outlook 2011

Hello,

I have a problem with Outlook 2011 running on Mac OSX 10.7 Lion. Outlook works without one needed function, ie SEARCH.

The search script is simply disabled. The same scripts works well in 10.6.8. Any idea?

Outlook requires that Spotlight indexing is on for the drive/partition it's database is on.

There's no need to use Terminal commands. Open the System Preferences and click on Spotlight. Click on the privacy tab. Drag and drop the icon for the drive into the right pane. That will immediately remove the existing index. Highlight the drive icon and click the minus button to remove it from the privacy field. A new index will be built.

After that, searching in Outlook should work.

Go to terminal

type

sudo mdutil -E /

this will reindex the Mac AND Outlook

I am not aware of anything that would make this not work.

Outlook mails are all stored in local files, just like Mail. The database contains the index of the mails etc, not the mails themselves.

If the above does not work, try rebuilding the Outlook Database. This is not as intrusive as it may sound.

Press down the Option key (between command and control) and while holding it click Outlook icon in the Dock. Click rebuild, the rest should be self-explanatory.

If this does not work, reply stating more install details. What Mac, what OS, what partitions etc.

Good luck!

The command doesn't index Outlook's database as a separate item. It just causes the OS to reindex the entire drive, which the Outlook data happens to be sitting on. Outlook accesses the same index as Spotlight to look for matching criteria.

You are correct that rebuilding the Outlook database itself with the Microsoft Database Utility could fix the problem.
