One additional note. If you enjoy your sanity, DON'T run Apple Software Update after doing the complete uninstall-and-reinstall that Khalid suggests -- or, at least, think twice about installing Safari after doing the cleanup.

It's either the QuickTime 7.7 update or the Safari 5.1 install that breaks iTunes 10.4. And once iTunes is broken, you're back to the start. You have to completely roll back all of your iTunes bits and pieces and start from scratch again.

If I were to guess, I would point at Safari -- it must install WebKit pieces that interfere with iTunes, and that don't uninstall when you remove Safari. Due to time constraints, I haven't tried completely removing iTunes and installing only the QuickTime upgrade. More details when I get that far...

The suspect program is a recent build of Apple Application Support. Both the QuickTime 7.7 and Safari 5.1 updates include the updated build so installing either of these, as prompted by Apple Software Update, might have caused the problem on both of your computers. Of course there may well be more to it. I only had a problem with the Purchased histroy page, not the whole store, but uninstalling everything Apple and then just installing iTunes 10.4.0.80 has been a solid fix.

I was about to report back that it had to be the act of running Software Update. I installed both QuickTime and Safari, just QuickTime, and just Safari through Software Update, and all three broke iTunes (both the App Store and the Purchased page).

Do we know if it's safe to download the full QT 7.7 or Safari 5.1 installers, or should we just sit tight for a while? 🙂

I did download the latest itunes when it was released, but the App Store was okay until last night so it worked fine for well over a week.

On my laptop I still have QT 7.6 and that too has a blank App store.

I haven't yet seen anyone on the Mac side of these forums say that the App store is blank so could it be some windows update that took place in the last few days that is actually causing the problem?

It's unlikely -- I was able to restore the App Store and Purchased history pages by removing all Apple software and then reinstalling iTunes.

And I think tt2 is onto the real issue -- iTunes 10.4 installed Apple Application Support version 1.5.2, while both updates through Apple Software Update (QuickTime 7.7 and Safari 1.5) installed version 2.0.1 of that software.

I think we can safely say that Apple Application Support 2.0.1 is breaking iTunes 10.4.

As to why it doesn't happen on Macs -- do Macs use (or need) the Apple Application Support package?

Thaks you sir. This is the only solution that has worked to restore iTunes store.

It confirms that Apple has a problem in their upgrade scripts that has still not been addressed. Let's hope threads like this one encourage them to spend their significant profit dollars on a solution. It is only cutting their throat anyway - so they should be motivated.

A small bit of good news.

The combined iTunes 10.4.1 + Quicktime 7.7 upgrade doesn't update Apple Application Support, so it's safe (I did it a few minutes ago, and can confirm this).

There are threads here that mention the possibility of uninstalling Application Support 2.0.1 and reinstalling Application Support 1.5.2 -- but other threads indicate that this can fracture iTunes badly. I'm not up for installing Safari and then downgrading Application Support. Yet.

We'll see what happens as we get closer to iTunes 10.5 -- reports are that the most recent beta works properly with the Application Support 2.0.1.

Thanks and all for the post regarding a solution to the problem. I just wanted to say that I am surprised how many people just seem to accept that it's okay to have to uninstall everything and then install an update. That would be an hour or two's work - and sometimes leads to problems accessing your own music/apps etc. I would expect/hope for an official comment from Apple and "the line of easiest fix" - i.e. the least work/risk for me for a good result. I will try what Dru419 suggests above as it sounds much easier - and why the heck should I spend an hour and half of my time fixing an Apple problem - if I can't bill for it.

I hope I've not violated any T&Cs by being somewhat negative here - I presume it's REASONABLY free speech friendly...

All sounds reasonable to me. Of course now there is a new build out installing that is the easiest fix. Apple however tend not to publicly acknowledge problems or give any idea how long it might take for their fix to come out, so a workaround was the only solution for those who didn't want to wait.

As it goes I can't recall which order I did things in but I've upgraded to the latest builds of everything via Apple Software Updater, in particular iTunes 10.4.1.10 and Safari 5.1 are installed. Apple Application Support is at 2.0.1, the iTunes store is behaving as it should, and the paste-as-blank-artwork issue has been fixed. All good, until we work out what else got broken in the meantime. 😉
