MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

Good Afternoon,

About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.

After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.

Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?

Thanks!

I too am having this problem on my mid-2009 MBP.

I never had the problem w/ Leopard or Snow Leopard. It started after my clean install of Lion.

I don't use Safari, I use Chrome. I don't use KAV, I use Sophos. I don't shut my machine down all that often, I simply close the lid. But when I do restart/shutdown, 9 times out of 10, I get the same grey screen with the spinning wheel that everyone here describes.

I have noticed that the longer my maching goes between boots, the more likely the restart/shutdown will hang. If I restart 5 - 10 minutes after another restart, my MBP restarts fine. If I wait a couple of hours or a couple of days, my MBP is certain to hang during the restart/shutdown.

I'm beginning to wonder if I jumped on the Lion too quickly.

Update:

Today, I performed the same test running OpenOffice.org for more than 2 hours w/out using Safari and the result was the same a successful shutdown. This is now pointing even more to Apple Safari as being the culprit. I think by now that the problem is software related. Tomorrow, I will perform the same test only this time I will run Safari for a long time and attempt a shutdown.

@snyded:

I am surprised that your issue is presenting in Chrome however, what you are saying is that a process might be impeding a Mac from shutting down. As far as I know both Chrome and Safari are Webkit browsers and they both also use a sandbox split process model.

Something else, it seems that the longer you run Lion the better the chance of a failed shutdown with the spinning wheel. Maybe the problem is OS driven but is unlikely. Maybe webkit itself is the culprit.

Try this: stop using Chrome and work with Safari for a day and attemp a shutdown if it fails as well it might be webkit.

@RdeF:

You may want to stop using Kapersky it is known to provoke issues like that. Another thing you should do is run MS office for 30 minutes or more and attempt a shutdown. If successful, do the same scenario again. If successful for the second time, go ahead and run Safari and MS Office for more than 30 minutes. If the computer hangs at shutdown it will be pointing straight to Safari.

Anyways I will do the test tomorrow and post back with the results.

Thanks for the update and keep feedback coming.

@vea1083:

Thanks for the suggestions, I will do some more testing later today. Please note that yesterday I updated the AdBlock extension within Safari (to v2.4.23), as that extension appeared to be outdated. After that, I surprisingly did not have any more failed shutdowns (so far; for what it's worth). Even after running MS Office and/or Safari for more than 30 minutes. However, I will continue testing to see whether the failed shutdowns will return and, if so, whether running MS Office and/or Safari for more than 30 minutes seems to trigger failed shutdowns.

As far as Kaspersky Anti-Virus is concerned: I'm still discussing this with the Kaspersky technical helpdesk. At first, they stated that the failed shutdown problem is likely to be OS X 10.7 related (although I had mentioned that for me the problem already occurred under OS X 10.6), but they will continue to work on my case based on more background information to be provided by me.

@vea1083:

#@#$%^! I wasn't able to reproduce the problem last night using Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.

I opened up my MBP and Lion was waiting for me so I started out with a fresh restart (which worked surprisingly). After that, I bounced from browser to browser. I closed them, reopened them, installed extensions, removed extensions, bookmarks, etc. Nothing, not a #@#$%^ thing... every restart worked. Maybe it's another app. During my session last night, I only played with the browsers I didn't run any other apps.

This is a strange one.

Update:

Back to square one... I now think the problem is not Safari, I had the issue again today without using it. I think is an sutbborn OS process that is trying to shut down. What could it be? I think I will be reverting back to Snow Leopard I does not make any sense to run an OS that fails to shut down. As for harware I have done the extended Apple AHT test and nothing came up so my computer is clean.

From @vea1083's link...

"Make sure you've closed all open windows and applications that you may be using. Also, go into System Preferences, General, and remove the check from the box that states: "Restore windows when quitting..." See if that helps.

Also, the first couple of times when shutting Lion down (especially if have open applications or windows) will take longer."

I just unchecked the box myself. I'll post what happens.

According to this teckie revier Lion rather than terminating apps or system processes it asks them to shut down when you quit them. The hanging shutdown could be Lion waiting for an application to terminate.

I already unchecked the "Restore windows when quitting..." box at an earlier stage, after I had read some postings about problems (not specifically the failed shutdown) possibly related to that functionality.

For me, uninstalling Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 for Mac seems to have solved the failed shutdown issue. It may still be too early to be absolutely sure about it, but the last 10 shutdowns (after running MS Office, Safari and other applications; both short and long sessions; no KAV installed) were successful. Now I only have to convince the Kaspersky technical helpdesk that their product is likely to cause failed shutdowns on some Macs...

According to the Kaspersky website:

"The latest version of Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 for Mac, 8.0.6.863, is fully compatible with the Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) operating system. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2011 for Mac versions 8.0.4.746 and 8.0.5.812 are compatible with the Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) operating system only if the "B" or "C" patches are installed."

I don't think they can still claim this compatibility. I've been in constant contact with Kaspersky technical helpdesk, and have informed them in a case about existing threats on the internet re incompatability of KAV 2011 with OS X 10.7 (even with OS X 10.6.x) + my own experiences (failed shutdowns disappeared completely after uninstalling KAV, appeared again after reinstalling KAV, and disappeared again after uninstalling KAV again). At first they seemed not very eager to accept the idea that KAV 2011 may be one of the causes of failed shutdowns, but IMHO they have to accept this by now and do further investigation and fixing.
