What Samsung Printer Drivers work with Lion?

Upgraded to Lion and my Samsung ML-1740 printer no longer prints. Printer worked on Leopard and Snow Leopard with gutenprint drivers but no more with Lion OS. Samsung says so sorry and Apple support sent me here. Has any Samsung 1740 owner found a printer driver that will work with Lion OS? Thanks...JS

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), Printer worked with 10.6, not 10.7

There are four different ways to get your Samsung ML-1710, ML-1740, or ML-1750 printer to work in Lion:

Samsung Driver from Samsung Australia

http://samsung.com/au/support/detail/supportPrdDetail.do?menu=SP01&prd_ia_cd=&pr d_mdl_cd=&prd_mdl_name=ML-1740

Download the link under "Driver" that has the file WebLBP_SPL2.zip (Version 0.97, 04 Dec 2008). The 1710, 1740, and 1750 are compatible with each other, so it will work with all of them.

Note that, with computer equipment, it's very common for manufacturers to abandon support for something in the United States, while the exact same product continues to get support and/or updates in other countries. If you ever again have trouble finding a driver for an older product, look for them on the web sites of the manufacturer's non-U.S. offices.

Also, there are some open source projects which enable printing on older Samsung printers in 10.6/10.7:

Samsung-GDI

GutenPrint

SpliX

You said that GutenPrint was working in Snow Leopard but stopped working when you upgraded to Lion. Did you do the obvious, like re-install it? %-)

I must be doing something wrong. I've tried downloading all the drivers suggestested, deleted and added the printer again, but still nothing. When I add the 1710 again, I have to go search for the driver, and I can find tons of Samsung drivers that I downloaded in the links provided, but there's not one there for either the 1710 or 1740. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

My problem is that the only Splix Files I can find are .zip or .pkg or mpkg files, and when selecting the driver for the printer, it won't let me select files with those extentions. I thought when I ran the zip, and then the install file, a different Splix file would be created that I could use as the driver, but there doesn't apear to be one.

For those who have noticed that the http://guigo.us/mac/splix/ site is now down, I found another fix that worked for me on my new Lion 10.7.2:

It requires you to install two other programs besides the driver, but it worked for me. Make sure you follow the directions in the ReadMe for printing to happen.

Best,

Brian
