Pay $29 for upgrade now have to pay for compatible scanner/camera etc

So, I just upgraded to the new Lion OS. Thought it would be a good thing. Now my scanner won't work. Come to find out that I cannot update the drivers to the new Lion OS supported drivers cause they don't exist. My Photoshop won't work either. So, basically I paid a low price for a great upgrade, but now I am going to have to pay even more to get new compatible accessories. Anyone else in this same boat?

I haven't had the CanoScan Toolbox working for a loooong time with my 9950F scanner. But I've been using Preview and Image Capture just fine on my iMac with Lion 10.7. (Wish I had stayed with 10.6!) Don't know why people haven't been able to run Lion with the 9950F. However, I've just 'upgraded' to Mountain Lion 10.8. Thought it was kind of a tweak except for IOS junk thrown in. But, I was wrong, and now the scanner doesn't work.

However, I've been running Quicken with VMWare Fusion with a very old version of XP and thought I'd give XP a try at downloading the XP version of the driver and toolbox. Works pretty well if you're patient for stuff under the covers to do whatever, and after a while the scanner starts up. I now can use the XP version of CanoScan Toolbox for Copy, PDFs, and Save! If you want to scan stuff into an XP folder, you can then just drag the file and dump it in DropBox, Evernote or whatever OSX folder you want.

I also tried sharing the scanner attached to my iMac on the network to my MacBook (white) which can't be upgraded to 10.8 and is stuck at Lion (I REALLY wish I had left it at SL). Then with Preview or Image Capture it looks like it tries to work from the MacBook, but I can't get that to work. Maybe it takes a working host, but it's beyond my limited expertise!

These instructions look great but I am about to upgrade from 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to 10.8 (Mountain Lion) and have a Canoscan 8400F. Canon leads me to believe I cannot use this scanner with Mountain Lion. Rabrack, with your amazing powers do you know if I can do your magic tricks to make the Canoscan 8400F compatible with the new OS? If so, would you mind giving a detailed list of instructions?

Thanks so much.

(Otherwise, what a waste of a very good scanner. Canon is mad. Or greedy. )

Some enouragment! ... I took my Canoscan 8400F throught all the steps rabrack suggested when I upgraded to Lion! It worked perfectly I could do slides again! Then after MtLion it looked like I lost it all! However! After shutting down a few times over the next three days it all "magically" came back!!! I opened CS5 and the export option had Canoscan 8400F listed in the menu options again!!! Yes, it was all back and I did not do the steps over again!!! Hope this is encouraging for those hoping to try it! The Rabrack solution works!

Initially one (not sure which one) of the drivers did not work and a specialist at the Apple store gave me a website for OSX drivers. Here is a site http://www.driverguide.com I checked both Canoscan 4400F and 8400F for OSX and they are listed if you need them!

Good luck!

Hi Alix,

I just checked and they are there! I used the search feature and searched the site for both CanoScan 4400F & 8400F in separate searches and when they come up I scrolled down for Mac OSX and found a number of drivers.

Here are the direct links just scroll down there are Mac drivers listed.

Hope this helps & clarifies.

Well ladies and gentlemen, it is good to know that you have resolved the same problem I have with my 9950F and the recent upgrade to 10.8.2. Rabrack seems to have solved the problem. However, I am evidently a real idiot as I tried using his instructions and UrsOLy's substitution of 9950F for the 8400F but when I opened image capture, no luck. Wonder if UrsOly or Rabrack or someone can give me explicit instructions for the 9950F as for the 8400.

Sorry to be such an idiot. Would really like to get this scanner up and operating.

Sorry, what I meant was Photoshop CS6. I have CS6 and am on Snow Leopard OS 6.8. I also have a Canoscan 8400F.

I will be upgrading to Mountain Lion very soon and just wanted to know whether the workarounds Rabrack and others have come up with to get the 8400F scanner working will work on Mountain Lion and CS6.

If any readers of this discussion have that combination working please let me know! Thanks and happy new year!

Pay $29 for upgrade now have to pay for compatible scanner/camera etc
