Am using 10.6.8. iPhoto IS recognising it, but I prefer ImageCapture, and also I need to download some videos. (iPhoto reduces these to a single image.) So if anyone can help me, I'd be very grateful.

changing USB ports totally worked for me. took hours to get here though! Thanks Steve
The original post was old, but the problem seems to persist so I wanted to give my experience. Following various posts, the last thing I did was to work on the cable. I believe my connector is not an Apple brand. So while the small end goes into the phone just fine in either "direction", when it goes in one way the phone is not visible. When I flipped it over - voila. So I have a mark on my connector now so as to take out the guesswork. Hope this works for someone else.
I tried everything mentioned but nothing worked. So I restarted my computer and that did the trick!
