Everybody settle down about Lion!

So far Lion has been out for 4 days, sure there are going to be bugs its the first version of a new operating system!, of course everything isnt going to be perfect. Apple is already seeding (or about to seed) 10.7.2 for developers and this should fix some bugs and problems.

People need to settle down about simple little bugs, i have two macs that i upgraded a couple of days ago and so far havent had any bugs whatsoever, and even if i come across some i certinetly wont retreat back to Snow Leopard.

Longtime Mac user here that's why I got a Mac Plus for an icon

Things are generally fine here but on one computer I can't get iTunes to sync. For many that would be major. I'm more inclined to keeep tryin to find a solution when it's not too distracting. I'm slightly bemused by the things that need to be hacked a bit

The last three system upgrades whent fairly well for me, so I guess I'm due a few "UNDOCUMENTED FEATURES" =8^}

thanx rodekynt!

Kudos to your sensible and reasoned critique of Lion. I became a Mac user in March 2009, when I said good-bye to Microsoft and the PC. Therefore, you have shed some light from your experience. I agree with your opinion about not wanting the OS X to imitate the IOS. With the screen real estate available on the MAC, there is no reason to adopt the IOS format. Thanks for your article.

Most people I know that went back to Snow Leopard sighted the inability to “Bounce” an e-mail using the Lion version of Apple Mail (Mail 5).

Some have successfully installed the mail from Snow Leopard (Mail 4) into Lion In order to get the “Bounce” function back.

Will 10.7.2 fix this?

I hope that when 10.8 comes out you don't install it on first release. You use you computer for critical business, the last thing you should ever do is update to the newest unused OS (or critical software for that matter) in the first couple days.

You need to allow the developer to set it out to users and get feedback on any issues that it might be having, there is no way to test for every possible setup on a users computer. Developers try to cover it as best they can, but if it was expected that initial release of any software were to be error free, software would never get released.

I hope you can find ways to fix your issues ASAP. It is just dangerous to mess with the heart of your computer when it is critical that it runs smoothly.

The problem with Lion I think is slightly different, and as someone said, even if we are no here to say who's guilty and who's not, I understand why some users are angry, and feel that Apple fooled them.

When you switch from XP to Vista and to Windows 7, you know that you are doing a major upgrade, you know that a simple upgrade is not recommended but you'd rather do a clean install, and you know that it will radically change your habits. Windows does warn everywhere to make a complete backup before doing anything.

Now I'm not saying Windows is better, not at all. But with Lion, Apple made people think that you simply have to upgrade from the app store, with no warning regarding backup, and never ever mentioned that features would be removed, or that some programs would be incompatible. The user is supposed to know ? No, there are different types of users, not everyone is a geek. Finally, even me, a Windows power user, therefore used to backup everything before a major upgrade, really was defenseless, as I saw Lion as a simple upgrade, and I still see it this way, as the OS barely changed in my opinion.

Just take Autosave and Versions. Yes Apple mentioned it, but did they mention it would completely remove the simple "save as" feature ? No, they did not mention it. Many professionals can't even use there Numbers files anymore, too scared that Lion will modify them without notice.

So yes, Lion is at its first version, and no software is bug-free. But Apple has to keep in mind that you do not advertise for an OS as you advertise for a simple app. Before installing Lion, a huge Warning screen should tell the user about softwares and features that might cause problems. But it seems like Apple has issues when it comes to admit that everything is not that easy in the Apple world.

A satisfied Mac user, a satisfied Windows user, and very unsatisfied Version user.

I must be missing the part of versioning that is getting folks angry. If you don't want to use it, you don't. and if you want to "save as" a file, you say duplicate then save. I think that's two clicks vs. one. The hidden SQL database is not very big, and unless ur using a small SSD, what's to worry about? Anyway, my plan...ignore it until it gets better.

However, and this may be a chronosync bug:

User uploaded file

Chronosynced files will automatically lock when synced (for some inexplicable reason) where files that are dragged from one machine to another are not. That IS annoying. 😉

Agreed, even some of the media reviews found online make specific reference to how Apple tries to take some of the apprehension out of changing OS's with its online distribution model. Hey, it's just like upgrading an app, right?

Thankfully, it's only a $30 plus a couple hours mistake for me. I haven't gone back to SL, yet, as I had only started to see if I was the only one having issues. I'm not an old hand with Apple...this '08 unibody mb is my first. For me, it seems a bit like they may be a victim of their own success. Apple has set the bar so high with everything else for me that this has been a big letdown. I really, really wish I would've waited for a couple updates as someone else has suggested. I'm hopeful that it will improve.

My biggest problem is an overall system slowdown. I'm maxed out at 6gb memory, and while I don't claim to be an efficient user (always have 10+ tabs open, photoshop, fireworks, sometimes parallels) Lion really bogs down under conditions that didn't with SL. What's strange is that according to iStat, my free memory is still over 1.5gb. And while I've been able to restore the 3-finger back/forward swipe, there's no option to restore the 4-finger up/down swipe actions that were in SL. I think with enough time, I could retrain myself with that, but it's still a PITA.

Probably going to take the time to revert to a TM backup tomorrow evening 😟

Ah, Numbers.

I know not all people are geeks like me, but come on... it took me 1 minute to find out how to "Save As".

You go to "Save" and expand to a full save screen by pressing the down arrow (which really, people should be used to doing, the bare save screen is so basic!)... and there it is "Save a Copy as..." Excel etc.

I didn't need any search on the internet or hard thinking... simply looked at the screen in front of me.

If you need versioning, you can simply choose to duplicate. That gives you the other use of "Save As...".

Or do you mean that you can't rename the file using Save As...? Rename in Finder, that's what it's there for.

As to the fear of losing things, there's a thing called LOCK in all the iWork apps. And that one has been covered by Apple in detail. As well as the duplicate feature. And how to access all the intermediary steps to undo changes.

Yes, it's a new way of doing things, but complaints about how "I can't do X" are ridiculous when the truth is you can do X, just slightly different way.

Learning new ways of doing things is really not worth all this panic people are showing. (this isn't saying anything about people for whom Lion is simply not running)

I must say, a lot of people did not do any research or reading or preparation before going into this.

A lot of the issues and complaints I've read come down to that fact. And the rest are mostly divided between Lion simply not running or crushing their Mac... and people upset about not being able to do things the same way as before.

The chill pill recommended by the OP might do some people some good.

I don't think people are having a problem with the initial saving, it's what happens afterwards that has many knickers in a twister:

This:

User uploaded file

Vs. this:

User uploaded file

Which of course, in the case of Excel, is the same no matter what state the doc is in.

Now, it only took me a few minutes to figure out what was up, but that was after reading about Versioning on the Apple site before the install and heck, I've got 40 years in this biz.

But if had been my wife, who is a hardcore windows person out of necesssity (she is the one who leaves the house to make money vs. me, who just waits by the PayPal account at home) - she would have freaked!

In fact, I can imagine it now: first it would have been a frantic call (more like scream) to the IT department, and then to me at home in my underwear: WHERE IS THE SAVE AS!?! with a long list of expletives before and after that I won't list here.

Then, after 5pm, I would hear about it all night long until Master Chef came on: " Why did they remove it, I've been doing this for 25 years and have never seen such crap" Again, I leave the expletives to your imagination.

This is why I've told my wife that her Macbook at home does nothing more then open Cityville, and the rest is best left alone. And a happy home it is.

Cheers,

coocoo
