If no screen savers work, or work eratically, do this :
I notice in the same folder there are .plist files for your options for each screensaver.
You may want to delete this too if you are still having issues

Not too sure what this may have fixed for you but it made no difference to me, in fact this webpage doesn't seem to reflect the problems that all of us are having. It's not that the saver isn't working at all, it's that it launches but there is no content shown.
To reconfirm, this was working after the upgrade to Lion and has suddenly stopped working for the users of this thread, ergo there must be a common change happened either at local or server level, my money's on the latter.
I'd be interested to know if anyone else has positive or negative feedback after trying above.

Same thing here. Word of the Day worked with Lion until a few days ago. What happened? How can I get it back on my iMac? I love it!!!

mine is also not working, but was a few days ago. I installed Lion a couple of days after the release.
Hmmm...
That's kind of funny that apple wants to say its not supported in Lion, because it is installed by Lion by default.
During my original attempt to upgrade from Snow Leopard to Lion, my hard drive failed. Thankfully the very first thing I did before I had started the upgrade was make a bootable SDcard installer of Lion.
So I took the opportunity to order an SSD to replace the dead drive, and did a completely clean install of Lion, and sure enough Word of the Day screensaver is installed by default. And then just a few days ago, it randomly stopped working for me, just like everyone else is reporting.
Word of the Day was my favorite screensaver. Using a late 2008 iMac. Just upgraded it to OS X Lion. After the upgrade, Word of the Day stopped working. Now I just get a blank black screen instead of the "Word of the Day." All of the other Mac Screensavers seem to be working fine. But "Word of the Day" is borked. Hoping it'll be fixed. 😠
I just downloaded Lion yesterday, had a successful install, and Word of The Day stopped working immediately. Glad I checked in with the Community. Anybody know if the problem is being worked on? Hello, Apple, you there?
I'm having the same issue. I just got a new Macbook Pro with Lion installed and every other screensaver works except for WOTD. When it starts up, the screen is black and the actual screensaver doesn't show up..
I originally reported this on 8/8/2011, when I believe WOTD stopped working. As others have indicated, the screen saver worked fine for weeks after upgrading to Lion--then suddenly stopped. I was hoping 10.7.1 would include a fix, but unfortunately it does not. I do wish Apple would address this, one way or the other.
It wouldn't surprise me if something changed at dictionary.com to break this, which Apple now have to match to
Word of the day screesaver does not work on a new MBA with Lion pre-installed.
Same problem here. I just got a new MacBook Pro with OS X Lion and "Word of the day" screensaver does not work. Any chance this is getting repaired soon?
same issue here. changing the dictionary source also does nothing.
This is obviously broken. You can go directly to the "Word of the Day.qtz" file in System-->Library-->Screen Savers and at least the background renders correctly. So it not simply a problem of connecting to the internet.
same here! Ever since upgrading to OSX Lion 10.7.0 or 10.7.1 WOTD is not working anymore! Apple is getting sloppy. Reminds me somehow of M$
I did a little digging on this, and from what I can tell WOTD does not regularly dial out to get its words. If you're curious to look at the word list, go to /System/Library/Graphics/Quartz Composer Plug-Ins. Control-click (right-click) on WOTD.plugin and choose Show Package Contents. In that window go to /Contents/Resources and open NOAD_wotd_list.txt. There are all your words!
I was even able to get it somewhat working by replacing the WOTD.plugin with the same file from OS 10.6.8. Unfortunately that doesn't completely work, because it doesn't display the definitions, which is pretty much the whole point!
I'm thinking it must be an issue with the plugin communicating with Dictionary.app
