Toshiba SSD vs Samsung SSD and inconsistent read/write speeds

I've heard that some of the 2011 Airs are shipping with Toshiba SSDs where others have the Samsung SSDs. Apparently the Toshiba ones are considerably slower and are more likely to be in the 13" models where the Samsung SSDs are more likely to be in the 11" models. I was curious if anyone out there has an 11" model with the 256GB option, and if so, which SSD did you get in yours? See here: http://9to5mac.com/2011/07/25/2011-macbook-air-ssd-speeds-are-not-consistent/#mo re-85182

Thanks

Cai Hua,

I have the Samsung SSD in my 11'' pro (the new 2011 model) and with Blackmagic Disk Speed test, I get 250 MB/s write speeds and 265 MB/s read speeds. There definitely is a speed difference between the drives (at least in this speed test's eyes). Real world performance, I couldn't tell you if there is a difference or not, but the Samsung appears to be the superior drive.

I actually got my first 11'' MBA with a Toshiba drive in it, and after reading about all these speed issues, I was pretty upset about getting an inferior product for the same price, so I went to the Apple Store, 'exchanged' it for another 11'', and it had the Samsung Drive in it. If it's really bothering you I would do the same, and like I said, I really don't know if this will make any difference in real world usage or not, but it just bothered me so much that I had an inferior product.

Cai Hua,

About your processor speed question,

The benchmarks for the 1.8 vs the 1.6 GHZ processor actually seem pretty significant, but really you have to see if it's worth it with what you're doing. If you're doing really intensive stuff (video editing, heavy aperture work, etc.) I'd recommend getting the 1.8 GHZ processor. However, if you're really just looking for a mobile laptop to do some basic productivity work on, you'd be wasting your money as you're simply not going to do anything where you'd even notice the speed difference.

Has anyone used the Blackmagic Disk Speed Test software program which can be found in the Mac app store, and do the disk speed for Sangsung SSD?

I ran this test from the new Macbook Air I picked up yesterday that got the Toshiba drive in it.

U got luck, but I got really bad luck!

I went to the apple store, swapd it with a brand new 13 inch MBA, n still got the Toshiba model at the second time. The apple staffs told me that I can only swap it once, so I was pretty upset n then went back home! n you know what, after I got home I found out that somewhere brand new MBA, the paint is peeled off. I should checkd the machine!!!

waste me so much time just on this !!! Dam!

If that paint is peeling off that's even more the reason to demand another exchange. Your product should operate and cosmetically look and work like a brand new computer, I'd demand a refund if my new MBA wasn't cosmetically perfect.

I've noticed after reading a lot of people's posts that more people get the Samsung SSD in the 11'' model, where I see more people getting the Toshiba SSD drive in the 13'' model. I'm not saying there aren't any, but I think the Samsung drives are rarer in the 13'' configurations.

I got the 11" MBA i7 and it came with the Toshiba drive but every single display model (four 11" and Four 13") all had the Samsung SSD.

But I just returned it today and got lucky with the next one being a Samsung SSD.

Event though the benchmarks and tests show a huge difference I decided to do a quick test in real life and made a video of it before I took back the Toshiba SSD model I got. Here were my results and I will post the video soon as well.

I took 3 clips of a promotional video I had made for my Offline Marketing Training Business.

I used only 30 sec of each clip and added 1 transition between each clip (2 total).

I then added a title and a end title as well.

So the clips were identical and I did the tests before I added any of my programs or my stuff from my cloned drive.

The video clips totaled 1 min 30 sec

Here are the results:

Toshiba TS256C = 2:00 minutes

Samsung SM256C = 2:00 minutes

So they both performed the exact same in this test.

I also got the exact same results when testing the new MBA Disk Speed as TechFast did in his video.

So I honestly dont think their is a real difference if both processed a 1:30 min video in 2:00 minutes exaclty? Maybe there would be a difference if you processed a 2 hour video of a few secounds? Obviously im just guesing on that one :-)
