DON'T UPDATE TO LION!

I couldn't be more unsatisfied with OS X Lion. First, problems with Safari (and sometimes I got to restart because it has some problem with Youtube), problems with Finder, my network it's completely deconfigured in comparation with my old Snow Leopard, and now the sound has gone with NO reasons. I hear the sound of the volume going up and down, but can't play Youtube and even iTunes! With all the respect, I thought Apple was different from Microsoft, but now that become this big, feels like thinks the same way.

DO NOT UPDATE TO LION! Don't waste your money with a software that have a lot of issues to get fixed.

To CT,

Read my complaints again. They have been confirmed after spending two hours on the phone with tech support and submitting PMRs. If you found some way to fix my concerns instead of calling me ignorant please enlighten me. Thanks

Csound, I like efficiency when I am on the computer. I found that sometimes after it is shut down that it lags on start up and a few other blips that come and go, but other than that it works properly. I simply don't like that they took options, that I use everyday, away. So if you like it enjoy. I am almost sure it will not "crash."

Stephan, Thanks for your professionalism and your help. I know that I can go back to my latest install from Snow Leopard. I did a back up before I went to an 8 day seminar where lots of information was exchanged through thumb drives. That was only a few weeks ago so it should be an easy but time consuming manual transfer of the latest information I just downloaded. It will just take more time.

It is my fault for jumping into Lion so fast. I had ultimate faith in Apple software. Lesson learned.

Capaho,

please explain a couple things to me.

1. If your install didn't go wrong, why are you having troubles?

2. How was my response to you offensive? I simply clarified ahead of time that I wasn't trying to attack you since it is impossible to convery sincere, condescending, or even genuinely helpful tones over text. I didn't ever say you were dumb or that the problems you are having are your fault. But you are claiming that an entire OS (that MANY people have had great success with) is to blame for your problems?

I guess if your install went right and Lion is the piece you say it is, then I should uninstall my OS and revert to SL, right? But perhaps I am not comprehending what I read right...

1. Perhaps it is a matter of understanding the terminoloy. People are using the terms "install" and "installation" in a manner that refers to the installation process, at least to those of us who are in the IT business. The installation process went smoothly on the three Macs that I upgraded. The performance and stability issues that I'm seeing are a result of the actual operation of the OS itself and have nothing to do with the installation process. There are clearly some compatiblity issues between Lion and some Mac models that are desperately in need of bug-fix updates from Apple. The Mac mini, in particular, is a case in point.

2. Regardless of how you preferenced it, your comment, "Again, I really want to make this clear, I am not calling you stupid or attacking you because your install didn't go right I am just pointing out the unlikely-ness of your claim," implies that I don't understand what I'm doing. I'm very clear on what I'm seeing on the Macs that I upgraded. There are noticeable degradations in performance in some areas on all of them, and there is no doubt on the Mac mini when the video is blanked or it has crashed outright. Those problems never occured under Snow Leopard.

You and a few others here are too quick to lay blame on the people who are reporting problems. Look at the rate at which this forum is accumulating new threads reporting various problems with Lion. Are you going to dismiss all of them simply because they differ from your own experiences? Are you so arrogant that you believe you know more about the experiences someone else is havng with their own computer than they do?

Jean,

You are so right. I understand that this is a "first world" problem. Thanks for the humbling thought.

CT, I am jealous that you can go back in Finder with a swipe of some fingers. I can not no matter how I set up the gesture options. In fact the tech guy confirmed my suspicions when I asked. I asked if I can use the finger swipe to go back in finder. He said, "they took that option away." I don't know what you did or how you did it maybe it was left over from Snow Leopard but congrats.

Woof... this is some big exchange. I only clicked on it because of the all-caps name of the thread. It's funny, in many years of posting on these forums... I've only raised enough ire to get my post taken down once, and it was for saying exactly the same thing ("don't update...etc."), but about iPhoto (which has what seems like some missing elements, imho).

So I'm here because I'm surprised the original post behind this warning is still up... just wanted to see what it was. And now that I have, may I weigh in, Kissinger-style?

I am, full disclosure, a big fan of Apple products. We've owned just about every iteration of whatever they've introduced, except perhaps the Lisa in the early '80s and the Newton (okay, we gave a lot the pass during the Sculley era). Plus just about every hardware and software update since. I even own shares and was once asked to write sales copy for them (I turned it down because my plate is already too full).

So, though I hate the term "fanboy," you could probably accuse me of being one and I'd have a hard time defending against the charge.

That said, I've installed Lion and had exactly the same wifi drops. While I don't know if the number of other users out there with the problem is "50" or "millions" -- possibly somewhere in-between -- I'll bet it's not too risky to say that many others have experienced the trouble too. For that reason, I've been trying to spread the word on a very simple 'fix' that temporarily alleviates the problem, involving a repeat 'ping' sent via Terminal (you can search for it, it's everywhere by now).

I think it's also safe to say, too, that Apple is aware of and working to fix the problem. I'm not trying to give them a pass for releasing a flawed OS. Just saying, early bugs are not unprecedented. I doubt there's any operating system that's ever been released without one. That doesn't mean getting mad about it is unjustified... dropped wifi is a pretty annoying bug... just that it makes sense to keep some perspective on these things, yes?

As for the warning not to install, I'd just say that maybe it's worth taking a wider poll before coming to that conclusion. You might very well want to wait... and I'm guessing you won't have to wait long for a cleaner, updated version... but, in just one user's opinion (mine), once the wifi temporary 'fix' is in place (the 'ping' thing I mentioned), Lion turns out to be -- again, my opinion here -- a very nice operating system.

It's fast and I love some of the new features. What I don't love, like the scrolling, I was able to change back to what I like. Ideally, one would check out Lion on a friend's machine or at the Apple Store, and if you agree... find the fix in the forums and go ahead and install.

Like I said, I had the problem with wifi before... now I don't... and I'm glad to have Lion up and running.

Just one guy's opinion.

If the start up lag bothers you why don't you stop shutting down and just close the lid until you need your computer again?

All my installations are as fast or faster than they were on 10.6.8

I'm glad I updated.

Two installs, on MBP and iMac, both relatively speedy (or as speedy as a system upgrade can be). The new features vary: some I don't use, but others I use every session. On my systems, I noticed no wifi dropouts, no performance loss, same speed as before. I even have a pretty good idea what caused the "problems" noted by some users, but tha'ts neither here nor there. The only thing missing was some kind of PDF guide to explain the major features and their use.

This may or may not be relevant but since turning on hd encryption I am experiencing wifi "timeout" issues. Previous to that I had no problems at all under different wifi scenarios. I wonder for those here experiencing wifi timeout issues, do you have encryption on?

Turn encryption off and the "issue" clears up from what I can tell.

Perhaps this has already been addressed somewhere else?

How about you Motionstill?
