XP SP3 Never Responds to Migration Assistant Authentication Request

I am having the same exact issue. I have also tried to migrate from a parallels image(on a macbook pro) to an imac with the same lack of an issue.

Same issue here. Tried both WiFi and Ethernet with no success, the windows migrations assitent just keeps waiting and waiting...

Upon further thought, I just tried right clicking on the Migration Assistant on the PC and did run as and ran. I couldn't run it as an administrator but I did uncheck the box that has the "allow programs that could otherwise harm my computer...." So perhaps the next mode is to get it to run as an administrator. Its chugging away....

I want to migrate from a Windows XP SP3 too, but just to see if it depends on the operating system, I also tryed to migrate from another laptop with Windows 7 Pro and it fails in the same way.

Under a temp directory in Windows there's a SystemMigration.log with some details that may be useful to the support service. When the migration assistant starts on Windows it logs several activities related to user data scanning:

The sequence continues over and over until Migration Assistant on the Mac is open trying to authenticate.

Hope someone could help.

Reminds me of Windows 7's HomeGroup with a generated passcode.

7. On the PC, once you see the passcode displayed on the Mac, click "Continue" to proceed.

Do you see a list of folders to select?

1. The Mac will then begin to inspect your computer and build a list of information to migrate.
2. Select the information you would like to migrate to the Mac, then click Continue to proceed.

Yes, I also have exact same problem. I also turned off Windows Firewall, disabled the viruscanner, but still just sits there same as Christian describes.

Tonight an update to the Bonjour service was installed by the Apple Updater in the Windows PC.

Bonjour service should be involved in the migration assistant connection process since it pubblishes the migration assistant in the local network. Now Bonjour on Windows is at version 1.0.106.

However, still no luck with the connection.

Same results, or lack of, here. Bought a new iMac in early June, and after reading that Lion would have the functionality to transfer over my PC files wirelessly, waited patiently for Lion to roll out. It did, I did all the steps, and as all of you, got a whole lot of nothing. I called Apple Support, was told that they had been getting a lot of calls on the topic, and it was suggested that I hook the two computers up with a cable, and do the migration like that. I didn't, and it appears from some here that it wouldn't make a difference anyway. I'm not that impressed with my first Apple computer experience, sorry to say.

Try completely removing antivirus software, not just disabling it.

I have one Windows computer left in my home and I was trying to use a particular piece of software a few months ago. I communicated with that manufacturer about what the issue could be. First they recommended disabling AV software. That did not help. In the end, after much investigating, they recommended completely removing my antivirus.

Note: In my attempts to disable it, I turned it off from its own control panel and also in MSCONFIG start up items.

None of that helped. I finally did completely remove it with the removal utility found on the AV company's website.

I have had no issue with that software I was trying to make work since.

My point is that antivirus software typically does more harm than good.

Wow. I'd like to think that Apple would be able to design something that wouldn't require the REMOVAL of anti-virus SW, in order for it to work. Am I naive?

btw, I'm using Windows Defender and NOD 32, disabled them in one of my many attempts to get this working, (to no avail), but I think I'll wait a bit more, before I go to the extreme of removing them.

Naive? I don't know. But keep in mind antivirus is very unpredictable and extremely invasive.

In my past Windows experience, it runs much better without any sort of real-time scanner and safe Internet-browsing practices. On my remaining Windows 7 computer, there is no real-time scanner. But I run 3 manually triggered utilities every week or so. I never have any issues.

I'm seeing the exact same problem with an XP SP3 machine. The PC never shows the prompt to verify the passcode.

I have the same issue myself with a brand new Mac Mini running Lion (shipped with Lion). Did all updates and upgrades with Software Update and App Store.

Windows Migration Assistant just sits there and doesn't authenticate. No firewalls are enabled (Windows or otherwise on either computer), no virus software is installed.

It appears the Windows Migration Assistant simply doesn't work from Windows XP SP3. I'm sure M$ would do whatever they can to prevent it from working so it doesn't really surprise me. However, it does make me look like a total &%$#@ to my friends as I've convinced them to change to Apple Mac since they can transfer most of their stuff automatically.
