Updated Printer Drivers Not Installing - Brother HL-2170W

I have a Brother HL-2170W... and apparently, about a week ago, an update came out for the printer.

Which of course meant that OS-X just HAD to have that update, or the printer wouldn't work. Despite its working just fine on Lion before the update.

The only trouble is that it can't seem to FIND the update on Apple's site.

I uninstalled the printer and tried to reinstall it, and this is the message I keep getting when I try to reinstall the printer by letting Apple download the software:

"The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software."

The software is, of course, quite available right here:

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL894

I downloaded and installed the package, and it still insists on searching for the drivers on the internet and not finding them, and there are absolutely NO instructions on the update package site on how to install the printer manually.

So right now, I have a gigantic 30-pound paperweight with a $60 toner cartridge inside.

Please help.

I had this same problem with a Samsung 2525w. I went through the process of using the network setup, and I was invited by the software to go ahead and + add the printer.

I went in to the System Preferences, added the printer and I got the same message, "not currently available from the Software Update server."

To solve the issue, I clicked + add and rather than clicking on the printer out of the "Nearby Printers" list, I clicked "Add other printer or scanner."

From this area, you can select the same printer that is also listed in "nearby printers", in my case it was a networked Samsung 2525w. From the same screen you then MANUALLY select the printer driver.

In review:

1. Go to Apple's software area for drivers and download the latest update:

For Samsung, it's here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL905

2. Click + Add Printer

3. Click "Add other printer or scanner."

4. Select your driver from "Print Using" dropdown.

5. Add

This worked for me and it bypassed the whole "Download the software from apple" ordeal.

The trick is sometimes figuring out the terminology! I came from a heavy PC background and once you figure out the MAC language, you're set - thanks for helping me figure out that "reset printer system" is the only means of deleting the old printer, I was so lost for much too long trying to install my new printer this morning, jeez!

The HL-2270 is having the same problem. The "Can't install the software for the Brother HL-2170W series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server" message would appear every time I tried to set up the printer. While watching the download, I noticed that a software update would download completely and then, for some reason, cycle through and try the download again. On the second download attempt the " Software not currently available from the Software Update server" message would appear. After hours of frustration and reading through how others addressed the problem without success, I tried the following: I watched carefully as the download bar progressed, the second the initial download was complete, before it had time to cycle, I hit cancel. To my amazement, it worked! The 2270 now prints.
