Apple Mail Cut & Paste Problem...

I have a problem with Apple Mail when I cut some text and paste it somewhere else within the message it doesn't go in where the cursor is located! Instead it pastes into what appears to be a random place elsewhere in the message usually at the start of the line or paragraph.

It's really strange and completely unfathomable. The only solution I've found is to put in a couple of returns paste it in to the message then move the cursor up and delete the newly added line breaks.

I thought it might be a font issue so I changed my default font from Arial to Trebuchet and it's still doing it. This doesn't appear to happen in any other application.

This is not exclusive to Snow Leopard as it does it on my Mac at home which is running Lion.

Any advice gratefully received.

Still, though haven't bothered trying that (probably as uncomfortable as copy-paste to pages and back anyway) and despite your afford (well noticed and appreciated) it's just a work-around from a User - but I wanna see some Pro action here. And an update like NOW. Really. BASIC and self-solving was eighties, I'm not into all that anymore. Anyhow, who's precious "private time" is valued more? The programmers or the customers/buyers? Same same, I expect more from a company selling supposingly prime products at a prime price range.

It annoys me, that all I read is next iPad bla here and future bla TV there. I'm in for work and you're constantly wasting my time Apple, you're all consumers now and apparently neglecting professionals or the ones, simply relying on their Mac as a working and computing environment. Think it's time you cut some benefits, order Pizza like in the old days and keep your staff in. And if not, don't come wining when all over sudden now one needs your fancy gadgets anymore and all you have left, well had, WAS us. I don't buy it.

Hi David,

I submitted a bug report via: http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html

Have not yet received a reply.

Might be helpful if more of us submitted reports, certainly couldn't hurt.

I briefly described the issue and referenced this tread.

As an FYI, pasting using Cmd-Opt-Shift-v (instead of the customary Cmd-v) bypasses the issue for me, but shouldn't be necessary. I'm sure it will be fixed at some point... hope it's soon.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences, and hang in there!

Wondering if anyone seeing a potential related situation when sending an email with a signature ....... it seems that any email I send with a signature is taking 2-3 times as long to send (sometimes longer). I'm not talking about BIG signatures either - just with a few sentences that may be formatted more than "normal" text and no pictures, etc.

I am fairly certain this is directly related to those with signatures versus just plain text.

Anyone experience this?

Also, WHERE is someone from Apple? Can't ANYONE from Apple chime in on this ...... even just to say "hi" and say that these posts are at least being observed?

Pages has an issue with cut/paste, too, as I discovered a few days ago while editing an address on a letter - think I saw a post about that around here somewhere. You might look for (or start) a thread regarding Notes. Such a basic operation, strange that there'd be similar issues across so many apps....?

As for delays with/without signatures, haven't noticed any difference. ATT DSL "stalls" just the same either way.

;-)

Easy enough to test tho, just send yourself a pair of emails, yes?

I've chimed in on this issue with mail's signatures several times now over the last month or two. Wondering if anyone has had, or noticed ANY addressing of this issue in ANY WAY, SHAPE, or FORM from Apple? I'm getting VERY dissatisfied with even trying anymore to use the features that the signature feature of Apple is SUPPOSED to have. It seems that it is a "non-feature" since we really aren't able to use it without it being time consuming and even questionable as to the result; or, whether the formatting will even work.

My bet will be that instead of fixing it, Apple will just eliminate it and focus on their "money makers" of the ipads, ipods, iphones, etc.

I think they have forgotten about the "mac users" out here that helped make them who they are today ...... you know, the "i-consumers".

Anyway, if anyone has heard any nuances from Apple toward this issue, would love to know. Maybe we need to hold a nationwide protest or "sit-in" at the California headquarters of Apple!!!!!

This is just a user forum, no reason to think anybody at Apple is gonna read this thread. Might as well ask Siri! ;-)

The workaround for now is to set Mail > Preferences > Signatures to "none" and then add your signature _after_ composing email by using popup signature menu in the email window. Works for me, seems to eliminate editing issues. Just have to remember to add the signature is all.....

Dec 10, 2011 10:07 AM in response to Motorcycle Michael

To the contrary (sort of) ....... this ONLY works if you do NOT edit the signature whatsoever. Even just putting your cursor in the area of the signature after you choose it from the pull down menu can "set off" the issue by cause the color wheel to spin (as if mail is not responding); and, MANY times when I go to send the email with the signature (just inserting from the pull-down menu, and NOT editing) it will cause mail to "not respond" for awhile, but eventually send the email.

And, actually, Apple DOES (supposedly) read these. I've called into AppleCare before and one of the first things they do is search this "database" and discuss some issue with me based on other's experiencing similar problems. It just seems VERY strangely quiet from Apple.

I can edit my signature here without a hang/error/problem, long as I do not try to cut/copy/paste anywhere. I haven't experienced the beachball hang, but I _have_ seen portions of edited text in a message vanish along with its signature when selecting "none" from signature popup (in an email with a signature).

I have two signatures, an old one and a newer version that isn't much different (nothing flashy, no color or logo), but I can choose either one. Granted, none of this should be a problem and we shouldn't need to have this discussion(!), but it does suggest the possibility of having multiple pre-designed signatures in that popup menu. You can name them anything you like, and as long as it's the last thing you do before hitting "send," it might be a viable workaround (albeit, one that may not suit you).

Best guess I have is that the problem has something to do with how things are stored in the clipboard. (If you cut or copy something in an email, then switch to the Finder > Edit menu > Show Clipboard, you'll see it there.) It may be that - somehow, for some reason - a 'return' is added to the cut/copy that forces a new line in an email when you then choose to paste. Or perhaps Mail is expecting some format/color/spec data that gets stripped in the clipboard. Since a similar problem occurs in other apps, it kinda suggests an issue beyond just the Mail.app.

As for a response from Apple....? A bug fix buried in some update (someday) is about the best we can hope for. This forum is a great resource for all, especially since - let's face it - we're all beta testers now. But I don't think Apple is in the habit of directly answering questions/issues here.

I was getting pretty fed up having not heard from Apple about our plight so I have used the "Provide Mail Feedback..." option in the Mail menu of Apple Mail and sent the following...

PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL...

Back in August I posted a discussion about cut and paste issues I was having in Apple Mail.

I was not alone with this as FOUR months on we now have 58 replies from other users experiencing these problems. This is clearly a widespread bug with the application and I think a little reassurance from Apple to say they aware of the issue and dealing with it wouldn't go amiss.

I have noticed problems with odd pasting locations and reformatting of other text after pasting since OSX 10.4 and we are three OS down the line and we are still suffering with the same problems.

I and all the other people who have contributed to the forum about this, will be very grateful to hear from you soon.

Let's hope for some response but if all those affected by this problem also directly send them a message maybe they might be provoked into a response.
