MacBook Pro did not shut down (hang)...

Good Afternoon,

About 2 days ago I upgraded to Mac OS X Lion (clean install), and I haven't had any major problems so far in term of system freezes or missing user files. However, today when I shuted down my MacBook Pro it went to a white shutdown screen and showed the gray spinwheel. I waited while Mac it shuted down, the problem was that it didn't do so. After 1minute and 30 seconds I decided to hit the power button to force shutdown my Mac. I did experienced this one time in SL. I don't know why this happened and the only thwo things that I did before shutdown was to browse the web in Safari watch Youtube videos and some Facebook and when I proceeded with shutdown all my programs were close and also uncheck the "resume" check box option in the shutdown dialog.

After booting back from that strange shutdown I checked the system logs and theres no reference of a improper shutdown whatsoever. I checked my Library file logs and there was no improper shutdown log either.

Has anyone also experienced this issue in OSX Lion?, also is my Mac OK?

Thanks!

⚠Fixed!

🙂

Uninstalled Kaspersky (downloaded the trail and used the uninstall on the .dmg). I did the uninstall after removing all the Kaspersky files with EasyFind a month ago anyway. I decided to doing the proper uninstall might do the trick, wooop.

Also unchecked the "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" in general system preferences.

I shut down after a 3 day session and a half day session respectively with no problems. Also had a restart after the firmware update which went smoothly aswell.

All good so far... touch wood. 😉

Hi Gang, I too have the same problem, HOWEVER I don't have any Kaspersky software installed.

Any other ideas how to get a fast shutdown again?

Lion 10.7.4

Well, I was able to fix the issue by installing Mac OS X Lion with the latest installer at the time which was 10.7.2. I too did not had Kaspersky installed in my MacBook Pro. In my case, the hanging shutdown issue was present in OS X Lion 10.7 and 10.7.1. When I brought my computer to the Genius Bar one of the reps told me to do a clean install of OS X Lion with the lastest installer from the Mac App Store which is also present when you boot into your Recovery HD with OS X Lion. I just followed his advise, backed up, formatted the HDD, and proceeded to install OS X Lion with the latest installer from the Mac App Store. After completing this process and restoring my apps and files I did not experience a hanging shutdown for the next 6 months. I eventually downgraded to Snow Leopard so I will never know if the procedure that I used was a permanent fix to the hanging shutdown issue I was experiencing.

I do think it is worth the try.

You can learn more about how to reinstall OS X Lion by looking at this link:

That's what I don't understand, I don't have any anti-virus software of any kind installed.

For me, the problem doesn't exist if you only do a clean install and don't import your apps or documents. However no on can live with only the original apps from LION, we need other software.

I am tempted to do a clean install, and RE-INSTALL all my applications and manually import my documents etc....

ANd I don't even know if I can find my Parallels Desktop software/serial numbers, and all the applications/serial numbers that I need like Office for Mac 2008 etc....

Alll of this would require days and days of work, tweaking, and headaches.... 😟

For me, this slow shutdown problem is affecting plenty of people, and is far from being solved.

Since your problem seems to be non existent if you do a clean install, it is very likely that the issue is bein brought by one of your applications. I suggest manually restoring your applications one by one and shutdown your system after you finish installing and using them. Stop when you see that the system shutdown hangs that could narrow down the application that is causing the issue.

Hope this helps!

Have you tried to boot with verbose mode on?
That will show you a boot and shut down screen with everything that is happening "behind the scenes". You could take a photograph of that screen when it hangs in shutdown and that should show which process is not completing/hanging.

I tried it but it didn't tell me what i needed to know, but then my problem was with Kasperspy so you might have better luck.

To enable verbose mode

1. open terminal and type: sudo nvram boot-args="-v"

2. Restart

3. Start up (now you will see the background processes for start up)

4. Shutdown again. Now you will see the shutdown background processes and hopefully the one that is 'hanging'.

5. Take a photo with a digital camera of that screen if you're not sure what it means and post that.

Hope this helps.
