Apple Mail Cut & Paste Problem...

I have a problem with Apple Mail when I cut some text and paste it somewhere else within the message it doesn't go in where the cursor is located! Instead it pastes into what appears to be a random place elsewhere in the message usually at the start of the line or paragraph.

It's really strange and completely unfathomable. The only solution I've found is to put in a couple of returns paste it in to the message then move the cursor up and delete the newly added line breaks.

I thought it might be a font issue so I changed my default font from Arial to Trebuchet and it's still doing it. This doesn't appear to happen in any other application.

This is not exclusive to Snow Leopard as it does it on my Mac at home which is running Lion.

Any advice gratefully received.

Hi David,

I submitted a bug report via: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Have not yet received a reply.

Might be helpful if more of us submitted reports, certainly couldn't hurt.

I briefly described the issue and referenced this tread.

As an FYI, pasting using Cmd-Opt-Shift-v (instead of the customary Cmd-v) bypasses the issue for me, but shouldn't be necessary. I'm sure it will be fixed at some point... hope it's soon.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences, and hang in there!

I also have had this problem since this summer.

Thanks for all the feedback.

So far the "paste and match style" seems to work most of the time (some times it goes waky too).

I submitted a bug report via: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html and I included this forum's URL in my comments.

The more people who submit bug reports the more likely they will actually do something about it.

hi, thanks Matthew Gillard!, I'm not at your level of tech but i do appreciate what you've found... i then searched the forum for Webkit and found other references to this Webkit thing, see an example, April, 2008

i logged an incident with Apple online a few weeks ago because Apple told me that Apple Engineering definitely looks at those issues ... see

http://www.apple.com/feedback/

scroll down and see OS X Apps ... surprisingly MAIL is not shown so i lclicked the MAC OS X category. On that screen MAIL is included in a Feedback Area drop down list and i logged my observations and request to fix this

Please, everyone, do the same plus whatever other techniques you have....

I'm an individual consultant to corporations and increasingly finding MACs being used. I've also heard Apple is beefing up Corporate sales staff to boost sales to corporations to displace Windows ...

They certainly have to fix this... haven't they noticed it themselves?

THanks for your help! Harold

Hi All,

Long time Mac User in grief counseling over this ridiculous issue!

Just thought I'd pass along the latest article from MacWorld about Apple's degrading customer service! Following is the link:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1168178/apples_retail_focus_should_be_on_custome rs_not_cash.html#lsrc.nl_mwweek_h_cbstories

I made a comment on there as follows; AND, WOULD ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GO THERE AND MAKE A SIMILAR COMMENT!!!!

Comment on MacWorld's article:

"Yes, I ...... actually WE, have a comment about Apple putting their customers first ...... NOT!

I would hopefully bring to MACWORLD's attention the following string on Apple's Support Communities web site regarding a LONG-TIME, UNANSWERED issue with the Mail Program. The web page is: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3271179?tstart=0

While this is not directly related to this Apple Store article regarding customer service, there have been several on this string that HAVE gone to the Apple Store to try to resolve the issue, but to no avail - being told that "someone will look at it" and NOTHING being done.

I am HOPING, beyond hope, that perhaps someone from MacWorld will take up this issue and bring it to the forefront, for at least a moment, and perhaps getting Apple's attention. It is an insidious and unnecessary issue that has pervaded US for at least a couple of years now. It is a ridiculous issue that should NOT exist and is regarding "Apple Mail Cut & Paste Problem..."

Thanks for listening

I too have opened a bug ticket with apple. They left the case open as they are working to resolve this issue in a furture release.

I've attempted the following fixes with out avail.

The issue occurs with other users accounts. Nevertheless I tried rebuilding my own account:

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57437548-263/how-to-rebuild-a-user-account- in-os-x/

I reinstalled OSX but kept my user account.

Reset the PRAM, NVRAM, and SMC (not sure how this would fix the probelm, but I will try anything at this point)

The only work around is to paste without formatting (paste into plain text document then into email) or to choose Edit > Paste and match style.

