Arrange by "Date Added" lists recently added files with "No Date"

One of my favorite new features in Finder is the option to "Arrange by Date Added".

I have a folder with three items added today. As expected, when viewed in Finder they are listed at the top of the window (in column view) in the "Today" section.

When I want to add these items as a new "source" in Handbrake, the newly added items in this folder do not appear in the "Today" section. They appear in the "No Date" section instead.

The same thing happens when, after processing with Handbrake, I want to add the newly created media files to my iTunes library. They appear in the "No Date" section of the window rather than the "Today" section.

To recap: Files added to a folder today appear in the "Today" section when viewed in Finder. The same files appear in the "No Date" section when viewed through applications other than Finder.

Has anyone else seen this problem?

I have a solution that worked for me. While you are in your application, for me, let's say I'm looking at the finder through Indesign, trying to find my last modified file. you click the "Change item arrangement" icon and select "None." this lists the true last date modified files, instead of filing them under "No Date." "Change item arrangement" icon is shown below. hope this helps!

I think the problem is with (most) non-apple apps which use the file dialog.

From my experience they all work fine on the day you launch the application. If you leave the application running the next day it won't show newly added files at the top but they appear at the bottom under No Date

E.g. when I open the Chrome file dialog it shows me under Today files from the 6th of June (that's when I last launched Chrome. Today is the 27th. So it seems Chrome and a lot of other applications don't update the date for the file dialog.

On the bottom under No Date, the file dialog lists all the files that were added since the 6th of June (which Chrome still thinks is today).

I don't know the API but my guess is 3rd party applications are not setting the date correctly when opening the file dialog. IMHO this should be done automatically.

Update: I just checked some Apple applications and e.g. Numbers and Pages have the same problem while e.g. Preview doesn't.

Let's hope it will be fixed with Mavericks

Well I would think honestly it is in Apple hands as iBen mentioned some Apple apps have this issue too. Really doesn't make sense to not have the funcionality work after midnight. I have to restart or log off to get it to work. I also find this very annoying as it is a great feature. I only used if for a few apps and it doesn't work with any of them if after midnight or a new day since restarting.

I tried to report to bugreporter.apple.com/ but dosn't let me log in so I am going to try and get some assitance on why not from Apple support.

The answer to the question here solved the issue for me (at least on OS X 10.9.3):

http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/99365/mac-os-x-file-open-dialog-cant-so rt-or-resize-columns

That is, if you set the item arrangement mode to "None", you can sort the whole list by any column by clicking on that column's header, and you should no longer see some files grouped in a No Date section at the bottom. (You can also add columns such as "Date Added" or "Date Last Opened" if they are hidden, by right-clicking on any column's header.)

The main problem with this solution is that it does not work if you are using "Column View" mode; only "List View" mode provides sortable column headers. "List View" mode has its merits, but as a rule I generally prefer "Column View" mode as I find it easier to navigate folders and I get an instant preview of any file I click on. However, using "Column View" in application dialogs (at least in ML), I am limited to relying on "Arrange by" for sorting, or the default alphabetical listing when "None" is selected for "Arrange by".

This, of course, leads me back to the topic of this thread, whereby, like others have reported in this thread, unless I restart all my applications at midnight (save the Finder), "Arrange by: Date Added" is rendered useless until I do restart them.

APPLE, this glitch has plagued my workflow since you decided to force people to column view everything.

I've about had enough with working with your system if you cannot just fix a simple bug that is really driving me insane on an hourly basis. I'm constantly downloading and editing files and it wastes countless time out of my workflow. How can something so simple be so hard to get right?!?!?!?!?!

Why are they not listening to such a common and infuriating bug that most people must be experiencing because I have 3 macs from various generations and all of them do it!

Or better yet; change the arrangement selector to Date Created.

I think OS X is making the correct assumption; that the file has not been 'modified'. It has no record of 'Date Modified', but it does have a 'Date Created'.

I found this solution after trying a few of the arrangement settings because I didn't like the layout of 'none' - it left all files in one contiguous group with no separation between the dates - which is why we typically use 'Date modified'.

I also found that each application; (Chrome, Safari, Mail) will keep it's own settings for the File Finder window. Changing the arrange setting while attaching a file in Chrome doesn't affect Finder and vice versa.

Happy now : ) I can find the most recent files quickly when I download / create them and want to upload them immediately to a web app or email.

Cheers.

Peter.
