Unable to start services in Lion Server

Hi,

I recently installed Lion Server on my iMac.

The only two services that will run are:

File Sharing and Time Machine.

Many others, like Wiki, Web and Profile Manager show "Error Reading Settings" in Server.app

Address Book and Calendar always just show "Off"

I can't start any of these services.

In /var/log/system.log, I can see:

Aug 8 15:44:26 imac org.postgresql.postgres[2452]: 2011-08-08 15:44:26 MDT FATAL: could not create log file "/Library/Logs/PostgreSQL.log": Permission denied

But, I'm not sure who is the owner of the controlling process so that I can make any permission changes.

I did run a Fix Permissions on the disk but this did not help.

And when I try specifically to start Calendar or Address Book, the same log shows:

Aug 8 15:47:53 imac servermgrd[103]: xswebconfig failed: Exception:

undefined method `settings' for nil:NilClass

Aug 8 15:47:53 imac servermgrd[103]: servermgr_web: XSWebConfig read failed; detail:Error Domain=XSServerFoundationErrorDomain Code=4 "Failed to read settings: Exception:

undefined method `settings' for nil:NilClass

." UserInfo=0x7faf33c03b50 {NSLocalizedDescription=Failed to read settings: Exception:

undefined method `settings' for nil:NilClass

.}

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had to manually set permissions for /Library/Logs to make them permissive (used sudo chmod 777 /Library/Logs while testing). Using "repair permissions" screws up permissions for me, causing things to stop working. However, even though this enables Postgres to start, it's only a temporary fix and needs to be repeated (at least for me every day). While inconvenient, most of the UI in the Server.app now works for me, although the services themselves are not working properly (e.g. wiki-based calendar, password setting, etc. don't work). I guess we need to wait for an update from Apple, but hopefully this will help you to get a little further.

I have also had the 'Error reading settings' problem in Profile Manager, despite trying everything in the discussions and clean reinstalls (which work for a little while only).

It seems that various different fixes work for some people but not others; and the underlying cause of the problem has not been resolved.

There are now numerous threads on this problem (there are yet others with similar problems):

I have posted this in each to try and pull things together a bit.

Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged the issue and offered an official response?
