Sometimes while talking on a call, the screen goes black. I can continue the conversation, but can't hang up or access anything on the screen. Tapping on the screen, or the button is uneffective. I just have to wait till it recovers, which can take a minute or two, or turn the phone off. Anybody else experience this?
iPhone 3GS, Mac OS X (10.5.8)
The screen is supposed to go black when held against the face on a call, to stop buttons getting pressed. If it is not coming back quickly when you move it away, it may be that the phone needs a reset or a restore. Some phone cases interfere with the proximity sensor, so if you are using a case, remove and see if it still happens. It could also be a hardware fault, which would mean getting in touch with Apple.
I Had the same problem. Go to settings, cellular data, and turn off voice and data on LTE. Use LTE for data only. Once I did this and the problem has not happened again, that was over a month ago. I'm with Verizon and apparently there is a problem with using LTE for both data and voice. By not using it for voice you only give up the ability to surf the web while on the phone. Not a big deal.
I am with Verizon. But ..... but ..... LTE voice sounds so good! Seriously.
So everyone having this problem is on Verizon? Interesting. Problem is very intermittent on both phones.
We actually do use the web at times while in conversation .... restaurant location, biz addresses, event times, etc so that does affect our usability.
OP and others were using pre-LTE iPhones so am not sure what's up ......

I started having this problem a few days ago and I have also recently enabled voice and data on LTE on my verizon phone. I'm going to try going back to data only and hopefully it will never happen again.
I may have just removed and ruined a perfectly good screen protector for no reason in an attempt to solve this problem. 😟
Hey all, I've had the problem a few times here and there on various iPhone models. Always verizon though.
I never thought much of it though and was going to pass it off as some kind of energy saver when on a call for a while e.g. like a screen saver because the phone always responded when i hit home, and the sensors always seemed to work without problems.
After reading this threat it seems like a more serious issue, even though i personally never have had the phone(s) become completely unresponsive.
This just happened to me again after months of it not happening. No screen or case blocking any of the little holes at the top of the phone. As someone said on another discussion, it doesn't happen when I am on headset, only using the phone itself. Same MO everyone else describes - screen goes blank, can't use keyboard or anything else, can't hang up the phone. After a couple of minutes it will wake up again by pressing the home button, but nothing will make it start again sooner except the hard reboot. Since this has been happening to users since at least the iPhone 4, it seems to be a glitch they don't know how to get rid of.
Perhaps it is a physiological difference in the users experiencing the problem. Our skulls are thicker or something. More brain activity. Who knows.
i am having the same problem. Has happended 3 times now. i have to wait for the other person to hang up........then after 2-3 minuetes it "resets" I was just on the phone with discover and had to do a power/home/voldown reset to get phone back up. WHATS GOING ON!?!?!?!? MY PHONE IS A MONTH OLD MAYBE.....HELP APPLE!?!?!?
| I have a jailed 6+ (128GB) ios 8.1.1. My screen will go black about 50% of the time that I try to access the screen during a call. I've noticed that the phone seems to "know" when I'm calling a company that makes me press numbers in a phone tree. That's when it loves to go black. |

| What's a little different for me than what I've been seeing in this thread is, when the screen goes black I -can- press the lock button. It will hang up the call, but it is the only way I can get control of the phone without having to wait several minutes for the control to come back on its own. |
| I do agree that this is a defect. I also believe that the proximity sensor or camera or what have you that might trigger the black screen can not be a real cause because the home button should access the phone regardless. |
This started happening on my iPhone 6 about a month ago. Never happened before.
For me, it started out of the blue and is random. I could take my phone into an Apple store, but there's no telling when this screen blackout will happen.
When it does, I have to hard-reboot the phone to even get it to hang up. Taking the clear plastic case off doesn't help (same case it's had since I got it). No screen protector or anything else on it. Then, every single time, I have to resort to placing the call again on Skype.
This seems to only happen when I'm on a call that has a computerized 'tree' I have to push numbers to work through (i.e. "press 1 if you know the employee's name, press 2 if you know the employee's department," etc etc).
I see these very long threads about this problem here on Apple's site, but I don't see any solutions or explanations. This makes my iPhone completely un-usable for many calls. NOT the point of having a smartphone.
My stab-in-the-dark guess is that maybe it has something to do with an IOS upgrade they did at some point? I've had my phone for more than 2 years and never had this problem before. Now, all the time.
Anyone have any constructive, useful information about this? Apple staff, please?

What is a hard reboot?
Have you restored as new and tried it?
Take it to an Apple store.
I am having the same problem. Screen goes black out of nowhere when on a call. It happens infrequently with no apparent trigger. Home button and screen do not respond. The only way to get my phone back is with a hard reset. I have an iphone 6 (64GB) phone. Been searching forums and it seems like an unaddressed issue by Apple. Super frustrating!
THANK YOU!!!! I have read every forum and article, and couldn't fix my issue. I have no screen cover, glass is clean, etc. I was about to cry about a broken prox sensor, when I read seeitnow's solution. Turned off the LTE and voila!!! ( Settings--> Cellular--> Enable LTE: turned it off). I tested by calling my house, covering the sensor with finger, and screen went dark; uncovered it, and it lit up. BLESS YOU for taking the time to post your solution.
Happens to one of our phones too. We have two identical iPhone 6 phones, one does it, one doesn't. The one with the problem was taken into an Apple Store after extensive discussions with Apple Support beforehand, and they claimed it was a faulty SIM card. So we now have a brand new SIM card from a different telco and the problem continues to occur.
Have cleaned the area around the sensors at the top and it makes no difference.
Any other suggestions welcome. Otherwise I'll brace myself to talk to Apple about it again and see if they can replace it this time.

After complaining and having my original iPhone 6 Plus replaced by Verizon.. twice, and taking it to the Apple store multiple times (the store clerks however seem rather useless, only offering to restart/restore the phone), I am on my third iPhone 6 Plus with the same problem, across multiple ios versions.
Clearly there is an issue.
Some attention to the problem from Apple is needed.
This started happening on my iPhone 6 roughly 6 months after I bought it.
I've done every "fix" they say to do, but it keeps happening. Completely randomly.
I took it into an Apple store, but of course I can't predict when it's going to happen, so I can sit in the Apple store with it for an hour and have someone call me and it doesn't happen.
There is something wrong with either the hardware or the software. I would like my phone replaced.
I just had it happen, for the zillionth time. Cannot do a hard reboot when it's happening as the phone becomes completely non-responsive.
Anyone have any constructive, useful information about this? Apple staff, any real information to give about this? None of your "fixes" work beyond a day.
I also had this problem on my iPhone 6, just a few minutes ago. Really frustrating. I was on a call with technical support with SiriusXM, and the poor customer service agent -- who probably is not allowed to hang up on a caller first when a session is over -- couldn't get rid of me because I couldn't end the call from my end (completely black screen). I had to tell her "yes, I'm satisfied! You fixed my problem; now I have a new one, but it's with my phone". She probably thought I was a complete Luddite. Finally, once I convinced her to hang up on me, the screen magically came back to life. Very frustrating. I'm with T-Mobile.
