IWeb 3.0.4 - Including Audio with Autoplay - Caching issue

Hi,

I am new to IWeb and recently created a site using the latest version: 3.0.4 (601). I have included audio files in the site with the Autoplay option enabled (using the Site Inspector tool; check Autoplay). The first time I load the published site using Firefox 6, the audio indeed autoplays (great!!), however if I refresh the page or even reload it, the audio does not play. Even if I quit firefox and reopen, then reload the page, no audio...??? Only if I clear the cache in Firefox and quit Firefox, then reopen and reload page does the audio autoplay again.

I would prefer that every time the page is loaded (or refreshed) that the audio plays, is there something I can do in IWeb (or I suppose in the JS that it creates) to enable this type of behavior.

In Safari (5.1), when I load this same page, the audio NEVER plays. No matter if I clear cache, reload, nothing...????

Any and all suggestions and help is much appreciated!!

Thanks!
Mike

I'm using V 5.1 and its not working well for me at all. It screws up some website layouts - including this forum - jumps, flashes and distorts the html 5 control bar....

Old Toad has been helping me troubleshoot it but I appear to have the same settings as him but different behavior.

Normally I would just revert to 5.0.5 as it just seems to be me that's having the problems. I'm using Safari less and less nowadays. You can see why when you look at the browser stats. IE and Safari are heading for extinction while Firefox is stable and Chrome is the next big thing.

Most PC users that I know are switching to Chrome as the Windows version is really slick and fast - quite different from the Mac version.

There's not much point in testing your sites in Safari when so few surfers use it. It tends to delude us into thinking that our all our website content can be viewed by others!

Don't get me wrong - I like QuickTime but the fact of the matter is that when a visitor comes to a web page they should be able to click and play the media file. We can't expect them to jump through hoops to download/load plugins.

There are lots of ways to play media that can utilize both flash and html5....

... without resorting to Vimeo - or even worse - Youtube.

These players are not so difficult to implement and you can even incorporate them in a slideshow if you want. See slide 6...

Yes, i am running OS10.6.8, Safari 5.1 with Quicktime Plug-in 7.6.6 and it does not paly for me at all...

However wifeys IMac is running OS10.6.7, Safari 5.0.5 and the same Quicktime Plug-in 7.6.6 and it works as expected (everytime the page loads...).

Interestingly, testing on IE7 with Quicktime plug-in 7.7 (on VMWare partition).... works like a charm...???

Bizarroworld...;)

Thank you everybody for your help!!!

Nope, no extensions installed at all...

...and it gets better; I logged out of my primary user account and into another that I had set up on this same machine and it works fine... same OS, Safari and QT Plug-in, just different user...?????

Are there user specific settings / configurations that might be causing this behavior?

Becoming an academic exercise at this point...;)

Thanks again!!

It could be a preference file in your home accunt that is causing the problem. Here's one way to determine if that's the case:

Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard/Snow Leopard

1 - close all applications.

2 - open your Library folder, Home/Library, and drag the Preferences folder to the Desktop. A new Preference folder will be immediately created in the Library.

NOTE: if dragging the Preference folder to the desktop only copies it then after the copy has been made go back and drag the folder to the Trash in the dock. You will be asked to enter your Admin password. Then reboot and try again.

3 - run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.

4 - If the problem is fixed:

A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).

B - Open the Preferences folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.

C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button.

5 - If the problem is NOT fixed, drag the Preferencess folder on the Desktop into the Library folder to replace the new one that was created.
