces and accurately hit the Space you want to go to because they were huge, easy to read and remember targets. Now they're tiny, hard to remember and usually hidden under something else.

- It took the advantages of both Spaces and Expose and eliminated them in order to merge them, who knows why. You used to be able to go into Spaces, and then Expose while there to reveal every window, and find *any* open window in seconds. Now it's impossible. You have to shuffle haplessly through spaces and hit expose and hope the window you're looking for shows up, and if that fails, which happens often, then you have to switch to every application and hit app expose. What a mess.

Easy solution: Just bring back the old Spaces and Expose, maybe as an option to MC. Or at least give us the option fo a grid layout and old style Expose. Please. Please. Please.

To posters that want the return of Spaces badly, I'd say if there's nothing that ties you to Lion, forget that cat, get over it, return to Snow Leopard and enjoy good old Spaces like you did before. And wait to see if the future is any better after Lion.

Apple released Airport Utility 6.0 for Lion, it has less options than earlier versions and sports an iOS like interface. Among the commenters on Mac Rumors there even is one asking to get multitasking back.

Perhaps, if you haven't changed your workhorse for a tablet by the end of 2012, there will be a solution for you too—whether it comes from Apple or not.

I can wait.

Well that should put the pressure on Apple.

Cheers

I think that expresses the absurdity of iOS like applications on computers that aren't phones or tablets. I do not think that any user comment could put any pressure on Apple.

Apple quite clearly are happy to sacrific power-users for the mass market of consumable devices; hence MC is all preparation for touch-screens in their notebook and desktop range. It's the obvious consolidation. Given the respective market sizes and likely profits it makes good business sense.

From a UI perspective, for a power-user Expose and Spaces is awesome, but not necessary for a casual media device. Apple have always been for stripping away clutter.

For me, i miss the power of SL, so i will have to re-revaluate when i come to replace my mbp.

MM - thank you for pointing out that it's my choice. Gee i would have not realised otherwise!

"Disagree"? - What is there to agree or disagree about?

It's about functionality useful to the individual.

Your comment is about as relevant as arguing the merits of a fork-lift truck. Great if i worked in warehouse, not so useful working in the City.

Best regards

Wow, you don't read many threads do you.

Yes, yes. I completely agree with whatever that comparison is meant to be relevant to. ???? lol😉

Cheerio

I wouldn't blame it on Apple store employees, nor I care much for a refund, but I would like to make the point to Apple that you can't just take customers for granted. Probably it wouldn't work unlees a lot of did it too.

I don't want Apple to design by committee, but they should realize that if they sell us something as being a great tool for workflow (and it was) they shouldn't come and cripple it in the next iteration and expect everybody to be happy about it. Most of the people that seem to like MC didn't even use S+E before. IMHO Apple should have introduced MC as an alternative (or default, I don't care as long as I have an option. I am not one of those petty characters I see posting here that just don't want other people to have what they need) and let people figure which one they prefer. Almost like the simple desktop thingy back in OS 7 or 8.

For me, from being a useful tool has become a daily pain in the neck.

I could go back to Snow Leopard (and probably will as soon as I have some time) but it ***** to have to do all that work after paying for a new version. Is not the money, is having to pay to be aggravated.

I agree with everything you say and hope you get the time to upgrade to Snow Leopard soon. I avoided the frustration of feeling totally robbed by leave a copy of Lion on my multimedia Mac.

My greatest concern is how long I need to wait until I can upgrade my hardware, which is the only reason I want to see this issue resolved in the longer term.

It will be interesting to see if Apple wakes up to the fact that users of more sophisticated features might also influence a broader pool of general users. I know my decision to move back to SL has stopped a lot of people I know downgrading to Lion.

I recently got a new Mac at work that came with Lion. After a couple of weeks of trying really hard to make Mission Control work for me, I finally gave up. There was just no way for me to recapture the efficiency and ease of use I had with Spaces and Expose.

It took some arm-twisting, but I convinced a member of our IT department to uninstall Lion from my machine and install Snow Leopard, the OS I had been using on my previous Mac. Maybe I'm missing out on some cool new features in Lion, but I was unwilling to take the Giant Leap Backward that is Mission Control. (Houston, we have a problem.)

I plan to submit official feedback to Apple when I can find time. Hopefully lots of people will.

I have the same problem. My MacBook is getting rather old and would like to upgrade this year maybe to a MacBook Air (Anyway, I digress). The problem is will this issue be resolved by then? Should I give it another try in the new hardware? which seems pointless or would it be possible to buy the new laptop with Snow Leopard preloaded. It would be interesting to see what would Apple do if a lot of people (or at least a noticeble amount) started asking for new hardware with Snow Leopard preloaded. 😝

One of the problems with Exposé/Spaces adoption is that matching the various features of Exposé/Spaces to a user's preferred workflow takes time. It's not surprising that many users never find the combination of features that would work for them.

DanAtWork - If there are other people in the office who are still using Snow Leopard why not help them try an approach to Exposé (and/or maybe Spaces) that would work for them.

Realisation of the value of Exposé to me was instant (eg. four finger swipe down to find out which windows, regardless of application, I have minimised). However, finding value in Spaces for my workflow took a while. It wasn't until I limited my self to two and assigned "option-." and "option-/" to the left and right space that I found the navigation worth using for me. I found that option-LeftArrow and option-RightArrow problematic, however I would be interested in knowing how others have setup their exposé and/or spaces? Given that their is no one way to use these features, and users have different workflows/needs, it would be worth knowing about some of the configurations that people have found useful so that I'm not just suggesting my approach to all users.

Please explain how in anyway is Mission Control better than Expose and Spaces. I have had Lion almost from when it was launched on my iMac and I will never grow to love Mission Control.I also run a Macbook on Snow Leopard and I just caanot find one single benefit of Mission Control.

Because that is just how ypo like your workflow. others have different workflows. I always hated spaces. expose ok, but now for me Mission control a perfect blend. you hate it many many love it. never twain shall meet. don't sdpeak for all of us, just is your preference. mine is by far mission control. Spaces gone for ever now so get use to it or go way backwards to old snow leopard.

good luck
