MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

Good Afternoon,

About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.

After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.

Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?

Thanks!

2.53GHz Core i5 MacBook Pro 15, Mac OS X (10.7), 500GB HD @7200, 4GB 1067MHz DDR3 RAM, Intel HD + Nvidia 330m 256

@vea1083:

You're trying to jinx me aren't ya. 🙂

Knocking on wood as I type this... since un-checking the box, I have not had a single restart/shutdown issue.

Now I'm anal, I close all my apps before restarts/shutdowns anyway. I've also been un-checking the "Reopen all windows when logging back in" box when restarting/shutting down.

How about you? Any luck with un-checking the box?

Same here... but I will give it a week before marking this as solved. Of course I will call Apple up and let them know that the issue might have its roots with the resume feature.

Hopefully the issue is solved by now (knocking on wood as well)...

Just an update, after 13 days of rigorous testing with the unchecked restore windows option in OSX Lion's System Prefs menu, the issue resurfaced today. Although, unchecking the box has alleviated the problem in some form, it's back to square one. I called Apple Care and they requested more information so that it could be forwarded to Apple Engineering.

Words cannot describe how frustrated I am with this issue, this is by far the worst OS release (in terms of stability) made by Apple since OSX 10.0. As of today, I am seriously considering reverting back to Snow Leopard (as this hanging shutdown problem never occurred under OSX 10.6.X, and most importantly I have run extended Apple Hardware Tests 2 times with no issues being reported with RAM, CPU, Logic Board, and others). I am really hoping that OSX 10.7.2 fixes this issue if not, I will abandon Lion until further notice and stick to Snow Leopard. My message to Apple: "Stop working on iCloud and iOS and focus on fixing Mac OS X".

I too noticed the issue came back when I shutdown on Monday. I haven't touched my MBP since then since I've been using my iPad exclusively. I'll play with the MBP again next week.

Thanks for the update Snyded! I did the 3rd clean reinstall of Lion only this time I updated via softaware update to OSX 10.7.1 immediately after installing iLife. For me 10.7 must redeem itself with OSX 10.7.2 or if not I will regretfully downgrade to Snow Leopard which by all means was a more stable OS than OSX Lion ever was. This issue does not have a clear pattern, although unchecking that box made the problem less frequent. I should note that in the last 24 hours my computer went south after an AppleCare representative instructed me to delete my user application cache. After that action my MacBook and OSX Lion started working very oddly.

I am holding my breath for OSX 10.7.2.

P.S. I really hate that Apple automatically marks my question as solved. This problem is not fixed whatsoever.

I experienced irrregular shutdowns even after Kaspersky was disabled.. It was shutting down properly for a few days, now it is happens irregularly. So it is not Kaspersky (though i have the latest version, i think, 8.0.6.870).

What computer model are you using? MacBook Pro? iMac?...

Do you have other 3rd party software installed other than Kapersky? (i.e. Office, OnyX, etc.)

Sure vea1083, this problem is not fixed whatsoever.

Same problem here... but not with a MBP, I'm using a iMac 27" i7, with a 10.7.1 Lion OS; after many test I was not able to understand the problem. With my MBP instead all is ok for the moment.

I guess I'll downgrade to Leopard, what a pity! 😟

I bought my first Mac a week ago (a MBA 11" - late 2010 model) and being the update freak I am, the first thing I did was to update to Lion. Needless to say, my first experiences with a Mac haven't been exactly what I was hoping...wi-fi problems, connectivity problems with Windows networks (shared folders), slow Office performance and yes...it also started to hang on shutdown after a few days and now it happens almost everytime I use it.

I'm mostly using Outlook, Excel, Chrome, iTunes and Sophos, so I'm guessing it's not a problem with Kaspersky.

Thought I could update you guys on the latest info about this issue. This afternoon I got a lovely email from the engineers at Apple tech support telling me that my issue was being closed and labeled it as a "one time issue" due to lack of information. Really!!! I am freaking aware of that, there's no info neither on the kernel or system log. Guess Apple has more important things to do such as playing with iCloud. I am very disappointed at this issue and how apple is handling it, guess I will start talking with my a Snow Leopard friend about how the king of the jungle breaks the user's system and its creator just looks over and say anything. Does Apple look at these forums a large number of users have complained of the hanging shutdown bug in OSX Lion.

Well that's my update (rant) 😝. I would love to hear if the issue has remained for the other posters in this thread.
