I've had a LaCie external burner for years - have you actually inserted a CD or DVD into it? You will not see an icon on your desktop until you insert media - then you should see a CD icon and/or a dialog "what do you want to do with this" type thing.

There is no driver needed as far as I know - I don't use one. I hook it up, open my Toast (or whatever I'm using), insert a DVD, and it shows up.

And an additional thought:

Although I am able to burn at a faster speed, the general recommendation is to burn at slower speeds to avoid write errors. The point is: so it takes 3 minutes longer, but you have a playable DVD that doesn't skip or come with other errors. So, when I am presented with a dialog in Toast to set my speed, I choose 2x if available. Some software apps actually will choose the best speed for you.

So, now we've gone from not recognizing the burner to a concern that it burns too slow - if you are not happy with it, simply return it.

I guess I was not clear in my first post. Sorry. The DVD burner shows no vendor support. It shows generic burner support. Lightscribe cannot find my Burner, Therefore I have to assume the Imac does not recognize it. I have loaded all the software that came with it.My Imac is new and has the Lion OS. I don't think LaCie has updated for Lion.

I;m sorry. The shout was unintentional. I hit the caps lock by mistake and did not notice it til I got your post.. I do appreciate your help, I am saying Lion is not seeing the unit properly because the Lacie software I loaded is not compatible with Lion, The Writer shows as not vendor supported. It shows generic burn support. Lightscribe cannot find a lightscribe writer when I tell it to write the label.

I am going to review my posts a little better before I submit them. Please accept my apology.

I need to preface that I do not use Lightscribe because not all DVD players will work with labeled media, so I choose not to use it and therefore can't help with that aspect. I think you need to focus first on its' primary purpose: burning with it.

I did have an instance (I think it was either 10.4 or 10.5) where the Mac wouldn't recognize the burner either and I installed this:

I know it says that it's not needed and I had my go-around with LaCie at the time - but I installed it and it worked. They couldn't argue with that. The problem is that your sig says you're on 10.7, so proceed with caution: install it, restart, try it - if you get any kind of wonky behavior, remember where it is and delete it.

And I took a look at the Lightscribe downloads - they are all old! A lot of things that were still working with Snow Leopard no longer work with Lion, so that might be the case here - especially since they haven't been updated.

So, what I'd do right now is delete whatever burner software you installed, restart. Then download and install the above. This is the Read me on the (slightly earlier) version of this file that I installed:
