save as missing in lion

For those of us who make modifications to a document on a regular basis, but need to retain the previous versions, or who need to keep the same revised document in several places, the removal of "Save As" is a disaster. In order to save as, you must, apparently, first export the document as a WORD or PDF, then after doing that, close the pages document, (Then a save as comes up,) allowing one save as and automatically closing the document. I have a series of files that i must keep in several locations, and they all change weekly, but I must be able to reference past copies as well. It aqppears that the only way to do this is to buy WORD and forget about Pages. Surely this must be a mistake by a committee who does not do word processing, or am I alone in this type of use?

I WORK, Pages-OTHER, Mac OS X (10.7)

I've been using Macs for 20+ years. I have various Apple products. I follow the news, I update when appropriate.

However, some of the changes in Lion, such as the omission of Save As, seem retrograde. Of course there are several ways around it, but none as simple. I believe in progress but, somewhere in the back of my head, someone is quietly chanting: "If it ain't broke ......

Does anyone know if it's possible to TURN OFF versions? And, what happens when you do? Does it make saving simpler or more complex??

Just wondering.

Right now I'm sticking with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and happy with it. But, have read this entire thread and in the back of my mind I thought I read somewhere else that versions could be turned off. ??

I was and am happy with Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and I will not upgrade to Lion. As you said "If it aint't broke…"

I'm with you, fruhulda, totally!! After reading all about Versions (and I understand where Yvan is coming from about changing, etc.), I don't think I would like it at all!! So I'm sticking with Snow Leopard!! And, I did let Apple know about it!

I don't think many people were looking for that solution yet, also I think the alert message seems new coming with 10.7.3.

I think a lot of OSX users haven't come across the new saving behaviour, they learn about it as they lose data because of it. I just told a few people who use macs daily and they had no idea—their software isn't using autosave/versioning yet.

Let's wait until large software suites that deal with large files (Adobe CS) implement this borked saving paradigm… But the truth is, people who use computers for work are no longer Apple customer base and they don't care.

I understand all App Store apps are forced to use the new saving API from March 1? Is that right?

I understood the same 😉

We will have to live with the new scheme or leave the system. It's just what I wrote for months.

I'm not trying to dream what an operating system must be, I try to use the existing one in the better way.

I started this post right after Lion came out. I was dismayed, upset and filled with disbelief that Apple, once again, would try to save me from myself. SAVE AS was basic, and integrated into software from every company that allowed a document to be modified. I really believed Apple would see the many unhappy posts and quickly realize what a huge mistake they had made. It made no sense to have versions and templates and multiple copies and several steps to do what one step did perfectly.

Well, 2 weeks ago, I solved the problem and I now have SAVE AS back in my word processing life. It was a simple fix, although it cost me a bit...I bought MICROSOFT WORD for MAC. I have never been happier since I bought my first MAC...a time when SAVE AS worked, when I could alter an original document and make changes and save it while keeping the original with one fast and simple click. And I can find my changed documents becaues I can put it exactly where I want to put it under the new client name or any place else to fit MY way of doing business.

THANK YOU MICROSOFT...wake up Apple...Dont buy Pages or Keynote or Numbers...buy Microsoft Office
