Samsung phone support for isync

Does anyone have any ideas on when Apple will support Samsung phones with isync? Considering there ipod nano uses samsung hardware I would have thought this would be a given.

Hi guys,

I found this discussion when researching my phone options. I've always loved Samsung (phones and otherwise) and really wanted to switch back to a Samsung, but it was also very important that I be able to backup my address book. I eventually decided to take a chance and buy the t509 since I saw one member here who claimed to be able to sync his phone using OnSync and it looked like there were other (more troublesome) options for syncing if that didn't work.

Well, it did. I used the D500 profile (and the "full load" option) as suggested and OnSync worked like a charm. However, I sent a letter to the author and he told me that he had also had at least one report of a t509 not working, so it's possible that the phone software version might be an issue, but that should be fixable if you have trouble.

Just wanted to let you guys know. The jury's still out on the reception and out-going sound quality on this phone, but aside from that the t509 is by far the best phone I've ever used.

"Hi,
I think the following guide (p.s. find the link attached) can help you with your phone:

I don't think this can help. It is like another site I saw that will show you how to change a script for a similar existing supported phone. There are none for Samsung so there is no script to tweak. I'd love to know though if someone did make their own plug in.

I did get the t509 yesterday, my biggest fear was getting all my phone numbers from Address Book to the phone. Turned out dragging and dropping a vCard to the BlueTooth File Exchange wasn't too bad. Dragging the vCards out to a folder has to be one at a time, but I was able to drag all of them in one step to the BlueTooth File Exchange in the dock.

One of the few things that the t809 does not do out of the box is Sync with with a Mac User's Address Book through iSync. Address Book itself can send the phone a vCard, but doing that 1 by 1 is hardly a workaround. After toying around a while, I re-discovered the useful little application "OnSync" from Onmadesoft. Even Onmadesoft wasn't certain it was possible, but, as I'll illustrate below, it's actually quite easy to sync the contacts from Address Book to your t809 using OnSync.

1) Get the Bluetooth settings ready on the t809 (Settings -> Bluetooth -> Turn Bluetooth On -> Select "On" AND Settings -> Bluetooth -> My Visibility -> Select "On").

2) Pair the t809 to your Mac through the Bluetooth Systems Preferance Pane (Bluetooth -> Devices Tab -> Select "Set Up New Device...")

3) Once pair, go grab OnSync ($12 through Kagi, but well worth it - plus, it's the only solution I've found).

4) After you open and register OnSync for the first time, the OnSync preferances will appear (if not, there's a menu option to access them).

5) In the "Mobile Device" tab of the OnSync preferences, choose "Samsung Phone SGH-D500 (and similar models)" for Mobile Type from the drop down list.

6) Next, select "Bluetooth" for the Connection Configuration and click the "Select mobile..." button. The default Bluetooth name for the t809 is "SAMSUNG SGH-T809." (NOTE: Using the "Serial over USB" does not seem to be possible, likely because the TransFlash memory card mounts as an external drive when the phone is plugged in via USB. Unmounting this, while keeping the USB cord plugged in, might solve that, as might disabling the mounting options on the phone.)

7) Click the "Test connection" button in the OnSync Preferances to finish setting up the connectivity with OnSync.

Voila! There are a number of other useful settings in the preferances, but none that will affect connectivity. Once you're done changes other preferances to your liking, save the preferances and the OnSync main window will be visible. Make sure to "Reload Numbers" to see the contacts stored on your phone and in Address Book. Let the syncing begin!

one free way of syncing, though roundabout:

1) create a free account with www.scheduleworld.com
2) sync your SyncML phone with scheduleworld servers for free over your GPRS/EDGE connections (you may be charged by your carrier for data transfer)
3) from scheduleworld servers you can export the addressbook in vCard3.0 versionm, which is importable into Apple Addressbook. You can also use scheduleworld as an LDAP Server with Addressbook and Mail etc. scheduleworld also syncs the phone Calendar, task, to do etc.

i believe you can sync the calendar to iCal easily as well.

this works for me since I keep meeting people and feeding their numbers and details on my phone. my Powerbook is m ostly used as a secure backup.

FAO Adrian Langford, or any one else who can help.

Adrian you said "For me the best address solution is that you can drag vcards from Address Book and the bluetooth them over as a bunch. I don't update the phonebook on mobile that often so this is very practical, and if I really need to add something it's usually just one or two addresses".

This would work perfectly for me as that all I really want, however when I bluetooth my whole address book over, it only shows the mobile number of the first person in my address book?

Did you do anything other than whats stated above?

Thanks

Grant

P.s. If you are a .Mac user you can leave feedback, I requested support for the Samsung D600 and Samsung in general, you may wish to do the same, you never know it may work!!

You may not like the answer I have but it worked for my t509.

Drag the vCards out individually to a folder. Then with the BlueTooth file transfer icon in the dock, select all the cards in the folder, drag and drop on the Bluetooth icon in the dock. It is tedious to do all the cards individually but at least you can bring them all in at once. Plus this is only a 'one-way' solution.
