save as missing in lion

For those of us who make modifications to a document on a regular basis, but need to retain the previous versions, or who need to keep the same revised document in several places, the removal of "Save As" is a disaster. In order to save as, you must, apparently, first export the document as a WORD or PDF, then after doing that, close the pages document, (Then a save as comes up,) allowing one save as and automatically closing the document. I have a series of files that i must keep in several locations, and they all change weekly, but I must be able to reference past copies as well. It aqppears that the only way to do this is to buy WORD and forget about Pages. Surely this must be a mistake by a committee who does not do word processing, or am I alone in this type of use?

Question asked and answered several times.

As we aren't supposed to design the applications, we must use them the way they are designed.

Open a file from the remote Mac

File > Duplicate

Close the original

File > Save… allow you to save the replicate with the wanted name and location.

I couldn't agree more with the majority of posters here. WHY IN THE WORLD do the geniuses at Apple have to force completely new and unique workflows upon us? This is just STUPID. It's "SAVE AS" morons, stop trying to fix things that are NOT BROKEN!!!!!!!!!

moron yourself !

They didn't wanted to fix something. They open a new era.

You will have to enter it or leave it.

Ah yes, now we get to partake of the French attitude on the Apple Discussion boards...parfait. I am quite well aware that I "will HAVE to enter it or leave it" and that is PRECISELY my point! Apple is FORCING us to adopt the new workflow that THEY deemed appropriate. This was not presented as a new option or additional feature, it was forced upon all of us and it is stupid. Therefore I stand by my statement: the developers at Apple, for ignoring their customers and forcing an unnecessary and confusing change upon us, are morons. As a socialist you are no doubt more accustomed than Americans at having things forced upon you.

I already reported your late message and will report this one too.

Read the System License which you agreed when you installed the operating system. You will see that Apple is free to change what they want when they want.

I'm now 68 years old and it's the first time that somebody describe me as a socialist 😉

I understand that they have the "right" to make the changes they deem as usefull. That does not make those changes good, needed or necessary. To blindly move forward without regard for your customers in this fashion is in my opinion, moronic. EVERY other word processing system that has ever been used has had a "Save as" function. Millions of people, including myself, use this function on a daily basis and to simply remove it completely, offer no reasonable explanantion as to why this was done nor provide an equivalent workaround is again, in my opinion, moronic. I'm not calling you a moron, but instead the people at Apple who have forced this upon us.

With regard to socialism; if one lives in a socialist country and elects socialist leaders does that not make that person a socialist? I live in a capitalist country (at least it is for the moment) and own my own company, that makes me a capitalist, does it not? Your healthcare is run by the government and you are taxed at a very high rate in order to pay for that service, that is socialism. Once hired by a company the government does not allow that company to fire you; that is socialism. If you buy expensive items such as cameras or fine art you are taxed for those "luxury" items, are you not? That is socialism. I did not mean anything rude or negative by my statement; I simply felt that as a Frenchman you are more accustomed to having things forced upon you. Whereas Americans have always been raised on the pretext that the customer is always right and to have something this ridiculous forced upon us is quite contrary to the norm, ESPECIALLY for Apple.

I'm sorry that you took offense at my statement, that was not my intent. And I still believe that these actions by Apple are indeed moronic. If you have no problem with the convoluted process by which we are now forced to save a document that's fine, but I believe that you are very much in the minority with that opinion.

I have noticed that some people, as they reach advanced age, tend to overreact to change and lash out at those who introduce change into their lives, sometimes by calling them names, like moron. It seems to be sort of a return to childhood. I hope this doesn't happen to me in two years when I turn 80. Until then, I am content to manage the horribly "convoluted process" of saving a document under a different name in Lion.

(1) The fact that every other Word Processor has a Save As… item doesn't make that an eternal feature carved in stone.

(2) I didn't wrote that you described me as a moron.

I reported the fact that you described Apple Engineers this way.

(3) I wrote several times that, for years, when I wish to be able to create documents starting from an existing one, I define this one as a template.

Given that, for me the new scheme is perfect.

(4) Apple has always be a company defining what it wished to be the norm.

They delivered the first computer using GUI.

They delivered the first computer using several fonts.

They dropped the diskettes.

They replaced their old interface by USB.

They introduced FireWire.

They dropped Hypercard when they decided to do that.

They dropped macWord when they decided to do that.

They dropped macPaint when they decided to do that.

They dropped AppleWorks when they decided to do that.

They dropped the xServe when they decided to do that.

They replaced the old Final Cut by a revolutionary Final Cut when they decided to do that.

They were the first to introduce Thunderbolt.

Now, they drop the CD/DVD.

And this list is far from complete.

Next year you will see that many apps deliver menus without a Save As… menu item.

Moronic means doing something stupid, repeatedly. Like dropping the "Save as" function from pages, like dropping "Drop shadows" from Final Cut pro, like completely changing how a non linear editor functions and forcing (yet again) thousands of followers to change their workflow, like making the latest version of Final Cut incompatible with all previous versions, like deciding upon themselves to not support BluRay in their "Pro" level editing program (how about letting the pro's decide that for themselves thank you very much)...

I spend a great deal of time on numerous discussion boards based upon the fact that I have a video production company to run and I use all Apple products. What I am seeing, time and again, are all sorts of people who are VERY frustrated at the numerous dumb decisions that Apple has made over the past year. These decisions directly affect my, and many other's, ability to deliver a final product. There are major production companies that are dropping Final Cut Pro because of this. There are many people who are furious with Apple for what they've done to Final Cut Pro. And so, after months of frustrations with numerous other programs, I updated Pages and lo and behold I now also no longer have something as simple as a "Save As" function. Did I lash out, yup, sure did! Do all of these things seem stupid to me? Yup, sure do. So thanks again for the fatherly lesson, but when a company continuosly messes up my day to day operations and makes my job more difficult than it needs to be I will lash out and call a spade a spade.

While I too miss the Save As function and found it quicker than the new Duplicate function (which would be greatly improved just by adding a key command) what I do not miss is losing work because I forgot to Save. Although some programs have an Auto Save function, even these are periodic and I would, from time to time, have something happen that caused me to lose work. I think this was the whole point of the change. It is a trade off .... The system constantly saves everything you do. In exchange you have to Duplicate a file to change the name. Perfect .... no. Worth it ... Depends on how often you were affected by the loss of un-saved work.

Btw ... There are no true capitalist goverments anymore, just as there are few true socialist governments. In a true capitalist system ... companies are not "bailed out" when they have financial problems. They die and something else takes their place. Our government has "chosen" to bail these companies out, purportedly for the "greater good". Companies often recieve special tax breaks, free land and other types of "government assistance" with the hope that the local area will create more jobs. Not exactly true capitalism. France's economy is driven by the same "for profit" commerce that ours is. However they "choose" via elections to pay a higher tax rate in exchange for things like guaranteed health care, guaranteed education for their children and a guaranteed retirement.

Just my two cents.
