About the little scrollbar arrows...

...is there any way to get these back in Mac OS X Lion? Or do I need to downgrade to Snow Leopard just get these seemingly trivial but for me necessary things back?

Lion as a whole is a fine thing but this particular problem doesn't swing with me. Apple could just as well have left the option in the Preferences and I have no idea why they decided to remove it altogether. Not very intuitive IMO.

I work as a graphic designer and use Photoshop every day. Many files contains hundreds of layers and I really need fine control over the layers- list. Without the arrows things have increasingly become horrible, it seriously messes up my workflow. Yes, I can use the trackpad but that isn't the optimal solution for me since I use a Wacom tablet. Every time I need to bump up a few layers I automatically use the tool I have in my hand, i.e mouse or pen and it's really hard to pinpoint a specific layer many times. It's extremely annoying so I wonder if anyone know how or if there's a possibility of getting the arrows back?

Good grief! Give it up, already!!

  • This is a user-to-user forum. Apple does NOT live here and does not give a rat's rear end to what's written here.
  • Scroll bars went away three OS X versions ago. Probability of their resurrection are less than that of refloating the Titanic.
  • This thread first appeared in 2011, focused on a dead subject. That has not changed since then. User uploaded file

How so? Since Lion doesn't have them, they can hardly be annoying you. Seems like your post was only intended to annoy others who'd like the OPTION to turn them back on.

And by way of comparison, on the LEFT we have the advanced feature-rich sidebar menu from Snow Leopard, with usability aids such as COLOUR, SCROLLBARS and SCROLLBAR ARROWS...

on the right we have the degraded feature-poor sidebar menu from Lion, with poor visibility and reduced usability. You can say you prefer Lion if you want, but for me the more advanced GUI is clearly Snow Leopard's.

Indeed, my guess is if you asked anyone completey unfamiliar with Mac OS which of these, the left or the right, was a screenshot from the latest upgrade, they would all pick the one on the left. The one on the right looks like something from 1999. 😟

[**nb. for the sake of accuracy, and before the pedants kick in, the green highlighting on the left is not part of the SL window, but was added to highlight the apps folder for a query in a different thread.]

path finder is a great app, don't get me wrong but it is sadly more expensive than mac OS Lion alone! :-)

the lack of scroll arrows is simply dumbfounding , along with a few more quirks and removal of features within Lion, I really am surprised that functions are removed from a modern operating system

I can only assume that sometime somewhere Apple will realize their mistake, it will take many people complaining over many months so keep the posts coming and provide feedback to Apple via the "provide feedback" menu item in most apple apps (apart from the finder doh)

infuriating but at the end of the day you can either go to windoze or become a linux nerd, there really are no other sensible options :-)

Ah! that makes a lot of sense, Pete! Thank you for confirming my conspiracy theories...haha!

So then what you're saying is you don't really have a solution to this problem but you just defend Apple computers so you can maintain your belief in a just world, eh?

I guess my stating my opinion on a public forum would be a major annoyance for you. Which explains your attempt to discredit the legitimate gripe expressed in my original comment. I like your sense of humor though. Opening the doors to the truth by using exaggeration to soften the blow is one good way to facilitate change.

So anyway, can I score a dime bag of those scroll bar arrows dude? I got cash. Meet me under the bridge at midnight and put 'em in a plain brown bag. Come alone or I keep driving!

I am in full agreement and I am glad to see others mentioning this on the Apple Support Forums.

May I suggest that everyone file a report with Apple Feedback.

Here is the address:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

We need as many people as possible to send suggestions to Apple.

Also you may want to email Tim Cook.

It seems to me that Apple forgot that people actually use computers for real work not just for reading email and browsing websites.

Ra1n5had0w,

you did not specify exactly what other problems you are experiencing, but this TinkerTool utility provides for many options in Snow Leopard and Lion. No arrows in Lion, though.

If Apple can give us the option to hide or display the scroll bars, is there a good reason that they can't give us the option to hide or display the scroll bar arrows?

