MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

Good Afternoon,

About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.

After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.

Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?

Thanks!

Since uninstalling Kaspersky Anti Virus for Mac 2011 (a couple of weeks ago), the failed shutdown problem did completely disappear and did not re-appear on my MBP. Two weeks ago, Kaspersky was so kind to allow me a full refund. Since then, I purchased and installed another anti-virus app (Intego Virusbarrier) and so far no new problems re failed shutdowns have occurred on my MBP.

Hi guys,

In my case, I reinstalled Lion about 3 weeks ago and I have been using my MBP about one a week there after, so far the issue has not manifested (knocking on wood) since the reinstall. I don't know what step I have done different if any when reinstalling other than installing the 10.7.1 patch and iLife app updates before reinstalling 3rd party software.Maybe it was a goof in 10.7.0 but I don't know. Today, I will use my Mac for a long period of time at my college and see what happens, but honestly I din't pay a premium for an Apple equipment only to have an OS that makes my MBP hang at shutdown.

After reading this blog, I swiched Kapersky Anti-virus off and uninstalled it by going to applications in finder, and moving it to trash. i swich off the computer and it worked. No more hanging when I shut down. I was told that there was no point to me having Kapersky on my MacBook pro by the manager in the Aberdeen apple store anyway. It was deactivated but still switched.

I also got the computer to not restart progammes when switching it off so that too maybe helped.

alright, i'm having this problem and i've had it since installing Lion. I've reset the PRAM and SMC, each a couple times. The only login items I'm using are ScrollReverser and MicrosoftMouseHelper.

any ideas? could a bad PRAM battery be the cause? do Nehalem Mac Pro's have PRAM batteries?

i ask about the PRAM battery because I was trying to copy a 3GB file today to a drive where I know I had 144GB free and it said there wasn't enough space.

thoughts?

Hi everyone. I have a Macbook Pro 2008, 15" screen, aluminum body style.

Since installing Lion, my freakin Macbook now hangs regularly - albeit inconsistently - at shutdown.

Grey screen, little whiz wheel...ad aeternum.

I thought I'd add my voice - to reduce the probability this will just be blown off as a 'isolated problem'.

Respects to all

I have a MBA, running under OS 10.7.3. I had the same issue with not shutting down properly, always having to do a hard powering off.

I finally was able to figure out that the issue is somehow related to wifi. If I turn off wifi, then my MBA will shut down and restart properly. No idea why.

This is a workaround, but not a solution to the problem. If anyone has more info, please post!

Thanks,

Karyn

same problem.

mbp 15".

Had the problem in Snow Leopard, and now, after hoping that installing Lion would by some miracle fix it, I have the same problem in Lion.

I honestly cannot believe that Apple is not responding to this thread at all. This problem is EVERYWHERE on their machines...

No info in verbose boot.

reset VRAM PRAM.. bla bla bla.

Do all of you have stock RAM installed? in my case I upgraded outside the apple store. I was wondering if this might be memory related.

this post should have just said "ditto"

arrrrgh when you pay this much money for a machine and you moved from PC recently, it is REALLY REALLY REALLY very dissapointing.

Update from my side. I had a trial version of kapersky antivirus (long inactive an outdated) installed and found some indications that this might cause the hanging shutdown. Removing KAV by deleting it in the applications folder didn't solve the problem but since I did a proper uninstall by using the provided routine my mac shuts down just fine.
