XP SP3 Never Responds to Migration Assistant Authentication Request

I've been using Macs for years and years and PCs for years and years before that. My parents have hung onto their XP machines as long as they (and I) could stand and it's now time to move them over to Mac. I remember the very painful days I spent migrating my Windows Outlook email and address book over to the Mac and swore I'd never go through that again. So when I heard Lion would have a Windows Migration Assistant that works with Outlook, I was nearly ecstatic. That was some days ago now and I now wish I'd just done the migration the old painful way because I'd be done by now.

I have two systems running Lion, one brand new Mini that came pre-installed with Lion and one brand new 17" MBP that came loaded with Snow Leopard but was immediately upgraded to Lion using the App store. I also have two Dell desktops running XP Pro SP3 that's fully up to date with Windows Update. I have exactly the same experience with Migration Assistant on both pairs of machines:

  1. I download and installed Migration Assistant for Windows
  2. I connect the Mac and the PC via an Ethernet cable
    • Both computers acknowledge that there's ethernet present.
    • The Mac can actually browse the XP machine's hard drive.
  3. I run Migration Assistant on the Mac and take it up to the point that it's looking on the network for a computer to connect to.
  4. I run Migration Assistant on the XP machine
  5. The Mac now sees the XP machine in Migration Assistant
  6. I select the XP machine and continue to the authentication step
  7. The Mac spits out an authentication code
  8. The XP machine appears to be waiting to hear from the Mac
  9. Everybody waits for everyone else
  10. Two hours go by
  11. Nothing ever happens.

So, I tried a few things:

  • I rebooted everybody and that changed nothing.
  • I tried it over and over for two days and that changed nothing.
  • I tried reversing the order of steps 3 & 4 above, no difference in the outcome.
  • I tried connecting the two computers via USB, but they never saw each other.
  • I called Apple tech support. The first guy reviewed the steps with me and suggested very nicely that I call Microsoft (LOL). I asked him to escalate the case and he sent me to someone else who did actually seem to know what he was talking about. That person said I should give the XP machine up to 20 minutes to notice the authentication request from the Mac. That's why step 10 is in there above.

So if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Yesterday the ´Apple Software Update´ on my PC installed an update of Bonjour (I think it said 1.0.6, but my Software list reports 1.0.106). Note that the Windows Migration Assistant installs Bonjour.

I did not change a thing and I´m having the same kind of error messages both in the log files both on the Windows and the Mac site.

Today, after hearing about 10.7.1 I did an update over there as well ... and went from excitement to disappointment again. The problem still exists.

Spent about 30 minutes on the phone with Apple Support yesterday, and hours implementing changes today, and still not working. The last setup:

Bonjour updated two days ago and running.

Windows Defender disabled in Services, and removed from Startup.

ESET NOD32 disabled in Services, (which I had to do in SAFE mode), and removed from Startup.

Windows Firewall on, but with Bonjour and Migration Assistant set as exceptions.

Mac and PC connected via Ethernet, WiFi turned off on Mac.

The PC is visible in Migration Assistant, and I get a code to use, but the PC never sees the MAC.

Waddya think, folks? Should I just give up, move the stuff over by pulling it from my backup drive, (the email sounds like it's a pain), wait for Apple to fix this, or see if I can get them to do it in the Apple Store at no charge?

I was able to use MobileMe and GoogleSync (combined) to create my address book (the biggest pain for me) The only other thing, so far, was my photos which I moved by an external drive.

I have Parallels also. That was being restricted by a bad sector on my PC hard drive (check disk fixed that) and multiple partitions. It took 3 weeks (off and on) to get Parallels running. I don't need too much fun in my life.

For us files are not a problem; for starters you can just copy them across the network using finder on the Mac or Explorer on the PC, plus most of ours are on a NAS anyway.

The issues for us are emails from outlook (I've started testing adding an IMAP 4 account and uploading the emails to that from Outlook and then fetching them on the MAC), and bookmarks from IE.

Apple really need to fix this, and people should keep pressure on them until they do.

It's not that easy for me to go to the Apple store because it's a 120km trip, but it's tempting to go there and ask the geniuses to help with windows migrate (since it's from a laptop) and see if they will do the transfer the "manual" way when it fails.

Here it is October 18th 2011, and the Windows Migration Assistant still fails under Windows XP. That's a real shame because there are a lot of us out here stuck on XP, contemplating a painful update to Windows 7, and considering the Mac instead. Apple is really blowing it big time with this failure! I finally push my wife's CPA firm to get away from Windows and the very first piece of Apple software we try to use is broken. Reminds me of the Mac from 10 years ago! I've got until the 28th to find a way to convert 8 years of Outlook mail, contacts, and calendar into Mac format, or I'll be returning $3400 worth of Apple hardware to Best Buy.

Yes, I have given up with this too. Also the extra we paid to have help didn't come to anything. The best offer was to drive to the nearest Apple shop and take the old PCs and PAY them to transfer the files (although they said that transfering settings from Firefox and IE was not possible and that emails from Outlook may not work).

The way I got the Outlook emails across was to install Thunderbird on the PC and get that to read the Outlook PST file. After playing with Apple mail for a bit, it may end up being replaced with outlook again or Thunderbird anyway.

I have stopped worrying about that because a bigger problem we are having is to do with colour management, especially in Safari (important for a photographer!), and the fact that the iPod touch basically no longer works after iOS5; the calendar app is stuck trying to create an appointment, and the iPod crashes trying to any apps, oh and there's no "undo" to get it working again 😟

You might want to try using Google to help in this. It might not work anymore, since MobileMe is gone. I have a gmail account with a contact list, and a google calendar which synced both my home and work computer. Google would not link to Outlook but MobileMe would. So I had a three way synchronization. I don't know about iCloud since I don't need that level of synchronization.

Same situation over here. Windows XP SP3 worn't receive the passcode from Migration Assisatant running on a new iMac.

Setup: both computers are on an Apple Airport Extreme and the PC appears right away on the iMacs Migration Assistant. PC has auto updates disabled, AV disabled. Also failed to work from the Administrator account.

Any suggestions?

This is very bad for Apple's reputation even if the problem is on Windows end.

I'm having the same problem migrating from XP SP3. I've tried multiple scenarios as described in earlier posts, including the ones involving BitDefender. My target machine is a factory fresh iMac 21 inch. I am glad all the earlier posts included so many details so I can stop "rearranging the deck chairs". Rather than wait for a solution from Apple engineering to accommodate XP SP3 users, I think I'll revert back to the manual file migration process in Apple support article dated Oct 10, 2010.

Has anyone succeeded with XP SP3?

Oct 31, 2011 1:12 PM in response to Leoiki

There isn't a solution. I moved my stuff manually awhile back, using an external hard drive and O2M software for the Outlook mail. I could be wrong, but I think waiting for Apple to fix this won't be a very productive experience for you. It was both a disappointing and enlightening experince for me, as I moved from PC to Apple, with the lesson learned that Apple isn't always the knight in shining armor they are portrayed to be.

We opened a call because we tried this as soon as Lion came out. Tried all sorts of things. In the end, Apple just closed the call. As jmdaniel said, a very enlightening experience.

The Apple store offered to try to transfer things if we took all the computers there, but they wanted to be paid for it, and it is a long drive from here.