That is something only they can tell us or address (or not) in a future update. Or you can tell them your concerns at

Apple is unlikely to respond here...you're better off sending a message here:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

One of the earlier posters in this thread mentioned actually getting a response from Apple when posting in the "Universal Access / Accessibility" feedback area.

And, if your computer is still under warranty or you don't mind paying for a support call, it couldn't hurt to call them up and yell at them too...maybe if enough people do that it will register with them.

Unfortunately these comments seem to be falling on deaf ears.

As an architect I too have lamented the demise of the scroll bar ARROWS which I need for navigating around an A1 drawing and a wheel mouse just does not cut it for accuracy.

Sadly the Apple company that introduced me to OS6 many many moons ago, the one that loved its userbase and lavished attention on the desires of their converts is long, long gone. That ethic seems to have passed away with Steve Jobs.

The company seems now to delight in major blunders and then ignores them Government Department style, not only with this issue on the scroll bar arrows but also on the iPhone Maps App. Here in Australia they have seriously led people looking for a major country town, Mildura, 70km into the middle of a waterless desert.

What about it Apple? Slow down the plethora of innovations and get back to caring for your userbase and get back to quality controlling your software.

I have used the complaint line 3 months ago to no avail.

Is it about time for a co-ordinated user e-mail campaign?

I would not like your chances of having them brought back just for you. They have been gone for a long time now. So it's either back to Snow Leopard or learn to live without them like millions of others have. I've forgotten what they look like and use Adobe CS6 and Logic Pro etc. without a hiccup.

Good Luck

I have fired up my old G3 PPC mirror door Mac Pro to work on my Quicken files referee databases and other large files that need easy line by line viewing (either for comparison or for ease of finding information). For large graphic files (120+ MB) I am kind of stuck with my newer iMac as the processor speed is better on the iMac. I only went to the newer Mac OS because Apple stopped supporting MobileMe and stopped the calendar and contact syncing with the older PPD computers (I won't go into my feelings about that here).

My wife IS handycaped. For her there is no way for her to be able to grab the slider in the scroll bar and move it to where she needs it. Especially with the trackpad. She uses a MacBook Pro. I have limited her access to applocations and have modified the Dock and other functions to help her out. A wireless mouse really helps her. But, the Magic Mouse is beyond her. To find what she wants she has to use the mouse's scroll wheel to move through a document or web page to find what she wants. This works poorly.

personally I see the dropping of the scroll arrows an attack on the pro/power user

the sort of user that has documents that are 100s if not thousands of pages long

that has folders and subfolders containing 100,000s of files etc

that use macs professionally day in day out, some (like me) since the 1980s

apple appear to be trying to turn the OS into a kiddy simplified version suitable for about 80% of users

Pretty much any removal of functions is a bad thing, and the scroll arrows are just one of a few features apple has dumped, and i can't think of many that have been added which has aided productivity

I use a large graphics tablet daily, along with a magic trackpad, and logitech mouse. I used to be able to pretty much use the tablet all the time but the scroll arrows issue amongst others has now forced me to to use alternative inputs...

being forced into using something else is pretty annoying and unnecesary

i'd say that mountain lion is actually more difficult to use than previous versions, and thats not something for apple to be proud of

i doubt if the interface designers actually use it year on year every day, and the decision makers probbaly just read emails and drink coffee

I'd also say that the gui designers are probbaly youg and have good or well corrected viksion, as the OS has been getting worse for people with ageing eyesight, with the removal of colour as visual cues in the finder as an example

anyway pete don't get shirty cos people are frustrated, its quite rude and annoying really :-)

I've been using Apple products for 30+ years.

I too have large documents that need precise editing tools.

I don't feel that I should have to buy more gear in order to use software that Apple has reduced the functionality of, that's product hard-sell Apple.

So, scroll arrows, hand tool in Preview and options to colour customise folders in the finder window and elsewhere, bring them back.
