What happened to Save As?

Hi: I did not buy from the app store I purchased directly from Adobe. upgrade price.....

But it would be the same app, regardless of the source of purchase. At least I can't see any reason why Adobe would write two specific versions of the same app. Too much hassle, especially when they do give you a way to turn it off.

Adobe and several other companies specifically state that the app on the app store and the one purchased from their own site are not the same as they must/may make changes to comply with app store rules.

Then that's a travesty. Apple should have absolutely no right to tell a respectable company how to write their software. An article in the current issue of Mac|Life noted some comments from developers about the App Store. Some of the newer versions of their products actually have less features than older versions because there wasn't a way to work around sandboxing and other current OS X security restrictions and still make those features work. So they just took them out.

Long time no comments however all is well with the fight for the return of "SAVE AS" and your continued debate/complaints etc etc..

Thanks for pointing this out. I am not seriously inconvenienced by the save as problem as I use Office and Illustrator and I'm still on 10.6. However, the next time I buy a computer I'm in trouble.

For me the most important are 1 and 10. To loose the find-by-file-name keyboard-command and be forced to use the trackpad to navigate a dropdown menu...

...and don't get me started on the useless trackpad on this 2000 dollar computer. It's bad enough that there is no clicker, but the pad itself does not work if your hands are too clean or too dry. Regularly I have to rub one finger into my scalp to pick up some sweat and grease to make it work (its the same on all my computers, not just one).

You don't have to look far to find evidence for the dumbing down of Mac OS. What has happened to the spell checker that used to underline your errors as you typed on this forum? Is it now un-PC to try to prevent one from displaying one's semi-literacy?

Lastly, at the bottom of the email that alerted me to this new content is written:

So you click the link, and you do indeed get to the message as promised, but then you have to scroll to the top of the page to get the sign in link and that takes you away from the message and dumps you on the main search page from whence you have to navigate back. It's nothing if not entertaining.

Elo, I read that Apple may in the future move to using ARM chips in all their devices. That means dropping Intel chips for their own chips built around ARM designs, under lisence. This would require them to make a wholesale move of their laptop and desktop operating system to be able to run on these chips. That means merging OSX and iOS into one operating system. But since they plan to choose ARM chips, it means being more like iOS than OSX. Basically a massively improved iOS operating system, rather than getting iPads etc to run OSX. It's just a rumor. Steve.

That's a known problem with Jive, the software these forums run on. I'm a member of a couple other boards (Adobe's for one) that also use Jive, and it doesn't work on those, either.

Absolutely agree. Taking away "Save As" is the stupidest idea anyone has ever come up with.

When you're in a document and you decide you want your changes to be part of a new version it's pretty screwed that you can't "Save As".

Now that they have mutilated the function you have to duplicate before you make any changes and rename in order to do what save as did. The problem is sometimes you want the flexibility to decide on the fly whether or not you want to make indelible changes or not.

It's really useful to see what your "October Budget" said and then when you make a new update and tinker away you may decide you want to have both the history of the old file and the updates and changes.

Whoever made this change is a flippin idiot. There are absolutely no benefits to the new system of duplication.

See my instructions in this thread to return Save As to its normal behavior. Note that it requires Mountain Lion. You can't do any of this in Lion.

Exactly. Who makes new documents from scratch? I open an old formatted one, edit and "SAVE AS" to place it where I need it (different folder, flash drive, etc.). Now that process takes 5 steps: Duplicate (...don't know where that got saved, maybe next to the old one? Where was that? I used open recent...oh screw it), close the old, rename the new, open finder and search for new name to see where it is, drag to new location, continue editing. Horrible decision. This drove me back to MS office and Adobe.

Typical apple discussion jerk response. The research you requested brings everyone from Google to a 68-page Apple discussion with no "resolved" header. I also "researched" under "File": there is no "Save As". Pushing Option makes a "close all" appear, not "save as", that's why we came here to find an answer. The 8-page rant to which you referred are all of the other ****** off people who don't want to pay for and install a new OS to get the common feature back, and even then it's an option-activated item. Why not remove all menu items and make us press option to see them (like Library under the "Go" menu)?

It is NOT the same Save-As function as there was in the past. So while there is a function called Save-As, it does not do what Save-As used to do. So I think you will find that Dennis is not crazy and not ranting.
