Drobo freezes 10.7 Lion Server

Drobo is attached to my Mac mini server via Firewire 800. Several other HDDs are connected via Firewire 800 Daisy Chain running without problems. Since the update to 10.7 Lion Server Drobo, which is the Time Machine destination for the server and three clients, freezes the server. When I want to shut down the server I have to disconnect Drobo, before that the server doesn't shut down. In this phase unmount of Drobo isn't possible. I have Drobo Dashboard 2.0.3 installed which shoud be Lion compatible. After reboot Drobo isn't even recoqnized, wether by OSX (not mounted) nor by Drobo Dashboard. Under Snow Leopard Server the same setup works very well. Anyone with a solution probsosal? For now I have several Macs without Time Machine backup, a really unpleasant situation.

I'm seeing the exact same behavior with a Drobo V2 attached to my Mac Pro via FireWire and I've also upgraded the Drobo Dashboard to 2.0.3.

I was hopeful that the new Dashboard and firmware had fixed my problem. (non-server Lion / Drobo 2nd Gen / FW connection).

But after 300GB of data transfer, everything locked up again. This was an improvement (prior to this, I never got past 90GB), but not a fix.

Oh, well. Maybe I can repurpose the drives in alternate enclosures.

I had a similar experience. I have a Drobo 2nd Gen. on FireWire and updated to 2.04 and the latest firmware. I tried a fresh Time Machine backup of about 730GB. It stopped at about 600+GB. I tried a total of three times and it froze each time. This is better than before when it would freeze after only 100GB or so but still far from stable. It's so sad this thing used to be bullet proof.

This is a request for comments by all posting here:

Since the "noise" generated here and elsewhere on the net about this serious iSCSI issue and Data Robotic's poor treatment of the problem, was/is very small and restricted, I can only assume that there are very few users deploying Lion Servers and Drobo iSCSI or in fact using iSCSI at all.

So small in fact that this whole issue never made it to Data Robotics upgrade pages or was openly discussed in their support pages. I just can't believe that this user group is so very small or not vocal enough.

Any comments would be most welcome.

I remember reading about this when I first got my Drobo FS. Since they seemed to work, and people were happy with it. I didn't let it affect my purchase. Yes, it is widely believed they delete posts, and feedback they don't like. As that goes Apple has been known to do the same here. I don't remember what incident it was, but a while back I read about people being pretty upset that Apple was "agressivly moderating" these forums over a certain unresolved issue. I know for a fact my posts on Sling Media's forums were ninja moderated when they were discontinuing a few products.

This is hardly new.

"[...] Please Data Robotics, building a community by removing posts you don’t like is not the way to go. You will always get praise & complaints and, as I said on Twitter, our complaints here are about how this transition was handled. They are not technical issues, hence not posted in the more Technical forums, but they are still valid issues.

Some complaints can be silly (I’d want my HD lights to be Indigo for instance) and some will be real. Good customer service & relations is to take it all, ignore those that you feel are invalid (or post to them & lock them BUT don’t delete them) and respond and encourage those that are valid (like complaints about connectivity options, like lack of Firewire connection on the DroboShare) with discussion. [...]"

Popped right up on google.

Well, looks like it is still not working for me on large file transfers/updates... I ran things without Drobo Dashboard for over two months and no problems. Within a week of installing the 2.0.4 release of Drobo Dashboard, my DroboS volume became corrupted and I had to wipe it and start over. The volume also still disconnects on large file updates (~1TB Aperture library updates).... Uninstalling Drobo Dashboard 2.0.4 *again* and running without it. What the **** is going on at Data Robotics?

@DrBWJones: I can only repeat myself for the 100th time, and maybe everybody should learn to *READ* before acting (no offense):

D R O B O D A S H B O A R D 2 . 0 . 4 D O E S *** N O T *** F I X P R O B L E M S O N N O N - I S C S I M O D E L S.

Drobo Dashboard 2.0.4 is ONLY fixing iSCSI issues on the iSCSI capable models.

How many times does this have to be written here before people understand this absolutely and totally easy to understand sentence?

The Drobo S (and other models that use USB and Firewire but do NOT use iSCSI) need a firmware update. Which is still being tested, as far as I can tell (they upload news builds almost daily to the Dropbox being shared to the beta testers).

Easy now there cryptochrome... A little social decorum might be nice.

This is pretty clear: Empirical testing shows me that if the Drobo Dashboard software is removed from the system, the drives work as expected. i.e. no time outs, no dropped connections, no unexpected unmounting of volumes and no data corruption. As soon as I install Drobo Dashboard on the DroboS, I get timeouts, unexpected volume unmounting, dropped connections and corrupted data. Remove Drobo Dashboard and everything works again as expected, just without the Drobo Dashboard. So... regardless of what you may think or what your understanding of the matter is, there is still a problem with Drobo Dashboard 2.0.4 on OS X.

Also, this new today: After updating, on my Drobo Pros(x2), Drobo Dashboard 2.0.4 cannot seem to recognize iSCSI.

As for Drobo Dashboard 2.0.3, I was hoping that the 2.0.4 would solve problems as 2.0.3 is awful in so many ways. I can at least transfer small datasets with 2.0.4

Oct 13, 2011 12:53 AM in response to DrBWJones

AGAIN: You are trying to use Dashboard 2.0.4 with the Drobo S. And that's your problem. Dashboard 2.0.4 is NOT for the Drobo S. The Drobo S Dashboard version is still 2.0.3. Please check the Drobo download website, scroll down to the Drobo S and read. Current version: 2.0.3. Enough said.

I don't have any problems with 2.0.4 and iSCSI.

And once more: The Drobo S needs an updated firmware to work with Lion. It is currently being beta tested.

To put it another way: The Drobo S still does not work with Lion, and no matter what you do about it, and no matter how many different Dashboard version (that are not supported for your device) you try to install: You will not get it to work until a new firmware and a new Dashboard version are released for the Drobo S.

This is not just my understanding of the matter, this is first hand from Drobo staff.

So go ahead and keep playing if you want to waste more time. If I were you, I would simply wait until there are new software releases for your Drobo S.
