I got a fd share me a disc
That would be illegal, so it'd be best not to post that here. Read the SLA for Lion/AppStore download.
Yes you would need a bootable Lion disc or USB key to reinstall as far as I know. Once you've installed it there is no way to extract the installer though
I am not able to edit the message, but anyway my machine come with LION and I have the right to have / create a recovery disc. I think the root cause is that Apple don't provide the DVD for user, and not my problem. I have the rights to have the disc in case my things die right? I think it is APPLE's responsibility to sent us back the recovery disc. Saving a disc won't save them big money but adding a lot of time for us when recovering the things incase of crash.
I am disappointed about it. Removing the recovery disc is really not a good idea.
I know you meant nothing bad - it was just a word of caution. And yes, you are entitled to a backup; the problem is that the SLA is worded in a way that makes giving away copies violate the SLA, so you didn't do anything - your friend needs to be careful about distributing copies. And, the way it functions, it is not just tied to the User ID, but also the machine ID, so if you ever need to use it, it (or any subsequent updates) may or may not work.
I wish Apple would have warned me it would delete the download. I installed a 750 gb hard drive in my MacBook before switching to Lion. I had plenty of room. Come on Apple. Let me worry about whether I need to delete the installer. It took four hours to download this the first time. I guess I will have to spend another four hours downloading this if I want a backup. Boo!
Many people who are similarly annoyed about the deletion without notification have filed feedback here:
I think,
That Apple would have received many more complants at every upgrade, had they left close to 3/4G of data laying around—especially since they create a recovery partition.
In the Mac ecosystem most people will never touch the download again, especially after months have gone by. And those people who do know of its existence will be savy enough to retain a copy.
There are one or two cases where you may actually need an off-line copy, but for the vast majority of users the Mac is about 'just make it happen' and don't bother me with the details.
And for Orville's complaint, the initial install you did have to wait on it, but you are fully operational now. You don't have to wait as it will download while you are living life normally.
I know that a few have made it out to be a pain because it is different than the last 25yrs—Technology & Systems always move. And this is a good move overall.

RoyalFlush, you're missing the point. We're here because we're having issues and/or want a backup of what we purchased. Apple shouldn't voluntarily delete our purchases for us. You should stop acting like a jerk.
Thanks, Alan! That's exactly what I was looking for!