I've had this problem ever sisnce Lion. I've experienced the problem consistantly across Mail and Notes (really annoying) on my macbook pro and even with my iPad3. I thought doing a clean upgrade to mountian lion would do the trick, I even blew away my user profile, but like other users the issue still exists. Threads like this only work for issues that can be fixed by users. Since this behavior is clearly an OS bug, the best thing we can do to resolve this is not rely on the forum. Apple is clearly the only people who can fix the code. So go to your Apple retail store and open a ticket with the Genius bar. The more tickets Apple has about this issue the more they will be able to see the trend, track the issue, and resolve the problem with a patch.

Here's a link to make your reservation: http://concierge.apple.com/geniusbar/R229

Following opening tickets with Apple, the next best thing to do is help ourselves and gather as much information as possible. The more information we provide Apple the faster the root cause will be identified and resolved. So, people, please include the specs of your mac. This behavior may be localized to a specific model, but we won't know unless it's documented.

I just sent this bug report to Apple. Feel free to copy and paste -- at least on these blocks it pastes where you want it to! As Peter Oram1 said: I'm sure I'm not the first person to do this. But Apple staff don't necessarily read these forums. Submitting a bug report isn't very satisfying, but if we all do it, maybe they'll take notice?

Apple has yet to fix a seemingly basic function: being able to reliably cut & paste text in their flagship Mail program. I see complaints of this problem more than a year ago. We have had several system updates and moved to LION - and still you cannot cut a phrase and move it to paste in somewhere else in the text. Apple decides to send it ANYWHERE! doesn't make sense. I have been an Apple fan since 1984 and don't understand why it isn't getting fixed. We need Steve Jobs back.

I've also been following this for a long time and don't understand why Apple is not making good on its commitments to an "incredibly high standard" of Customer Experience (see links below).

Who is actually compensated on the quality of customer experience? How is it measured; against what requirement?

From Apple Careers - http://www.apple.com/jobs/ca/:

"Every detail matters.

Every piece of packaging. Every swipe of the finger. Every “How can I help you?” Everything. And it doesn’t matter just some of the time. It matters all of the time. That’s how we do things at Apple. The result is some of the best-loved products in the world.

Simplicity isn't simple.

Ask anyone here. It’s hard work. It means forever asking, “Why is it this way?” and “How can it be better?” It means rethinking every customer experience until the clutter has fallen away — until all that remains is what’s essential, useful, and beautiful. That might be a new product feature that delights even die-hard fans. It might be a customer support call, or even a display in an Apple store, arranged and lit exactly so."

From a letter by Tim Cook, (about MAPS) - http://www.apple.com/ca/letter-from-tim-cook-on-maps/

"To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. ...<more>... Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Apple’s CEO"

Well here I am again, puffing out my cheeks in exasperation with the longevity of this discussion. When I posted the original post way back in August 2011, I foolishly thought some keen brainbox at Cupertino would pick up this thread and deal with in his lunch break just to shut us up from moaning about it! Sadly two years on, still nothing! So I've just written another letter to Apple Feedback...

LISTEN UP APPLE...

This has gone on long enough!

There is a Discussion post on your forum that goes back to August 2011 about the inherint problems with signatures in Apple Mail. Primarily this involves cutting and pasting within email messages within a signature. Although this post is over two years old and with numerous incarnations of Mail, we are still experiencing random locations when pasting within signature areas. Not only that bizarre oddities like formatted text losing their styling after pasting.

The code behind Mail must be seriously screwed up to cause these issues. Don't think I'm alone here, this post has received to date 213 replies and over 30,000 viewings! This demands some attention NOW!

I really don't know what else we can try. I recently gave Postbox a go and whilst it handles signatures perfectly it has other shortcomings that Mail can do better. I think we should do as StevenDBS suggests and go to MacRumors and AppleInsider to see if we can get some attention to this via another route.

Maybe everyone who reads this text copies and pastes the italic text above and sends Apple a feedback post here... http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
