"This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes."

I have a 27inch 2.7Ghz mid 11 model w Lion and iTunes 10.4. Getting an error message from iTunes "This movie requires QuickTime, which is not supported by this version of iTunes." Happens to some video podcast. For example, I did a search on el bulli and came across a list of Podcast Episodes. Video:A Day at El Bulli Book Lunch Party works but El Bulli: Cocina conc... by Emprendedores does not.

I must point out that it also says that I can not gather any information on Emprendedores because it's not available in the Australia Store, not sure if that's the reason why I can not view the video.

I'm glad to have started this thread, with all the additions by the faithful. 😁

As of today (2012-07-20), I have successfully downloaded the full HD 3rd season of "The Good Wife" (Julianna Margulies, sigh 😍) and .....

.... it plays! And there was much rejoicing! And the people slaughtered the lambs, and the orangutans, and the Fritos, and the Count Chocula, and ....

I am currently executing iTunes 10.6.3 (25) on OS X 10.7.4. I am looking forward to another season of Fringe and Criminal Minds, and whatever else Hollywood can addict me to.....

Thanks for all your help,

Na Zdrowie,

karl

Hi,

This is useful, I tried it but when I get to the GET INFO section, I cannot see any option that allows me to open in 32 bit?

The sections that I see are:

- Spotlight comments

- General

- More Info

- Name & Extension

- Preview

Can't see any option to open in the 32 bit that you had suggested. Am having the same problem as you, some podcasts won't play and tells me this itunes version does not support quicktime

If you don't see a checkbox for "Open in 32-bit mode" when you look at the "Get Info" screen of iTunes located in your Applications folder, this leads me to belive any of these are possible:

  1. You have not updated to the latest version of iTunes. Old enough version of iTunes may not be Universal (include both 64-bit and 32-bit binaries).
  2. file /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes (for architecture i386): Mach-O executable i386 /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit executable x86_64

  3. OSX is booting in 32-bit mode (10.5 -10.7) or is not 64-bit capable (10.4 and lower). If you are booted to a 64 bit kernel, it should show in "uname -a" as x86_64 instead of i386.

    uname -a Darwin Mufasas-Mac-Mini.local 12.1.0 Darwin Kernel Version 12.1.0: Tue Aug 14 13:29:55 PDT 2012; root:xnu-2050.9.2~1/RELEASE_X86_64 x86_64

  4. You are not using a 64-bit capable Mac. In this case, you aren't affected by this specific iTunes protected content playing issue. Something else is causing your problem.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem, to solve it I selected the film I had just bought, deleted it but used the delete but 'keep files' option. Then I selected file/Add to library and navigated to the movie file in the itunes folder which is iTunes/itunes/movies. The film was re-added to my collection and hey presto it worked... I had to do the same for the iTunes extras bit too.

This error & fix may be only have occurred or work because I use a networked drive to store my iTunes collection... but it worked 🙂

I have received this message on 2 separate occasions now. I have noticed that on both occasions, the download stream was interrupted for whatever reason, and later resumed.

The latest occurrence was with 2 rented movies from the iTunes store.

I followed Ezat's advice and deleted the movies from the library. However, just in case it did not give me the option to keep the file, I copied them out of the Media folder onto my desktop.

On deleting from the library, I was not given the option of keeping the file, so glad I had backed them up.

I then added the files from the desktop to the library - iTunes now recognises them, the artwork is there and the error message has disappeared (without having to change iTunes to 32bit mode).

Hello all,

I tried most of these solutions and nothing worked for me for the same error message. So I gave up and called Apple. Talked at length with their level 1 support and nothing they did solved the issue. Got transfered to level 2 and after trying a few things we decided to reinstall the OS as the tech thought that for some reason maybe my quicktime got corrupted. Well you know what, it worked perfectly. No downgrading to itunes 32-bit, no importing files and deleting them and re-importing them etc.

For us newbie, we want something that works as advertised and this does.

Here is what we did.

1. shut down the Mac

2. restart and hold down the command-R keys until after the chime

3. You'll get a special recovery screen, choose reinstall OS

4. this wil take a while. Don't worry, none of your prgrams, settings, anything gets affected. It was actually very painless.

5. delete any of the files that didn't work before and redownload them. I had 46 files that did not work and redownloaded them all and they all worked perfectly

By the way, my itunes library is on an external drive (Drobo FS), and it still worked.

Thought I'd share

good luck all

I have the same problem and solved it by 32 bit mode.

Here my critics towards Apple:

Still... Honestly .. come on Apple Guys!

You cant be serious. First renting some movie is far too expensive! Costs as mutch as renting a BD locally, and you guys don't even have to burn a disk. so ...

Then after waiting for the download it turns out the movie can't even be watched because a 64bit version of iTunes can't open up the right version of Quicktime to play this movie, spoiling the evening for my girlfriend because Ifirst have find a work around instead of watching a movie.

This is very bad user experience, which propably could be fixed with a few lines of code and some proper product management.

I have been trying to get my podcasts from my Human Physiology lectures to work with this problem. I had no problem viewing them unitl about 2.5 weeks ago (had about 5 weeks of lectures already on iTunes) and I suddenly started recieving the error message about iTunes not being compatable with QuickTime and therefore it wouldn't be able to play my podcasts since they required QuickTime.

I the 32bit fix and it worked, partially. I can now play the podcasts using iTunes but I have no ability to fast forward or rewind the podcasts which is odd. Also, they are not downloaded onto my computer. I looked, and there are no files for the podcasts. Whenever I try to click the cloud with the arrow on it (right side of the podcast row) it tries to download for about a second before stopping and showing an exclaimation point with a dotted line circle around it where the blue "un-watched" bubble usually is.

As I said, I can view after this, but not transfer over onto my iPad, which is how I really watch my podcasts, since I am often on campus away from my MacBook (which I don't like to carry because I'm worried of damaging).

Does anyone know what might fix the podcast file simply not downloading at all?

My system is Mac OSX Lion Version 10.7.5 and my iTunes is version 11.1.3 (8).

creamaster I am with you

2014 at this rate maybe I will not live to see the podcasts on my MBAir.

Or maybe I just need use my iPad as that works, Apple please could you pull one of their ios programmers over to the osx team for a few days to sort this out.

Please please Apple just fix it, as I love your little MBair and cant be bothered to jump through the 64 / 32bit stuff and the MBAir balances on my lap so much better than my iPad

** other than this I can't fault your product
