Mail stops responding to mouse clicks in Lion

Since installing Mac OS 10.7 Lion, I am experiencing an intermittent problem in Mail. After running for a period of time (I have noticed this as short as ~15 minutes after launch, but usually 2-3 hours), Mail stops responding to mouse clicks in its window. I have noticed the following conditions:

- Mail gets stuck on whatever message was being displayed. Clicks on other messages in the message list or other mailboxes are not reconized. It is impossible to change focus on mail items with the mouse.

- Mouse clicks on the toolbar buttons or the buttons in the new capsule between the message headers and message body are not recognized.

- Mouse focus is recognized: e.g., moving mouse pointer over message headers or the capsule buttons will cause them to highlight or change color, but clicking has no effect.

- Keyboard still works, so pressing up or down arrow will bring up the next message in the message list and the preview pane changes to display the new message.

- Keyboard still works to activate Mail commands, i.e., all command key combos still work. Delete key will delete the selected message.

- Mouse still works for the menubar and menu commands. In full screen mode, moving the mouse to the top of the screen displays the menu, and all menus can be clicked on, activated, and selected. All menu commands work properly.

- If in full-screen mode, clicking on the full-screen toggle button in the top-right of window will return Mail to windowed-mode, but clicking on the same button while in windowed-mode will not return Mail to full-screen mode; the click is ignored.

- Quitting Mail and restarting makes the problem go away.

This happens on both my machines that have Lion:

1. Late 2007 21" iMac, 4GB RAM

2. Mid 2009 15" MacBook Pro, 8GB RAM

For all the above, you can substitute trackpad for mouse. The iMac uses Magic Mouse and the MacBook Pro uses either built-in trackpad or Magic Trackpad. The problems above happen with all pointing devices.

In my usual Mail setup I have 7 Mail Bundles active, but I have removed all Mail Bundles and the problem still occurs. For reference, the 7 Mail Bundles usually installed are:

Attachment Tamer.mailbundle

MailActOn.mailbundle

MailFollowUp.mailbundle

MailRecent.mailbundle

MailTags.mailbundle

DEVONMailConduit-SnowLeopard.mailbundle

OmniMailMessageServiceEnabler.mailbundle

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Does anyone have any ideas on possible cause or suggestions to resolve?

Thank you,

Drew

Re: Why does my cursor keep disappearing?

May 9, 2013 4:44 PM

It is Thursday 09 May 2013 and I hate to bump an 'old' post but this is the second one that came up when searching on this problem. I am using Mac OS 10.8.3 on a MacBook Pro with Firefox 20 and this cursor disappearing problem (actually it's the pointer that is randomly disappearing) started yesterday.

Since the OS and software info in this thread are not what I'm using (or in the case of virus software are not installed), and since I am unfamiliar with using the mac console, the only way I was even able to ask for help here was to force my computer to restart (you know, the did you try turning it off and back on again solution).

SoooOOOOooo, is there a known new issue between Mac OS 10.8.3 and Firefox 20 ??

I went through the 5 pages of responses and looking at system preferences and mail preferences etc, and I am using 'classic mode' for mail, have no applications launching that should not be, have no virus or other applications listed installed, and I don't know how to use the console to make manual changes.

I can say that the problem might have started when I decided to configure Mail to use to avoid Yahoo's interface, which makes me think it's the 'switching between applications' (mail and firefox) or the full screen mode problems referenced.... but I really don't know.

I just need to fix it so I can see my pointer all the time.

PS: in the old John Hodgman (PC) // Justin Long (Mac) advertising campaign says that Macs don't have drivers or virus' to worry about. Did they lie to me?

No really, I need to fix this thing. Thank you in advance,

Christine, the problem I had disappeared after the OS was updated and a new version of Mail was released. I also had problems with early versions of Spotify causing the problem.

I installed a little utility called Mouse Locator which helped enormously. I set a hot key in the Prefs panel for this software and when my mouse disappeared, I would press that combination and the mouse would reappear. I still use it to keep track of the cursor if it gets lost on the screen.

In addition, I no longer use Firefox as it was crashing way too often. I now use Chrome, and while it isn't perfect, it's very stable, and I can now browse for hours without any instability.

Sorry I can't be of more help! Good luck.

Actually this is very helpful, thank you.

I will install that application.

I checked the version of Mail I have and Apple's update page says it's the most current version.

I'm considering switching to Safari from Firefox but I don't know if I will be able to view the sports streams I usually view -- I'll have to test that first before committing. I've never tried Chrome.

My finding: a Remote Desktop session from another computer CAN control Mail and Mail WILL react to mouse clicks.

RD interaction does not restore the Mail.app mouse functioning on the RD controlled computer.

Yosemite, 10.10.3 and the problem still persists. Only Mail. Mighty mouse on a mac mini.

Maybe this narrows it down a bit and Apple can resolve the issue after 6 years.
