Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.

I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.

I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.

This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.

I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.

I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:

I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.

I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.

Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!

So it doesn't seem to be just me.

Anyone else?

Cheers.

I'm having the exact same problem that you describe. In some cases incoming mail appears in the inbox for a few seconds, but then dissappears and I'm unable to find it anywhere.

Yahoo-Apple problems: My sent emails from iphone are disappearing, from both the phone and yahoo on the web--they may be there once, then gone. They don't arrive at all in Mail on the macbook air. I'm not a tech expert... I've tried several things with the settings in Mail on the mac and iphone, including trying to add these servers on the iphone

* Incoming Mail Server (POP3): plus.pop.mail.yahoo.com

Use SSL, port: 995

* Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): plus.smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication.

Only the smtp is verified on the iphone, and i'm still having the same problems. I don't know how to fix this and it's urgent as I am losing valuable info!! Has anyone figured out the yahoo-apple issue with mail? I haven't found much other than complaints in the Yahoo forum, and I would really appreciate some help 🙂

Yahoo! is really problematic. Now, tks God, no more lost e-mails. It was solved I don`t know exactly when, but, many times the Yahoo! account came doubleded in iphone (I have to manually cancel one); some times the folders and messages of yahoo`s account desapear, and then comes again after sync... welll better this ways, but no completley solved

You just replied to someone who has not been here since July 2011, I don't think you will get help much here now, why don't you start your own thread.

Well well well. When apple crunshs someting we have to say, but when It doesn`t we also have to atribute the real facts to real guys.

I received an email from Yahoo! exaplaining some "issues" with IMAP account. And they`ve created a new folder in my email, named as "synced messages" for some "missed" emails.. And, guess what....My lost emails were really there.. tks...

Well, I'm not sure if this will solve the issue for others but I think I found *my* solution!

This problem started occuring when I upgraded my laptop to Lion. I use SpamSieve and once I manually upgraded it (after installing Lion), the issue disappeared. I'm not sure if I'll ever get all the "lost" emails back but just upgrading seems to have fixed my issue.

Hope that's helpful info for some others.

I too have had the problem off and on for nearly a year since upgrading to Lion. It is incredibly frustrating and I've created several solutions.

As previous posts have noted, I first suspected this was a matter of indexing. I noticed that for awhile Apple Mail was having trouble properly storing andlocating mail. The probem seemed to arise with the introduction of iCloud which somehow created duplicate accounts and folders for both .Mac and .Me email addresses as well as Gmail.

My solution has been to periodically re-import all Apple Mail boxes from the library using the Import function. In general while this creates some duplication or unwanted emails, it does work to restore emails that were deleted, especialy draft emails that I had formulated. I also save important emails to Gmail which is much more reliable as a cloud based email client than iCloud.

However more recently as more services migrate to the cloud I have learned about a more complex problem called "sync looping". In this issue, synchronizing between accounts if duplicated or redundtant can destroy your data. Soocial the online contact manager has a good article and "loop detector" which will help eliminate these problems. http://www.soocial.com/about/loops

Given the importance of resolving this for many of us who use Macs as tools of business, it would seem critical for Apple to step up to the plate and begint to respond to some of these questions.

I am constantly missing emails in Mail for my yahoo and .me email addresses. No problem with me email accounts hosted and accessed through GoDaddy. The reason that I know they are missing? Because they flash on the screen briefly then disappear forever. I have even sent an email to my husband in the same room, it flashes up on his iPhone screen, then disappears. Yesterday, a client emailed me from his pc saying that he had picked up my email on his iPhone and then it disappeared immediately before he could read and answer it. This is crazy. I can't just hope Apple Mail will work when it comes to business. Note: I am using a 2008 MacBook with Lion.

Likewise - I'm actually seeing emails on my Mac Air - then later they're gone. The seem to all by on my Mac Mini - but that doesn't help me when I'm at work. The Air's Mac Mail client is set to store local copies, so even if it's later deleted from the ISP, it should be there. Besides, none of my computers is set to delete emails. Certainly not immediately.

This morning I saw a pop up for an email from a friend. As I was getting ready for work, I glanced at the actual email. Now: it's gone. It's not in a folder: the only rule in the Mac Mail client is the one Apple puts there. It's no longer on my ISP - I can only hope that when I bumped the keyboard and the Mini woke up, it snagged the email. But WHY is it deleteing it off the server.

I'm getting VERY fed up with crap s/w from Apple and an apparent lack of interest on their part to fix the problems - this thread has been around for a while.

Johnny,

I never experience this problem, and typically the cause is using an account on more than one computer or device, some of which treat it as an IMAP account, while some as a POP account.

Storing messages with an IMAP account locally, if you mean the setting in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced for IMAP account, does not protect from another device removing it from the server. With an IMAP account the Inbox resides on the server, and local copy caches will be updated immediately upon connecting to what remains on the server.

Seeing the message briefly is completely consistent with the local copy first being seen, then having the cache corrected for the changes made on the server.

You should check every computer and device that accesses these accounts to see if any of them are mistakenly set up as Account Type POP.

Ernie - yeah - that was my fear - that it would keep it locally until it's deleted from the ISP. I *used* to have a POP setup on one machine (my old G5 - but with a two week delay before deleting, since my ISP did not allow me to keep unlimited messages. However, they're all IMAP at this time - and I figured I'd deal with converting one to POP later.

Sounds like if I want permanent copies, I'll need to convert one or more to POP.

Thanks.

If all devices are set up as IMAP, and none of them purposefully removes a message from the Inbox, then they will stay on the server -- subject to any policy of the provider, and some have rough 30 day limits on that.

You Copy (NOT Move) message to a mailbox you create on one computer to be On My Mac, and accomplish the same thing. Mixing use of an account as IMAP and POP is never a good idea.

Btw, this behavior with an IMAP is the same on any computer, in any email app, and not peculiar to Mail.
