Final cut pro x doesn't load projects on external hard drive

I have installed Final Cut Pro x. I save all of my projects on my external hard drive, and suddenly it has stopped working.

I load FCP and it displays, in the project library all of my projects on my external hard drive, and then dissappears! 😕

I have lots of projects and am really annoyed that I can't use them any more. I would really appreciate all of your help 🙂

It starts loading, and displays this

My external hard drive is called Ralph docs. It is still loading the window.

Then the external hard drive disappears from the project library...

Then it disappears from the event library. 😠

I tried going into the external hard drive directly and opening the project from there... Nothing happens. I can play it if I do that, but not edit it in the magnetic timeline.

😢

Please help me! I have even reinstalled FCP twice but nothing.

FCP X does seem to have a problem when too many Events and media is in the Library. I reccommend one of three things.

First, you can get "Event Manager X" to take some of them "offline" temporarily when you're not using them.

Or you can cretae Disk Images to put stuff in for specific clients or whatever, and only mount the .dmg when you need access to those Events and Projects.

Finally, I recommend you create folders in the Project Library, and start putting projects in them, and closing them. That way, the Project Library won't try loading data from all the projects at once. If it's not in a folder, or if the folder is open, FCP X will load up all the data for all the Projects it can see and can be overwhelmed pretty easily.

It appears that you are using FCP X 10.0.8.

Projects must be in a folder called exactly 'Final Cut Projects', and likewise events in 'Final Cut Events'.

You similarly named folders but with a '#' sign at the start. These will not be read by FCP X.

Hi guys I need some help with FCP X reading my external hard drive as well!

I am running FCP X 10.0.3

I have a 1TB external harddrive formatted as follows:

I believe this is formatted correctly in MS-DOS and I can read and write.

I only have two folders on the drive. One labeled #southeast asia and the other #time lapses. The only types of files on my harddrive are go pro files. JPGs for the pictures and MP4s for the videos. Nothing else. I have attached a screenshot of this as well:

I have gone through the whole forum and tried everything...my harddrive still does not show up in the event or project library.

Does anyone have any suggestions?!

Absolutely not. With that version of FCP the drives must be formatted Mac OS Extended. They cannot be formatted for DOS.

Tom -

So i only have about 90G of data on the hardrive.

Could I transfer that to another computer. Reformat my external harddrive to Mac OS Extended. And then re-load back on my 90G of pictures/videos onto the newly reformmated drive?

Should FCP read that then?

TThat's the first step. I can't tell from the folder structure you've shown. That's critical to the application seeing the projects and events. They have to be correctly located in Final Cut Projects and Final Cut Events folders.

How are the folders supposed to be structured? Right now my harddrive is called "Go Pro". Once you open it, it has two folders in it "#Southeast Asia" and "Time Lapses". Within each folder are a bunch of .jpgs and .MP4s.

I want to be able to 1) grab my videos/files from my external HD to use within FCP and 2) save all my FCP projects and events in my external HD.

Can you please show me how to label my folders and then I will re-format my hard drive into Mac OS Extended.

IIf you haven't imported the media yet there is no problem. FCP will create the folder structure when you import. Reformat the drive.

WHat OS are you using? This is a very old version of FCP.
