How can I prevent mail attachments embedding when sending mail

In Lion when I send out an image - the recipients are receiving them as embedded images instead of simple attachments. I know in previous version of mail, having windows friendly attachments enabled solved this, but it doesnt seem to be helping in Lion mail.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7)

It definitely did but I actually did not test the effect on on my recipients in my haste. So I reverted it back and did a test. You are corrrect in that it did not change the display of the attachment for the recipient (at least not yahoo mail recipients). They still see the attachment the same way but it DID change how the attachment appears in MacMail when composing the message. Without this tweak, my PDF attachment is showing up full page as if I typed it in the message. With this tweak, it just shows up as an Icon. It's much more user friendly although it would be nice if it put the attachment in the header like Outlook but I can live with this...

If I send attached images out from iPhoto directly by mail, they go out as attachments, not embedded.

Can you prove that? That's a trick question because I know you can't.

Apple keeps missing the simplest issues. We should also be able to size the images from mail and not have to go to iPhoto for that.

Agreed. Apple should add a control to the bottom right corner of each message allowing you to change the size of the image or something.

Well, I have been searching this and other posting boards and I found this...

for Lion users, try (in Terminal):

defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool true

It worked for me. Let me know if it works for anyone else. I just didn't like the idea of paying $15 to fix a bug (or add functionality, for those of you claiming that this inline thing is a "feature") that Apple should have taken care of.

I'm not trying to get in one of your famous arguments. I'm just saying it worked for me. One caveat. I can't put any text into the message or the image goes back to being inline (that wonderful feature you've been raving about) but at least now I can send images that people on PCs can actually use.

How does it work? I have no idea. Maybe magic. Maybe Jesus. I really don't care.
