"New Message" Sound Not Playing In Mail 5

Since I have upgraded to OS X Lion and Mail 5, I have noticed that the "new message" sound is not playing when I receive a new email. I have checked the settings, and the option for this is enabled. I am using Gmail and have the "idle command" option enabled, and I suspect that this may be involved in the issue.

I have read that in the past Mail had an issue where it would only play the "new message" sound if it had received the new message by polling the server. If the new message was received through the "idle" command, then the "new message" sound would not be played. Perhaps this is the same bug.

Is anyone else having this issue? I know I could just turn off the "idle" command, but I'm looking for an actual fix to the underlying issue. I've reported it to Apple, but I would like to see if anyone else has noticed this.

Dear Chaz:

just to let you know, when i did what you mentioned here (audio midi setup, then built in output, then down arrow next to format, then "change to something else, and change back to original", i didn't get any sound coming out at all...when i clicked on "configure speakers", i was able to get sound by clicking on either speaker 1 or 2, but got no sound coming out when i changed the setting next to format, as you suggested. could it be because my sound thing is working ok right now, or should you always get sound when you do as you mentioned? i hope not, cuz i didn't! lol!

thanks!

You'll only get sounds coming out if there are unplayed sounds queued up—i.e. if everything is working OK, the Audio MIDI Setup change will have no apparent effect.

If it happens again some time that your Mail sounds stop playing, do the Audio MIDI Setup thing and you will then hear any queued sounds play, and sound playing will have been 'reset'. Everything will then again be fine for some period of time, although the period is quite variable. I've had things stop only 24 hours after resetting, but other times I've gone for weeks without a problem.

I too put this in the 'solved' tray, and just have Audio MIDI Setup in my dock, always open, and hidden. When I have to do a reset, I just call it up, change the setting (I never bother to change it back as such, I just toggle it between the first an last settings in the list, each time I do a reset—I obviously don't do anything else with my Mac that's impacted by this), and hide it again.

A bit of a pain—actually, the bigger pain is when iCal alerts stop sounding, because I depend on them—but I've got too many other things to do with my life to worry any more about this particular problem. I figured that it would probably get fixed in a later release, as appears to have been the case.

Dear Peter:

oh, okay! i guess that's why i didn't hear anything then, because for now, my sounds are working! don't know if you saw my earlier post re: what the genius bar tech told me it was, and how he told me to fix it, but he said it was due to the "permissions" having to be reset, and i may have to do it again, from time to time. that fixed my sounds, and they seem to be working now...it was thru utilities, then disk utilities, then macintosh hd, then reset permissions....

maybe they both work, or maybe we had lost sound for different reasons...well, in any case, i wrote down what he said to do to fix it, and i also wrote down what you and Chaz said too about the audio midi, so i will just try either/or, both, if it happens again! hopefully, when i finally get the new program, it won't do it anymore!

thanks!
