Memory Slot Utility Dialog On Every Boot?

Hi all,

So yesterday i upgraded my 2009 Mac Pro from 3GB of RAM (3x 1GB DIMMs) to 12GB (3x 4GB DIMMs), and everytime the computer boots I get a dialog from Memory Slot Utility saying "the memory modules are installed in the recommended slots".

Thus far i've tried:

* Resetting PRAM and NVRAM

* Shifting the DIMMs around in different slots to see if any were faulty but all appears well.

* Checking launchd and friends to ensure there are no wacky launch or login items

* Trawling the console for boot errors or messages; seems to be nothing that stands out.

I'm running as the administrator and the only user on this machine.

This is really bugging me and there appear to be no threads online that really say what the cause of this is. Any help greatly recived.

Cheers, Tim

In addition to creating a root user account, there are also suggestions as to moving the Memory Slot Utility, or archiving it, to prevent the repeated dialog box on start. Although the problem presented itself differently that the one discussed in this thread, its source and the solution are the same. See http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57483101-263/persistent-boot-messages-retur n-for-mac-pro-users-in-mountain-lion/

My preference is to create the root user account and handle it that way, but the link does offer an alternative.

In OS X 10.8.2, deleting the following file resolved the issue on four of my systems:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.PCIE.plist

Keep in mind that this is the /Library/Preferences folder at the root level of your hard drive, not the one in your user folder. This solution may work for other versions of OS X as well.

Other thoughts:

-If the above fix doesn't work for you, and you need to enable the root user, remember to go back and disable the root user when you're done.

-Moving the Memory Slot Utility or otherwise disabling it may prevent you from seeing future legitimate warnings about incorrectly or non-optimal memory installations.
