Everybody settle down about Lion!

So far Lion has been out for 4 days, sure there are going to be bugs its the first version of a new operating system!, of course everything isnt going to be perfect. Apple is already seeding (or about to seed) 10.7.2 for developers and this should fix some bugs and problems.

People need to settle down about simple little bugs, i have two macs that i upgraded a couple of days ago and so far havent had any bugs whatsoever, and even if i come across some i certinetly wont retreat back to Snow Leopard.

I think the idea that your computer is, or should be, an appliance is naive and still fairly far off in the future (if it's even possible at all, given the complexity). Ironically, Lion was developed to make that future a reality. I still can't understand how the computer saving your document for you, for example, is a bad thing.

Here is just one of many very good professional write-ups on installing the new operating system, that are available with a simple Google search. Nobody should be on this forum asking such basic questions, let alone complaining that things have gone wrong, that with a little preparation, they could have avoided. That includes making a copy of the installer on your clone backup, so you can use it on each computer in your house and even wipe everything and start again if necessary.

I agree with you Subhut. Thus far I've installed Lion on three of the four machines in my house. Two of three MacBook Pros and it worked absolutely the way it should.

I did encounter a problem when trying to install it on my Mac Pro however. But the problem had nothing to do with Lion, or Apple for that matter. In fact the problem may even be the root of Fancisco's issue -- a hard drive that was going bad, or nearing failure. I've had the issue with two WD hard drives going bad in the Mac Pro so I was able to recognize the symptoms. In this case, I didn't even get to the Lion install, as each time I tried to do the system update to prepare for Lion installation, it cut off access to a good deal of information on my hard drive (to include additional user accounts on my Mac).

I finally resolved the situation by doing a clean install of Snow Leaopord on another hard drive, then restoring from time machine, running the system updater and then finally installing Lion. It's been working like a charm.

My suggestion is that some of the folks who are having issue with Lion and blaming the OS, most likely have other underlying system issues; anything from bad or near failing hard drives to viruses.

I've read your post several times, and I'm still not sure why you're so livid. Apple's choice to eschew optical media was a business decision designed to save money, introduce Mac users to the App Store, and in general propel the industry forward toward downloadable software. Ascribing it to "arrogance" seems like unnecessary anthropomorphizing.

Since most households don't have more than one Mac, the issue you're raising simply won't come up in the majority of cases. For those that do, the Installer is freely copyable before it's used -- and totally free of DRM! Shocking in this era where most other software not only requires a unique serial number but regularly "phones home" to check its validity.

I do agree that asking the user whether the Lion installer should be deleted or not would have been a nice touch. ;)

HI! I am a new I love everything Apple who is only just new 2 months ago, i would like the time I spent on Windows back grrr I was reading the sites where people were having problems, some, and most not, I did not know what to do so I took the plunge and installed perfectly and HOW did it regain 20 gb of space?

I had to go to bed and see what I woke up to, and Lion installed perfectly my system ZOOMS and I am so happy! It might be the different hardware or apps/programs that are causing problems or a certain machine, I have no idea but after being saddled with Windows for all of these years WOW I am in LOVE with apple! I can't see alot of changes yet but maybe that is good. I boought a gently used IMAC and I love it

Sorry, but Lion has been the worst OS I have ever had the misfortune of using.

Of the first six applications I tried to launch, four failed. I will not go into a lot of detail, but I have been on line and on the phone with Apple support for over 8 hours Friday and today.

The reason I bought a Mac was because not only was it supposed to be the most stable OS out there but the guys who sold it to me told me it would also run the important Windows programs I need with VMWare Fusion.

I was told today, on the phone, by the Apple support rep that I would never be able to run Windows apps on Lion and they have no intention of fixing it.

So I have rolled back to 10.6, from the original install disks, and will have to follow a long procedure to get it back to 10.6.8. This is simply not acceptable.

Even when I was upgrading from Windows 95 to 98 to XP, before the installation began a scan was done of your computer telling you what software wasn't compatible. With Lion no one knew until afterwards.

And if you follow the threads, it's NOT A SMALL number of people who are having issues.

The purpose of a discussion group is for people to air their difficulties and others to offer help.

So if you don't want to see how many people are having difficulties, and cant offer helpful suggestion, then somewhere on your computer is a power button. If Lion has rendered that useless then try unplugging your computer and you can hide your head in the sand like an osterich.

I don't understand your complaint. VMWare Fusion 3.1.3 works fine under Lion. I'm running it right now. VMWare has confirmed that it works, though it's officially not yet supported. To be sure, the software itself has a plethora of bugs unrelated to Lion, and I wish VMWare were better about providing regular updates.

But how is any of this related to Lion? Your statement that you were told you "would never be able to run Windows apps on Lion and they have no intention of fixing it" is baffling. Sure you can run Windows apps on Lion -- just use an emulator, as you've been doing!

There's no minimum IT competency requirement either for buying a Mac or for participating in these forums. In contrast, one of Apple's core marketing messages is the famed simplicity of the user experience. This community surely exists so that people of all levels of experience and knowledge can raise issues and help each other with potential solutions. Perhaps folks who consider the prospect of helping less advanced users as being overly onerous or objectionable should refrain from participating? They may otherwise discourage new Apple users from feeling sufficiently welcome to ask for any help they may need - help that the generous majority of community members seems readily able and willing to provide.

I am pretty pleased with Lion so far- though I did have a major issue that got resolved with an Apple rep on the phone. Once Lion installed and I went to the login screen, I noticed that two of my accounts were not listed (one of them being the only administrator account on the machine). Of the other two accounts, one of them now required a password though I had never set on for it in SL. Was pretty frustrating but thankfully got it resolved.

Did anyone else have an issue similar to that?

Suggestion to ALL you "Happy" users of Lion: Just TRY using any website that uses Flash, Notice all the ads missing? Notice if it uses adobe flash to access things like your video cam it does not work? Even the buttons to Install it are turned off. When the MANY sites that use it for their ads realize that they are NOT there anymore, ads they PAID $$ for. Site that people PAID money for? ALL useless. NO where is there ANY warning of this happening. Even the folder after install where it put a program that wouldn't work (Virus prog) did it put ANY of the Adobe Flash components. Now I know the beef with flash on iPhones & such... But you're alienating MANY Mac users...

NOT a Happy Camper here...

On a GOOD note, lol I did not have troubles with install....

I tried, and did not notice anything wrong with Flash, either on Safari and Chrome. Maybe there is a problem with your flash plugin ?

Anyway, never ever used Safari on my Mac, I use Chrome since the very first day. 🙂

Everybody settle down about Lion!
