What happened to Save As?

I use pages for my work invoices and have a pretty comprehensive filing for previous invoices. The omission of 'save as' in the lion version of pages is extremely frustrating. Is there a work around? Will they fix this in the future or should I switch to a microsoft excel worksheet?

Thanks. That was it. I guess the guys in the shop did that. Apple reseller. I guess they know how much of an issue it is and they disabled it on their Mountain Lion upgrade image. Or maybe after they installed it. I don't know. We don't use TextEdit so maybe it is ok to keep running it the way it was. The extra files showing up are nothing compared to the madness of versions. Is it dangerous to run it that way? Does it cause any other issues we should know about?

I have used Pages and Numbers for 5 years every day. I am not changing. I got Snow Leopard back on my computer. This is for my wife. She used Numbers and Pages to support me.

Should I turn this ApplePersistence thing on or off? I want to turn it off and get rid of Versions, but does it cause any issues? I know of the TextEdit issue but we don't use TextEdit so that does not affect me.

The extra files showing up don't worry us as we work with just a few files. Are there any other issues we should know about? Or can we just turn this thing off?

Thanks for helping by the way guys, I really appreciate it.

Dear all, I have just used Snow Leopard for 1 week, and I can say that it is awesome. It actually took me a while to get used to the simplicity of Save-As again, and to stop trying to export, duplicate etc. I didnt realize what I was missing. Therefore I want to say thank you for all the help and advice here. It matters to me. My workload is 10 times easier.

Mac OSX 10 7.5

I use Elements for some of my work and I started using the new elements 11(base code is CS6)

Guess what? they have changed the way SAVE AS works and also provisioned for versions to be save etc in their own way but you can turn it off etc.

However other little quirks are popping up with saving all over the place...

Also The latest MacFormat issue have a section this month discussing the 10 most important things that users are discussing and would like to see changed or implemented.

ITEM # 8 is the SAVE AS Macformat say many user are unhappy with it and would like to see it restored to its former self.

The only two Adobe apps I see in the App Store is Photoshop Elements, and Premiere Elements.

From what I've been able to gather from various posts on the subject, just to be in the App Store, your products need to support Autosave/Versions. So it's really not much of a surprise Save As is different in those apps.

However, it doesn't mean you can't give users the option to turn it off. Your apps just fall out of the App Store's "preferred" list.

When a company has great ideas the customers grab hold of them and want them. When a company has to force its ideas on people by giving their customers no choice and even force third party companies to comply, then the idea is clearly not a great one. The fact that Apple persist with this is insane.

Every time I use Pages on my iPad I hate the way it doesn't save a file I am working on. I don't love the iOS system. I love the portability of the device. But Apple think that I want the iOS system on my laptop and desktop because I bought an iPad. True insanity.

When the Microsoft Surface with full Windows operating system is sorted out in a few years time, people will move across to these fully functional tablets and the iPad will just look like a dumb device. Insanity.

Believe me, I thinks it's insane, too. And MS thinks Windows 8 is a great step forward in interface design? Have you seen that pile of dung? These huge buttons take over the screen at every turn. I can't think of a bigger waste of screen space. Launch an app? It also takes over the whole screen. Where is your desktop when you want to copy files between folders or devices?

The whole "Let's turn your work computer desktop into a practically useless and difficult to maneuver tablet like interface" is nuts. The worst part about it is that it's not driven with any type of thought given to usability and efficiency. It's all about "looks". Hate to tell them, but looks is not what gets work done.

I read a similar account on a car radio in Motor Trend, or some other car magazine. People who had purchased a particular model Japanese car (this is at least 5 years back, and I can't remember which model or make) were complaining about how small the buttons were on the audio system. The response from the company was that they didn't want to use bigger buttons because it wrecked the look they wanted. Huh? You were more concerned about looks than the driver's ability to see what the heck they were pressing, using buttons so small that taking your eye off the road for a dangerous amount of time was basically required?

Then that's a travesty. Apple should have absolutely no right to tell a respectable company how to write their software. An article in the current issue of Mac|Life noted some comments from developers about the App Store. Some of the newer versions of their products actually have less features than older versions because there wasn't a way to work around sandboxing and other current OS X security restrictions and still make those features work. So they just took them out.

Thanks for pointing this out. I am not seriously inconvenienced by the save as problem as I use Office and Illustrator and I'm still on 10.6. However, the next time I buy a computer I'm in trouble.

For me the most important are 1 and 10. To loose the find-by-file-name keyboard-command and be forced to use the trackpad to navigate a dropdown menu...

...and don't get me started on the useless trackpad on this 2000 dollar computer. It's bad enough that there is no clicker, but the pad itself does not work if your hands are too clean or too dry. Regularly I have to rub one finger into my scalp to pick up some sweat and grease to make it work (its the same on all my computers, not just one).

You don't have to look far to find evidence for the dumbing down of Mac OS. What has happened to the spell checker that used to underline your errors as you typed on this forum? Is it now un-PC to try to prevent one from displaying one's semi-literacy?

Lastly, at the bottom of the email that alerted me to this new content is written:

Did this help? Go to the message, sign in, and reply

So you click the link, and you do indeed get to the message as promised, but then you have to scroll to the top of the page to get the sign in link and that takes you away from the message and dumps you on the main search page from whence you have to navigate back. It's nothing if not entertaining.
